Product Description
Now a #1 New York Times Bestseller! In the summer of 2010, photographer Brandon Stanton began an ambitious project -to single-handedly create a photographic census of New York City. The photos he took and the accompanying interviews became the blog Humans of New York. His audience steadily grew from a few hundred followers to, at present count, over eighteen million. In 2013, his book Humans of New York, based on that blog, was published and immediately catapulted to the top of the NY Times Bestseller List where it has appeared for over forty-five weeks. Now, Brandon is back with the Humans of New York book that his loyal followers have been waiting for: Humans of New York: Stories. Ever since Brandon began interviewing people on the streets of New York, the dialogue he's had with them has increasingly become as in-depth, intriguing and moving as the photos themselves. Humans of New York: Stories presents a whole new group of people in stunning photographs, with a rich design and, most importantly, longer stories that delve deeper and surprise with greater candor. Let Brandon Stanton and the Humans of New York he's photographed astonish you all over again.Features

The HONY you've come to know and love!by Chilehead Craig (5 out of 5 stars)
October 13, 2015
~~~~~~~~~It appears Amazon posted my review under both books Humans of New York and HONY Stories. The review below is intended to be for Stories ONLY~~~~~~~~~~~
While Brandon's first release was an excellent book of photography, it lacked many of the stories behind the individuals. I came to find HONY on facebook and feel the story behind the photo is half the experience. With his newest release, it all comes together to give you the full HONY package that most people have come to know and love. This book is a bargain for all the passion and work that Brandon puts into this project.
If you are deciding on whether or not to buy the book, consider the following, which Brandon posted on the HONY facebook page: "I want to take a quick opportunity to remind everyone that HONY is advertisement free and almost entirely financed by book sales. (The only exception being income from a handful of speeches I give every year.) Proceeds from books have been used to pay for trips to twenty different countries over the past year alone. Even when working with large organizations like the United Nations or UNHCR, I'm always very careful to cover all costs and reimburse any expenses. I do this so that the content on HONY can remain entirely independent, self-directed, and transparent. By purchasing a book, you can help HONY continue to grow in a way that remains focused on telling people's stories--- and nothing else. Thanks to everyone for your continued support."
Connect with real people. Get out of your box and learn about people different from you. Get to know their story. Support the project. Buy the book!
A Laser-Beam of Empathy, Joy, Sadness, and Hope
by Reasons My Son Is Crying (5 out of 5 stars)
This book. THIS BOOK. I've purchased all three Humans of New York books and have loved them all, but in Humans of New York - Stories, it all comes together. The photography is expressive, and the stories are equal parts soul-crushing and uplifting. The masterful way that Brandon interviews his subjects really shines through. I've followed Humans of New York for 4 years and am just in awe of it's revolutionary transformation and it's power to do good in this world. Even something went unspeakably wrong and against all odds the book was garbage (it isn't) you STILL should buy it, if for nothing more than to cast a vote of support for the JOY, LOVE, and EMPATHY that HONY provides. This is a voice of hope and kindness in a world that can occasionally strip you of both. In HONY there is no "Us vs. Them" - there's only WE and Brandon has shown us that together, WE can do anything.
... book to have on the living room table for bored times browsing
by Flors (5 out of 5 stars)
At first you think this is a book to have on the living room table for bored times browsing. Then you start reading it and you realise individuals talk to you from its pages and tell you their most authentic stories. I was captivated by the number of persons I have listened to in the last 2 days and 428 pages. It should be a page like this for every person on Earth so that you can listen to him or her....so that they feel heard. So many realities described, shuttered dreams and hopes. Some joyful moments too but mainly struggle. But that's making life what it is. The question you remain with is: who are you? This book reminds you that you are human, that other human there are fighting daily just like you, that some of us are being spoiled by life while others did not get this chance. And I know it but is still good to have it reminded in such a peaceful way.
My Strongest Recommendation
I discovered "Humans of New York" after seeing a NY Times article about Brandon Stanton. After looking at the Humans of New York website and twitter feed I was hooked and just had to get the book. I almost always buy kindle books (shelf space/reading in bed) but knew this was a rare treasure that I would want preserved forever in hardback. I was right.
No bones about it- I adore this book. The extensive "Look Inside" feature (which for some reason is showing up on the hardcover edition but not the kindle?) and description cover what you can expect from the book so I won't describe it here. I imagine that some people may wonder "So- pictures and quotes from the subjects, nothing else? What's the big deal?" That IS the big deal- no comment, no judgement just the humans of New York revealed in stunning photos and their own words.
