I USE THIS FOR:
1) Generally shorter trips. I know every ounce counts, in theory... but that's at around the 4-5+ day mark. I need to give a stove to someone else. I can carry a couple of extra ounces for a couple of days
2) I let other people us it, especially those new to backpacking, and we were all new to backpacking at one point. It's spot-on simple, wont break or blow up.
3) I use it when I need a simpler solution and one that doesn't really look obviously like a camping stove. Like an outdoor unheated shelter or in a hotel room to boil water for tea or coffee. It's just handy to have around.
4) It's excellent for car camping, as an extra burner to boil water for whatever.
There was a previous version that had a heat exchanger attached to the bottom. That bottom was nice, but always got caught on the bag, and to me, was a bit of a pain. This is nice and smooth and there is a bevel on the bottom to fit in the burner cage.
I DO NOT USE THIS FOR:
1) Extended trips where ounces DO matter. This is not my preferred solution. On true distance hikes, I use a Trangia burner, Liberty Mountain triangle holder and a windscreeen with a GSI Soloist or Dualist, depending on how many people are going. There are lighter solutions, but this is the right weight/durability solution for me.
2) Some gear you are betting your life on. As a cooking solution where it HAS to work, no matter what, it's the Trangia 27 (smaller size). True story - was camping the night of Snowmagedden outside of DC. That was BS snow and wind, and the Trangia was happily boiling ramen noodles, completely exposed to the elements. That built up a lot of trust. Pretty heavy, but if you are betting your life on it working, the 27 is The One...
Anyhoo, this esbit is a great piece of kit. I doubt you will be disappointed.
When I first open the box of a new purchase, my eyes go immediately to the construction of what's inside. This stove and pot set met and surpassed my expectations of quality in regards to the seams and rivets as well as the strength of the anodized metal. The weight is great for its size, albeit there are many lighter stoves out there but not for cooking for 2. I like this set better than the 3 piece set because of the extra pot/lid that comes with, which makes for a great bowl to eat from. The diameter of this stove is larger than my titanium cup that fits over 2 other stoves I own, but it still fits inside of this pot. So, I can have a pot, large coffee cup, and frypay/lid all in one, plus the alcohol stove and fuel cube stand.
Overall I'm very happy with hit. The alcohol stove burns very evenly and I was boiling water at 1500' altitude in 8 minutes (true rolling boil). I haven't tried it with the fuel cubes yet, as I'm not ready to scorch the outside while it's so new. I also recommend purchasing a small foldable stove windscreen designed for stoves this size. Amazon has a couple that are decent and under $10. The windscreen really helps on those balmy days where you just can't catch a break from the wind but really need to get cooking.
Pack weight is great. Can't say I could tell you what the whole kit weights outside of the packaging, but it's lighter than my Jetboil and is more fuel versatile. This stove is going in my bug-out bag with fuel cubes stored in it. I live in the desert, and having propane tanks in my bug-out bag for my Jetboil prevented me from carrying my bug-out bag everywhere I went. I don't want propane in my truck when outside temps are over 110 degrees. This eliminates liquid fuels and I can now leave my bug-out bag in my truck again on hot sunny days.
Next on the collection list is a good wood burning stove so I won't need to carry any fuels at all. Until then, I plan to make good use of this 5 piece set.
The pot and pan/lid are nicely made, and plenty large for a meal for one person. The handles are comfortable and everything nests well, although I put the stove and fuel platform in a freezer bag so the pot wouldn't pick up residue, and I also keep my fuel tablets in the bag with them - I have 16 in there right now for an upcoming 8-day trip.
Even with all that fuel, the stuff only comes up just short of the top of the pot, so in the extra space in the pan I have a small travel shampoo bottle filled with Campsuds, an MSR Alpine scraper brush thing, a couple small measuring spoons, some foil, a slightly cut-down GSI plastic spatula, a box of Diamond pine matches, and a polyester washcloth I use as my dish drying rag which I squish in at the end to keep everything from rattling. That's a lot of crap I don't have to keep in a separate stuff sack!
A word of advice: if you intend to use solid fuel often, put a little bit of aluminum foil on the fuel platform, and burn the fuel on that. The tablets leave just a little bit of sticky black residue behind which will eventually form a dome and make it difficult to center the tablets, and sanding it off isn't good for the platform's longevity.
