”There’s no such thing as a designer of menswear-—it’s only history. The suit around the world is based on the english suit, which began in about 1670.
Any man, whether he’s american, japanese, french or whatever, who wants to be seriously well dressed, looks to the englishman’s suit for how to achieve it.”—from abc of men’s fashion

An Informative Bookby Mr. Clean (5 out of 5 stars)

This book was originally published in 1964 and sometimes it sounds like it with references to "what will the Beatles wear in the future" and things like that. It was updated in 2007 but many of the references sound dated and were apparently left as-is. It's actually a sort of dictionary with alphabetical listings of style items. It could use more pictures. Photos of the fedora hats look rather ridiculous because they're oddly shaped but "modern" for the 60s. Most of the photos are obviously pictures of 1960s clothing...skinny trousers and even skinnier jackets. Many of the references, though, are timeless as good style is. Even though it has some tiny faults the book is very well written and witty. For instance, the author describes what a deerstalker hat is by saying "Sherlock Holmes can wear one. You can't." The author also does not like trouser cuffs (called "turn ups")! It's a nice reference book to have nonetheless and a nice read.
Basically a fashion dictionary.

Pretty useless. It's more of a dictionary on fashion terms than an actual mens style fashion guide. I was completely unsatisfied.
However, the build quality on the book is very nice. Great paper, nice elastic band to keep the book together, and a pleasing texture on the cover. Wish the contents were as satisfying.
definitely a must have

Good basic overview of better menswear. Not really applicable to most off the shelf clothing .

Absolute joy to read, a good bit of humor, and the perfect coffee table or waiting room reader. Great gift for any man.

As many reviews stated, it is more like a dictionary of terms but the information is interesting.
Not A Book to Read

I bought this book after seeing a video about Hardy Amies. Its an interesting book but its not really a reading book like I thought. More of a dictionary of fashion terms. Overall I like the book though. Just not what I thought it was.
Solid but dated advice

This is a great book to learn and understand the basics of men's fashion. Some of the comments are a bit dated, and clearly lean towards ideas more prevalent in Europe than in the states. But as a primer on the basics of what is what, and when to wear it...this is a solid reference for your book shelf.
