I Like it, but still doesn't beat Bose or Beoplay A2
I've tested a great many bluetooth speakers (non-portable, portable and ultra-portable) and headphones over the years. Although I'm clearly not an audiophile, I do enjoy the best sound - in the car, at home, in the office - and I have a lot of side-by-side listening to provide solid A/B feedback. I tend to test them out, return the ones that aren't good, keep those that are. And so I have.In the bigger bluetooth speaker area I like the Polk Woodbourne and Aiwa Exos-9 best. In the portable area I like the B&O Beolit 15 and absolutely LOVE the Klipsch KMC-3. Unfortunately, all of those except the Aiwa are discontinued. The ultra-portable category has been dominated in sound quality by the Bose Soundlink Mini / Mini II for more than 4 years - and that's for having tried a number of high-end competitors, including the Bowers & Wilkins T7 and KEF Gravity One, both of which were, frankly, abysmal in comparison to the Bose. Now, to the point: The B&O Beoplay A1. The biggest engineering challenge in a speaker this size, in my evaluation, is the ability to articulate bass. Many reviewers gravitate towards "it gets very loud" or "it doesn't get loud enough". I notice that - but frankly, don't care. I'm not buying a tiny speaker like the Bose or B&O to fill a gym or crank it out for a block party. It's a personal speaker - I use it on my desk, put it on the dresser in a hotel room while on business travel. Listen to music or movies at moderate volume. What I care about is, almost to the exclusion of everything else, the quality of sound, especially bass reproduction. Secondary considerations are construction quality and aesthetics, battery life, volumeB&O did a Good to Very Good job with this. It's small, it's pretty. You probably want to keep it in a pouch before you throw it in your backpack or suitcase, but it's definitely in the same volume/mass category as the Bose. See in the attached pics, different form factors but similar total size and weight. Both are naturally very well designed and executed, with attractive metal bodies / grille. Sound quality?Bose has the edge. Although their ostensible low-end frequency response is comparable, the Bose delivers much flatter, articulate bass right down to about 60Hz. You can easily defeat it - you'll hear sub-bass tones drop off, and at higher volumes the little bitty woofer and passive radiator just can't keep up with the mids and treble. I don't notice the bass fade at higher volumes on the B&O A1. But, at moderate listening levels, the Bose simply creates a more compelling delivery, surprising "oomph", warmth, "voice" at low tones. Additionally, perhaps due to the metal grille and somewhat unusual hockey-puck form factor, the B&O also does not reach the crisp highs as does the Bose - sparkling, precise treble well into the 15+KHz range. The B&O comes off a bit muffled, rounded off, maybe above the 8-10KHz range. I have docked the Bose half a notch for a very narrow sound stage, and to a degree, room placement; to get the most absolutely brilliant listening experience from the tiny thing, it is best situated 6 to 12 inches from a vertical corner, and you have to be almost directly in front of the unit. The treble is a bit "laser-like" in that respect - GOOD anywhere you stand, but mind-blowing when you're situated right within the soundstage. The B&O has a bit of oddness around treble as well. It's intended to be "360 degree" sound, and it is, but there are angles around the hockey puck that have a bit clearer treble than others. While the B&O clearly delivers good sound, and easily earns a long-in-coming, and hard-earned #3 slot in my ultra-portable stable, and is clearly the better of offerings from other esteemed names in the business (Bowers & Wilkins and KEF units named above), side by side, the Bose wins on sheer sound quality, and the A2 gives more kick, but at a larger size. I still would recommend buying this speaker if you want top-tier sound, in an extremely cool, swanky Scandinavian package. You would be doing very well in this category (littered with crummy product failures to deliver decent sound from a tiny package) with the Bose Soundlink Mini II, Soundlink Revolve+, B&O Beoplay A1 or B&O Beoplay A2. These are the only Very-good-to-great-sounding speakers I've tried to date. Among those, the Soundlink Mini still leads, but by a much narrower margin than before!

