4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 938 ratings

Endgames is the stunning final volume in L. E. Modesitt, Jr's, New York Times bestselling epic fantasy series the Imager Portfolio, and the fourth book in the story arc that began with Madness in Solidar through Treachery's Tools and Assassin's Price.

Solidar is in chaos.

Charyn, the young and untested ruler of Solidar, has survived assassination, and he struggles to gain control of a realm in the grip of social upheaval, war, and rioting. Solidar cannot be allowed to slide into social and political turmoil that will leave the High Holders with their ancient power and privilege, and the common people with nothing.

But the stakes are even higher than he realizes.

No matter what anyone claims, writers are made, not born, and what and how they write is the result of just how they were made… or how they made themselves. I began by writing poetry, which was published only in small magazines, and then went on to write administrative reports while I was a U.S. Naval aviator, followed by research papers, speeches, economic and technical studies, and policy and briefing papers. Along the way, I’ve been a delivery boy; a lifeguard; an unpaid radio disc jockey; a U.S. Navy pilot; a market research analyst; a real estate agent; director of research for a political campaign; legislative assistant and staff director for U.S. Congressmen; Director of Legislation and Congressional Relations for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; a consultant on environmental, regulatory, and communications issues; a college lecturer and writer in residence; and unpaid treasurer of a civic music arts association.

As a result, my writing tends to incorporate all of the above, in addition to the science fiction I read from a very early age. After more than seventy-five published novels, and nearly fifty short stories, it’s fairly clear to me that “what kind of writer” I am for readers tends to depend on which of my books each reader has read.

Along the way, I’ve weathered eight children, a fondness for three-piece suits [which has deteriorated into a love of vests], a brown Labrador, a white cockapoo, an energetic Shih-tzu, two scheming dachshunds, a capricious spaniel, a crazy Saluki-Aussie, and three very individualist cats. In 1989, to escape nearly twenty years of occupational captivity in Washington, D.C., I escaped to New Hampshire. There I was fortunate enough to find and marry a lovely lyric soprano, and we moved to Cedar City, Utah, in 1993, where she directs the voice and opera program at Southern Utah University and where I attempt to create and manage chaos in the process of writing.

This portrayal of the Kingdom that thrived under a benign dictatorship, the most efficient form of government, to a more flexible representative system is a fine tail of also stimulating reading.

The story kept pace and built up to an acceptable end. The plots felt like puzzles and were just difficult enough to be entertaining. The characters did not feel two dimensional and there was not a tidy bow at the end.

I raced through the final installment of the Imager Portfolio with anticipation and regret. I could not wait to see what happened next but I knew it was the final volume.
I thoroughly enjoyed the intrigue regarding the assassination attempts and the myriad problems facing Rex Charyn. I wasn't as much of a fan of the large quantity of correspondence to be read.

I have to admit that I am a big fan of the series and I love the process that they characters go through. I especially like that the characters all act in a rational manner, but not necessarily in the way that I would if I were in the same position. To me, that adds a lot of depth to the story. I am certain that some people will claim that the author is too formulaic in the approach -- to me it was no secret, even from the beginning as to the "whodumit" aspects of the story. It is identifiable because it really is the same pattern. However, I like the pattern and the characters are just different enough from the last set of characters to say that there is an interesting story to tell.

"Endgames" is a thoughtful and slowly paced final book in the Imager series. Rex Charyn is faced with a number of competing and antagonistic interests that he has to balance. Additionally he must deal with a foreign war, a budding romance, and a nascent free press.

The novel will be disappointing for those who love books with lots of action, but for those who enjoy a thoughtful narrative that comes to a satisfying conclusion, it's very enjoyable.

Modesitt's professional back in government flavors much of the novel, and although his worldbuilding is convincing, he has the liberty, unlike to real world, to build things that can be resolved into a happy conclusion.

Mr. Modesitt delivers his usual, crafted, story. Even though this is listed as the 12th in the Imager series, it is actually the third in the "local" run. As many of his timelines, the separate runs stand on their own.

If you are looking for an Imager story, you'll be disappointed. If you are looking for a story about the Rex dealing with policy issues in a reasonable way, you will enjoy the thinking of the protagonist.

In between there is a love story carried out in letters and poems. Similar to the relationships in Solar Express.

"Endgames" is the twelfth book in Modesitt's Imager Portfolio, a fantasy series set in a world where a tiny fraction of individuals--Imagers--have a magical ability to create things that they imagine. It's the second book in the series centered on Charyn, born the eldest son of the ruler of Solidar. Out of forty fantasy novels that I've read by Modesitt, the two about Charyn are the only ones whose protagonist lacks fantastical abilities. Charyn, especially in this second book, is trying very hard to do what is best for his country, against considerable opposition, and he does so without possessing even a modicum of magic.

As is probably clear by the number of books I've read by Modesitt (more than forty, since I've read some of his science fiction as well as most of his fantasy), I like his books very much. The style of "Endgames" might be perceived by some as dry; its pacing might be perceived as slow. I found it neither. That Charyn's efforts entail patience and diligence increases the book's immersive realism for me. Most of Modesitt's protagonists are, like Charyn, male, but his secondary characters include strong, intelligent, interesting women, and happily "Endgames" is no exception to this. His books usually also include a romantic thread. In "Endgames" much of the romance was conducted via letters and poetry, and this was handled nicely.

Modesitt is a thoughtful author, one who thinks out the economic, political, religious, cultural, and technological background of his stories. His fantasy oeuvre quietly examines the use and abuse of power, and the effect of different legal and political systems, though most of his other books do include more action and a higher bodycount than Charyn's story, which may give them broader appeal. I highly recommend the Imager Portfolio series in its entirety, and "Endgames" in particular.

L.E. Modesitt, Jr. writes very enjoyable stories. I read this one with some sadness, as it is the last of the Imager series, but ate it up all the same. If you have read other Modesitt novels, you know what to expect; a well crafted story with enjoyable characters that makes the whole very hard to put down. If you haven't read his stories before, you should. An exquisite, filling repast not to be missed!!

Another great read from one of my favourite authors. This is the last in the series unfortunately. I enjoyed the book that much I read it from start to finish in one marathon sitting. If you are a Modesit fan and have read the series in order this is one not to be missed. I felt the ending left the possibility of at least two more books but alas this is not to be. Not going to spoil the plot, but it trends to history repeating in some aspects. Not a good read, but a great read in my opinion!
