Much better than I expected considering all the negative reviews

Much better than I expected considering all the negative reviews
This if a review of the BV9384NVI researched many head units and had narrowed my search to either the Sony XAV-AX200 or JVX KV-V840BT.I wanted to use Android Auto for navigation, have a DVD/CD slot, and decode FLAC files from USB thumb drive, and have a unit that was true Double DIN to fit the aperture in my 1996 Ford Explorer. In the end, after reading of implementation difficulties with Android Auto, I decided I did not want to spend $300+ to be a Beta Tester. The Boss units with FLAC capability and built-in GPS/Navigation plus SD and USB reader and Aux port offered a feature set only matched in $500+ units form the majors (JVC, Sony, Pioneer, Kenwood).Amazon had a customer returned unit on sale for $96 so I took an inexpensive gamble.I installed it a month ago and have used it for about 15 hours. My Observations:GPS Nav works great - I placed the antenna on a metal mending plate on the underside of my dash - invisible. Signal strength is excellent (9-10 Sats minimum). Female nav voice is clear. Maps (from NDrive) are stored on a removable 8GB SD (included) which can be placed in your PC for SW updates or expanded map purchases (Beyond US) or different voices.Audio - the unit is musical and will play quite loudly and crisply. There is audible hiss at the lowest volumes settings (up to 2 or 3). The hiss is present only when a source is selected, otherwise it is silent. I thought this would bother me - as I consider myself an audiophile (20K home system) - but I do not notice it at all when driving.Volume control knob is awesome - good feel with detents and can adjust the volume slowly.Past 75% the unit plays louder than I can bear.BT Connectivity - Instantaneous with my LG V20 and stable. No issues. It pairs as soon as I start the car - no user intervention.BT Voice calls - the built-in microphone works well and I was happy I did not have to run an extra external mic and cable. Friends report good clarity overall and their voice through the car speakers is superb. Some friends have said sometimes it sounds like I'm in a tunnel.DVD Player - I watched part of one movie. It was fine. Screen was sharp and colors were good. The safety interlock is trivial to bypass. Its a simple ground connection unlike some units (e.g. Pioneer which require a sequence of ground connections to enable the DVD player.CD Player - worked perfectly.Safety Notifications - Nothing - No annoying safety screen or keys to depress each time you start the car. It just loads the song you were listening to at the conclusion of your last trip and starts playing, or the radio station, etc.AUX Input - its on the front panel. Have not tried it.Camera Input - in back of unit - have not tried it.Streaming - have not tried it since all my music is in FLAC files on USB and SD.FLAC on USB and SD - works perfectly - crisp beautiful sound.Only issue is I have 2000 FLAC files (songs) on my Sandisk USB and Samsung SD card and the Boss just gives me a long list rather than grouped by directory tree. I'm sure there is a way around this but it does not bother me much to scroll through the list.Touch screen - normally responsive but sometimes I have to go back and try again because it misreads a key press in the sub menu settings. A touch pen is included and it prefers this. One nice attribute is each default source volume can be changed individually - so that the Radio Tuner, CD, Flac USB/SD, DVD, Navigation etc, all have the same volume setting. So switching sources keeps same volume.Radio tuner works fine - good sensitivity. I live in the PNW in a remote area and can access many radio stations that my original OEM Ford Tuner could not detect.Installation was quick (2 hrs). I had to dremel 0.2 and 0.1 inches of material from the upper and lower interior edge of the bezel to accept the unit but it did not take long and the external visible fit is perfect. I used the plastic FMK552 installation kit to hold the unit against the inside bezel (replacing the OEM clips). I used the Metra 70-5600 kit to match the Ford harness. On the Ford with premium sound the blue wire on the long connector powers the car amp and must be tied to the PControl wire from the Boss.I do not know yet if the unit will be reliable but thus far no issues and very pleased with the purchase and the cost savings.

With some of the reviews on this system ranging from ok to poor, I figured I should offer my own. Keep in mind that this, as any aftermarket system, is exactly that, aftermarket. With a price point under $200 you can't beat it. Price out an OEM replacement and you'll understand. I installed this system myself as I am quite familiar with electronics and this was not my first install by any means. I also purchased a PAC Audio SWC interface because I wanted to retain my steering wheel buttons control. You MUST follow the wiring scheme precisely. For the most part, most of the wire color codes (specifically for the speakers) were identical, however, there are a few that are NOT. Sometimes the description differs. If you're unsure or don't know, call support. Note: this system has the 3.5mm jack specifically for the SWC controller. Some of the old manuals you may download don't show this, they just indicate Key A, Key B and ground. I was pleased to find the 3.5mm jack which makes it a no-brainer. Although the system allows for reprogramming of the buttons, I chose to use the default settings and it was 100% plug and play!

I also purchased the Metra 95-6511 for use in my Jeep. This installation was flawless and it looks great! Keep in mind you should check the fit in the dash panel while it's out. I had to move the system as far reward as it would go to get the perfect fit.