Full disclosure. I'm a Bang & Olufsen audio lover. I own multiple B&O systems and have enjoyed them for nearly 20 years.

I needed a portable speaker for use when I travel and inside my motorcycle trailer where there's frequently not electrical power. I wanted something with decent sound that was unobtrusive. I looked at a few of the other B&O portable bluetooth systems but their form factors did not work for what I had in mind. When I saw the A1 it was absolutely perfect. A small speaker I could put on the nightstand at the hotel or put on the table at the race track while resting and relaxing. I bought this unit fully expecting to accept some shortcomings due to it's size.

What was most amazing however is none of the shortcomings I expected exist on the A1. The A1 for it's size and power source is absolutely an amazing speaker. It has a very wide sound stage where the music seems 3 dimensional. It has amazing bass response for it's little size especially if it's placed against a surface it's able to use as a resonator. It fills the space with clear high quality sound. There's an application you can download on your iphone that allows you to change the acoustic response of the unit but I have found that the unit sounds the best with this switched off (it's quite useful as a battery level indicator however and for linking additional speakers). At any volume the sound is quite amazing and even at low volumes you get decent bass response.

This really is not your average bluetooth speaker. Most of the ones on the market sound harsh and have over-driven bass to make up for their small size. They will do of course but your ears can't wait until you get back to a decent car or home system. Bang & Oulfsen has always packed amazing sound into a small package but this little speaker seems to go a step beyond. To me at least it sounds like there's some type of smart amplifiers inside and a DSP system that adjusts the levels of the sound to optimize them for the internal drivers and is able to "throw" the sound around to create it's amazing sound stage. The sound surrounds you which really does not seem to be possible from such a small speaker.

I thought this would be a speaker I only used on the go but I find myself occasionally at home sitting next to B&O gear that costs way more wanting to have another listen to the A1 for just the sheer amazement factor of the sound that comes out of it. You expect their premium equipment to sound the way it does. No surprise there. When you get a great sound out of an inexpensive small speaker like the A1 it's a lot more fun. You feel like you are cheating a bit. Would I trade my premium B&O gear for all A1's? Not anytime soon. The A1 makes a great companion however when I can't bring those systems with me.

It's been a few weeks that I have received my A1 and I think it's time for a review. I hesitated for a while between this speaker and the Bose soundlink Mini II. My Brother owns the Bose and I was really impressed the first time I heard it. A lot of sound for such a small unit. I was going to get that one but then I discovered the A1 and really liked the design of this speaker. It slightly more expensive but I don't regret my purchase this is why:
    Pro:
    - Battery last longer compared to Bose
    - Sounds is really good more natural then B&O
    - design and quality build are great
    - The app works great but I don't use it often. With it you can change the sound "color" like "Lounge" or "excited"
    - you can pair two unit to make a stereo system. Haven't tried it but like the idea! But for the price of two units you could get a more powerful speaker in that price range.

    Cons:
    - no charger, just a USB cable to charge, but really not an issue as you can plug in pretty much any USB port, apple iPhone /iPad charger. I do have a lot of extra one accumulated other the years and therefore not and issue. But it's not really clear when you purchase, and the Bose comes with a cradle base to recharge. Not an option here
    - the control are minimalist and incorporated on the soft rubber outer ring. Impossible to see without a light at night. They could have put a little indentation on the rubber or above on the metal casing.

Overall really happy with the purchase and suprised by how much I use it now.
I also bought a third party leather cover on amazon and love it. It really protect well the unit when carrying and looks really good.

Go with this speaker and you won't be disappointed.

Ps: on a side note, wait till you get a full charge before testing it since the speaker will only play at full volume on a charged battery. Also, I thought the speaker sounded better after about a week of usage.

I have the JBL Xtreme speaker which has great sound and more volume and is water proof but the B&O speaker is superior in terms of sound quality. There is plenty of volume for indoors. Good bass for such a small speaker and the design and appearance are pure B&O, high quality. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.
