As a teacher I like to move around the room while I screen media for my students, so for me this is a killer tool. I, sure it’s got other uses too, but I’m popping this review up here in case you wondering if this might work in your classroom too.
The remote is also small, lightweight, and easy to hold. However, the buttons have a cheap, low-quality feel to them and I am uncertain as to whether some of the buttons will fail prematurely. Also, the bottom of the remote is curved to accommodate holding in your hand. Hence, it tends to rock when using the remote on any flat surface. Not a big deal, but it can be annoying.
Also, if the remote has been inactive for a period of time, you may need to wake it up with a key press first before it will recognize any control input (push pause twice to pause, etc.).
Pros:
- One of the best remotes available for IOS devices (including AppleTV and Macs)
- Comfortable to hold
- Tactile buttons can be felt and recognized when remote is in your pocket
- Bluetooth connectivity works at the stated distance
- Siri activation works well (if the phone or other paired device is close enough to hear you)
- Pair once and done
- Customer service and support is excellent
Cons:
- Buttons feel a little on the cheap side, not very durable over time
- No built in microphone for Siri (relies on the microphone on the paired device)
- Battery compartment is very difficult to open
- Requires a button battery
- Button battery is not the same battery used in Apple remotes
- Cost
I was able to pair the remote with my iPhone with ease - the "connect" button causes it to appear immediately in the iPhone's Bluetooth menu and selecting "pair" brings up a dialog on the iPhone to enter a four digit code on the remote. After entering the code via the remote's keyboard - Connect! Easy as pie.
Now for the real test. I also purchased a magnetic waterproof pouch (made for a small cell phone) that is made to attach to the gas tank on the motorcycle. I cut foam to fit the remote snugly into the pouch and went for a ride. The remote worked perfectly even with gloves and through the clear plastic cover of the waterproof pouch. Very nice! There is no delay in the volume control or the forward/reverse and the buttons are just big enough to easily control the iPhone.
Later, I paired the remote with my iMac and it worked well with a selection of movies as well. A very handy device.
Some observations:
With the device paired to my iPhone and turned on (yes, there is an on/off switch on the left side of the remote) I noticed that the iPhone virtual keyboard would not come up when trying to reply to a text. At first I thought ok, I can deal with that - it reminds me to turn it off when not using it. Then I discovered one of the nice features of the remote - it has a keyboard symbol on one of the buttons! When you press that button, the virtual keyboard pops up instantly on the iPhone - nice!
Once paired with a device, to use it with another device - in this case, my iMac, you lose the pairing with the first device (my iPhone) and have to re-pair to use it again with the other device (does not seem to pair to multiple devices). This is probably by design due to the fact that it is a media control device and pairing with multiple devices at the same time would be confusing at best. I like the device so much, I will buy a second one for the iMac - problem solved.
All in all, it is a nice device that works as advertised. Unlike the Apple remote which has an elegant design but poor tactile feedback and smallish buttons, this remote is very usable. I give it five stars so far after a week of use in various conditions.

Ben fatto!
