I love all the Enchantimals ! Cutest! I have almost the whole set.

I love Enchantimals. I admire their details, their uniquenesses, the attention to detail in the design. I mean, I do have them all. The duck is my 80th of the 6-inch dolls, and I've also got all of the minis and the big "huggables" size. I do love these dolls. Usually.

I’ve waited a long time for a duck Enchantimals! A couple of years ago I saw a photo online of a prototype for a duck Enchantimals doll in a rainy day theme and I LOVED IT! I love rain, so I’d LOVE a whole series of rainy day Enchantimals dolls! However, Mattel nixed that wonderful prototype and released, instead, this farm theme series. Farm. YAAWWWWWN. We do get some lovely dolls in this theme, even with the overused country-farm-denim-plaid thing they have going on with their recent releases. And of course we FINALLY get a duck, although I doubt they set out to release a duck.

      I’ll explain.

Looking over the doll that comes with this set, nothing about it visually communicates the idea of duck. The Enchantimals standard is that the dolls are covered in details that relate to the animal. The shoe mold details, the skirt fabric print, etc., all are based on the animal. Not in this case. It appears that the designers planned a farm-themed doll without any clue what kind of animal the doll would be. When the power that be decided it would be a duck, they threw on plastic wings and copied the swan doll’s feather hairpiece, and that’s all we get that’s in any way duck related.

I appreciate that the shoes are a new mold. (I was sure I’d seen them before, but looking through my other 79 Enchantimals dolls, I can’t find that shoe mold among any of them, so I must be just remembering the product photo.) However, the shoes are generic, not animal-specific as most Enchantimals shoes are. I’d prefer that they give this doll the penuin’s webbed-feet shoes than give them a new shoe mold that has nothing to do with ducks. Of course the generic ones will work better for mix-and-match dress up play with other dolls, but not including duck-specific details makes this release look lazy and poorly planned.

The other giveaway that this doll wasn’t intended to be a duck is the torso and skirt. The main color is red. Red. RED. RED? RED?! What kind of farm duck is red? I mean, sure there are some ducks with red in their coloring, but this one is clearly based on a farm duck, an idea reinforced by the inclusion of yellow ducklings and a yellow feather hairpiece and yellow pair of wings. In the product photo, the shoes appear to be orange, but in person they’re a dark coral, which doesn’t even match the all-red outfit. I suspect that this doll was originally planned to be a rooster, but then when they decided on the male rooster doll, they changed this one to a duck. I can’t make that claim for sure, but it appears that way to me. What other farm animal would be red?

Now, of course, she is a lovely doll and for the most part well-made. The design just isn’t up to Enchantimals usual standard of animal-themed detail.

As for the basics, as usual the painted-on swimsuit is a solid color (red in this case) with detail painted only on the top of the front. Surprisingly, the paint is a bit sloppy on this release; the red shirt paint extends onto her neck in patchy splotches, and the whole front shirt detail is off to the side of where it should be. The skirt is the standard thin fabric with painted-on unique pattern. For the first time in several releases, we have a return to a decorative cut along the bottom of the skirt, and the skirt has returned to the wide style rather than the narrow cut most recent Enchantimals dolls have had. The pattern design, unlike most Enchantimals fabric patterns, has nothing to do with the animal; the pattern is just fruit and veg with water droplets. Lemons, cucumbers, avocado, apples, watermelon, oranges, and broccoli? What do those things have to do with ducks? I HAVE ducks. Ducks don’t eat that stuff.

The plastic wings and plastic feather hairpiece both have to be held on by plastic pieces. The wings come with a rubber band wrapped around them to hold them onto the doll; removing the rubber band makes it difficult to keep the wings on the doll. The hairpiece comes with plastic ties attaching them to the doll’s head; cut the ties, and the hairpiece will no longer stay on the doll’s head. I’m not a fan of accessories that require attachment by disposable bits like rubber bands and plastic ties. We’ve had plenty of Enchantimals accessories that attach to the doll without outside means; these accessories that can’t stay on the doll on their own contribute to the lazy, unplanned feel that this doll design has.

Articulation is the Enchantimals standard. Neck goes side to side. Shoulders are ball joints. Hips go front to back, straight, without the weird V-shape that some dolls have. The knees are not articulated. No Enchantimals so far have had articulated elbows or wrists. Feet are not articulated and are molded in a tippy-toe stance (ugh).

      The Duckling Pets
The three baby ducklings are adorable-cubed! They’re the same as the duckling that came with the horse set. The three babies have the same mold. The only difference is the eye paint: one has both eyes open, one is winking, and one has both eyes closed.
The larger duckling, however, has the fatal flaw of Enchantimals pets: huge gaping hole in the back of its neck. The duck’s skin around the hole is contorted into a claw shape. The intent is to clip onto a doll’s arm so she “holds” the pet, but it doesn’t work. First, the claw is so rubbery it doesn’t hold. If you manage to get it onto the doll’s arm, it doesn’t look at all like she’s holding the pet; it looks like the pet is levitating in front of the doll’s arm. Then, because the claw doesn’t hold, the pet swings forward and dangles like a purse made out of a hollowed-out animal corpse. Creepy.

How I Plan to Custom-Improve This Doll
My plan is to make the doll a more duck-appropriate outfit. I have a spare penguin doll that I’d been saving to give to a young relative. I think I’ll swipe the extra penguin’s webbed-feet shoes to give to the duck doll. I’ll try to make a fabric-cape style set of wings like the swan and some of the other bird Enchantimals have.
As is my new standard, I’ll bend the pet’s claw sides into the hole and add some krazy glue to hold it down. It won’t cover the entire hole, but the two narrow slits are a lot less disturbing than the huge gaping hole.

      Closing Thoughts
Enchantimals should’ve stuck with their first duck prototype theme. I’m sure the rainy day theme would have been MUCH more popular and loved than the farm theme and the hastily-throw-together duck doll. I hope they rethink their choice when they see this doll not doing as well in sales as previous dolls. Rain is a popular theme, in general. People love cozy rain jackets and fun rain boots. These days you can’t get little girls to wear any other shoes to school, so half the kids show up in rain boots even if it’s the middle of a drought. Enchantimals missed out by pushing aside their rainy day duck prototype.

Dear Enchantimals, please revive the rainy day theme and make a proper duck. And nix those hole-and-claw pets. Thanks.
