Bad design. It may leak first use or later!

Bad design. It may leak first use or later!
I see why there are bad reviews for leaking and problems dispensing water. This is because of poor design, engineering. Granted, the cost outlay is not great but multiplied by items sold it is a lot in aggregate. Amazon should pull these until the company resolves this issue; engineering types will keep posting to warn people not to spend their money, even though the idea is good. Here’s the problem. The ball dispenser is meant to be closed when the bottle is seated in the tray and open when the bottle is upright. There is a slotted key in the tray to hold the ball in place while the bottle rotates around the ball. The “axle” on the ball has a D-shaped end which is designed to fit into the slotted key cap, which essentially snaps in place and has an o-ring to prevent leakage. In the design, the key cap/axle end is the weak point. See pic, yellow distortion of plastic at the corners, cap receptacle. Why? Unaccounted for torque caused by bottle rotation. This torque is directly related to how tight a customer closes the bottle. The gasket between bottle and ball changes the “feel” of tightness by the customer and them wanting to make sure it doesn’t leak. If one barely seats the bottle to the gasket there may not be an issue. However, not even really over tightening, it puts puts enough tension on the ball that the resulting rotational torque will spin the axle in the slotted cap; the cap itself can not rotate. Once that happens it deforms the cap’s axle receptacle plastic and it will no longer keep the ball in designed position. Ultimately it leaks when supposed to closed and will not dispense when supposed to be open. Other times it is between open/closed in either position. If yours is leaking, this may be why!

These bottles are the best things ever. I keep one in the car for my thirsty pooches and another in my bag for them on long walks. The bottles are easy to fill, don’t leak, easy to offer to the dogs, easy to control the flow of clean water, easy for the dogs to use, easy to empty, and easy to close when done. Brilliant idea.

I just ordered 3 more to save on shipping. We have had several of these over the years and all have had the same problem, they eventually crack between the hinges of the trough. Never had one leak when closed though, and our dog loves drinking out of it. She is an active boxer dog and this breed tends to overheat anytime the temp gets much above 60 degrees so this product works well for her. Boxers also have very wide tongues and she seems to have no problem lapping up the water. If they can figure out how to keep these from cracking, I would give it 5 stars, but for under $10 we just figure it will only last a year or so and worth buying despite that issue. Should mention that once they crack it's not just water dripping through the trough (when opened up) that's the problem, the hinges flex and will start to pop out of place and it eventually becomes useless. One thing is to make sure of when watering your dog is to keep the trough part resting on the ground, this will put less stress on the hinges and prolong the life of the product.

I take my dog out for trail runs with me and bought this bottle to keep her hydrated. It is so much easier than carrying a collapsible bowl in my camelback and having to pull it out, fill it out, trying to collapse it back down, blah blah blah. Using the bowl & camelback is fine for long runs with no pace goal, but for shorter, faster runs or group runs, this bottle is so much easier. The flip down lid creates a "bowl" for her to drink from and the design keeps the slobbery water from backwashing into the bottle so if I want a drink all I have to do is unscrew the top. Since you flip the bottle upside to use it, I never have any trouble squeezing water out enough if the volume gets low. The only drawback is I can't clip the bottle to my clothes since my run shorts are thin material and the bottle is fairly heavy when full. I wind up carrying the bottle in my hands which I don't really care for but that's just a personal preference. I just don't like holding things in my hand when I'm running but I would have this issue with any dog water bottle, not just this one.

I bought this bottle to replace the separate water bottle + bowl I used to have to take on walks for my dog, so for that reason it's a good 2-in-1 solution. It's lightweight as well, so not overly heavy to carry around. So far it functions well - The water squirts out easily into the bowl/tray and my cocker spaniel finds it easy to drink out of.

My only issues are:
1) You have to bend over and hold it while the dog drinks - you can't rest it on the ground, which is a little inconvenient. If your dog only takes a couple of licks it's fine, but if your dog is a long drinker like mine, this can be a pain.
2) You also have to hold / angle it right so the water stays levels and doesn't tip out of the tray.
3) Because of the way the bowl folds over the bottle, you also can't stand it up on the counter etc. It can only lie on its side.
4) The tray lid doesn't screw on like an ordinary bottle, it kind of gets to a tight point and then becomes loose again as you keep turning it around. So you have to make sure you turn it to the tight notch otherwise it does leak, and has leaked a couple of times in my bag.

I like this water bottle for my dog. He is able to easily drink from it while we are out and about. The bottle dispenses just as much water as you want based on how hard you squeeze. This way you don't waste much/any water and need to try and pour it back into your container. He basically drinks exactly how much he wants.

The one thing to watch out for is the brittleness of the dispenser. If you drop the bottle on a hard surface you will most like end up with a broken dispenser. Many others have written about this.

Be careful and this is a great solution.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fragile and brittle
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 4, 2019

I purchased this water bottle early last year. It didn't leak and had a better way of dispensing water than the popular cheaper dog water dispensers. However, the plastic of the part where the dog drinks from is very brittle. I used the belt hook, walked into a pub and knocked the dispenser on a stool. It fell off my belt and dropped onto the timber floor and cracked. It's now utterly useless and I even tried glueing it but failed. I appreciate it was my fault, but the plastic shouldn't break from a 3ft high drop.