Love it. Really modernized my old truck.
The rear camera was easy to install by using the INCLUDED hole saw. Wow! But the center drill bit in the hole saw wasn't the best, so I drilled a pilot hole with a good drill bit of about the same size. Then I used their hole saw and mounted the camera right beside the license plate.
I did have to buy an extra video cable due to the length of the truck and the way I routed the wire. (about $7 on Amazon). I had some questions about the camera wiring, and the tech support responded within an hour. I bugged them 3-4 times and they responded quickly.
I had wanted a rearview camera and decided this model would give me that AND navigation for a really reasonable price. I did order the suggested Metra mounting bracket, the antenna adapter AND a wiring harness. Even the colors matched. I soldered the Boss plug wires to the adapter plug and it all worked the first time. Navigation seemed slow, until I realized it was finding a route to somewhere back east as the default "home" . Once I entered my real home address, it found it very quickly.
Hard to find all the different setup screens to change/personalize the screen, but once you do, it is easy. Well worth the approximately $175 it cost me for the radio and the other items.
      ***Update***
After I got it all installed, I found that the CD player would not accept the disk. I contacted the VERY helpful BOSS support, and they told me I had apparently gotten a lemon and suggested I return it to Amazon as it would be much faster for me. I have never used Amazon't "replacement" option for a defective product before, but it worked smoothly and I received the replacement 2 days later.
I removed the radio unit from the replacement box and replaced it with the defective one to send back with all the rest of the parts (wiring, camera, etc.). I installed the replacement head unit and it works flawlessly. So a word of advice, before you put your dash completely back together, test all the features of the unit...not just the radio and camera like I did.

finally got it installed. Some people say it looks dated. But compared to my stock CD player it is quite an improvement. Having a touch screen in a 1990s Chevy Blazer. Sounds as good as my original head unit because I'm using my aftermarket amps and speakers my original radio was failing in the stock one in the CD player was starting to give up. It was time to get a new one. And I wanted to upgrade to a touch screen. I'm quite happy with it. I think it's a little on the expensive side compared to what you can find on eBay but those are no names and that kind of scares me. Oh and I was wondering about this. If it had the illumination wire that goes to the headlight switch. And it does. You turn your headlights on and the unit dims for night time driving. In case anybody was interested. I was and I could not find the answer.
And I've been unable to hook up the rear trigger for the camera. It seems my reverse light switch is down on the transmission. Have to consider what to do about that. I have a camera hooked up with the wireless transmitter. And that does work. But without the trigger wire hooked up it does not turn on.
got a chance to use the navigation system today. Works very well. Much better than my cell phone and better than my old TomTom. Thought maybe I had a problem playing wav and wma music through an SD card. Playes thewav and wma on a CD fine. So I tried a new 32gig SD card. Because I have wav and mp3 music on my computer from downloading from my albums. And this one work just fine. Very happy!
Hooked up triggering wire to b/u bulb. Works very well. My wireless transmitter is not good, seems like interfere. When there is .no interfere it has a great picture. Impressed. Recomend it for a very good head unit!
It up to five stars. It really does work very well. Especially with my separate amplifiers and aftermarket speakers. the touchscreen does take a little getting used to. Sometimes it's very sensitive. GPS works perfectly. Plays my SD cards perfectly. Wrong with my CDs. GPS works perfectly. Plays my SD cards perfectly. Also please my CDs pretty much any format I have tried. WMA, Wav, Flac, Mp3..
Update, been a few weeks now. still very happy with this unit. there are quite a few little adjustments you can do for brightness and sound etc.etc. if you notice the last picture. It is of the volume knob. There is a lighted ring behind it. But the knob is too big to see the ring around the knob. What a shame. that is probably the most negative thing I have found so far. Oh and you disconnect the battery everything has to be reset. which is probably fairly normal. But there are a lot of settings that I like to change for my preference
I hope Daniel one of the reviews. Said radio is to loud. There are master volume adjustments. The radio is loud but not crazy like he said. Try that adjustment. There u can all output volume.

My problem is the map software was over 2 years old when i bought the stereo. Did not know at the time. I still contacted Boss within the warranty. It is a SD card. There solution was take out the whole stereo and sand it back! Would take weeks. Other solution was buy another one and exchange the sd card. I would have to pay$300. not sure why it was so much. ,Paid $160 for mine. I just wanted a up to date map! It would be to easy to just a sd card, OMG!! Other than that it works well. But maps are old. Tyed to bye one form the map company Ndrve. $50. Also had to a EU paypal account or Visa. Did not know that you had to have a EU Visa or EU paypal. got fed up. My phone Google map works better anyway. A little pissed. I moved to a new city and wanted a good dash map navigator. oh well.

I moved to a new city and wanted a good dash map navigator. oh well.

Great product at a very reasonable price. Great customer support from BOSS. I messaged them that I was from Canada and needed to find out how to get the Canadian maps. They are sending me an SD card in the mail with the maps on it, no charge. Awesome customer service.