And the photographs ARE stunning. Brandon Stanton is first and foremost a photographer. The photos in this book are absolutely amazing. From the heartbreaking, desolate "I don't want to live anymore." to the joyous, riotous colors of "We're the Eco Adventure Club!" each photo is a gorgeous testament to Stanton's artistry. And whether combined with a few words or a few paragraphs, you feel that you have met and learned at least a small amount about each person.
I bought this thinking that it was something I could read a few pages at a time here and there. And you could do that- except it's addictive. Reading the book straight through is an experience not to be missed. All the clichés are true- there is a never-ending diversity in humans and their experiences but we are really all the same.
There are books that I love and recommend to readers of their genre. But "Humans of New York" transcends genre and is a book every human can enjoy. Whether you are a complete misogynist or a great humanitarian, at minimum the book will fascinate but more likely you will find it as amazing as I do.
Brandon Stanton is changing the world!
by Heather (5 out of 5 stars)
I have waited so patiently for this book, and the day finally arrived! As much as I love Brandon Stanton's other books, Humans of New York and Little Humans, this is the one that most closely represents the posts I look forward to reading every day on the Internet. In fact, I left Facebook years ago, and HONY is the only reason I remain on Instagram. It has become my morning paper.
The photos were only one piece. Reading stories of random people (and I'll always wonder how Brandon chooses who to interview) has changed me. I now assume that everyone has a story because, chances are, they do. We need to treat everyone we meet with the same compassion because we are completely unaware of their feelings, sense of self worth, past or current life struggles and emotional hardships. We don't know how hard they've worked to either get where they are or to build their dreams just to have them shattered by circumstance.
I sincerely hope that Brandon releases a book in the future based on his travels across the globe. My daughter wants to join me for field work to aid Syrian refugees (I'm in a graduate program in global health) because of the stories Brandon Stanton helped to share. He is truly changing the world, not simply by raising millions of dollars for causes we all believe in, but by changing the perspectives of our youth. This is a big deal, and purchasing this book is a wonderful way for you to be a part of this slow transformation of humankind. I cannot recommend this enough. 10 stars!
Amazing! Everything from sad stories to happy endings.
The crisp, glossy pages of this book reflects the life of people all across New York. Ranging from Children to Presidents, you'll find everything from sad stories to happy endings. It's great to sit on the couch and flip through the lives of other random people. It's written so you can just pick up the book and start reading on whatever page you find. The photos are large, colorful, and really well done. Highly recommend this book.
Brandon is an amazing photographer, storyteller, and in general a great human being. I learned to look up to him about what he does and what he brings us in his art. Brandon travels the world asking strangers about their past, present, even future and quotes their beautiful stories under their photos. He asks people from ALL different walks of life... poor, rich, edgy, hip, young, old, wild, quiet, the list goes on! It lets us into other peoples lives making us realize we arent alone in our struggles and makes us realize other people are humans too! Sometimes we tend to ignore the people next to us or tend to judge by looks, his books reminds us not too!! I absolutely LOVE this collection of his stories from New York. I personally hope he makes way more books not just the 2 he has now.
I HIGHLY recommend this book, it may crush your heart at times but other times it'll warm it.
We as humans need to be more compassionate towards each other, especially strangers, cuz you never know what battles they may be facing...
I like reading the stories on Instagram
I'm not going to lie, I bought this only to support Brandon in his cause. I like reading the stories on Instagram, but I probably wouldn't have bought an entire book of them. It sat on my coffee table for a few weeks before I even cracked the cover. One night I decided to pick it up and I couldn't put it down. Everyone was long asleep by the time I was done...I laughed and even cried at a few. Great Job, Brandon. Have already recommended it to family members.
Amazing Book
I follow the Facebook page but there's something about holding a tangible book and reading through all the stories in 2 nights that make it better. I have bookmarked my favorite pages with post-it notes for stories that resonated with me. It's also a great book to share with family and to teach children not to judge people by their appearance.
The HONY book is beautiful, and I'm really glad the photographer added in the caption stories as I heard that his first book only had pictures. The stories make it much more emotional and a treasured read.
I hope he makes another book that focuses on his international travels because I would buy that book in a heartbeat.
humanity and love that shine through
by Jeremy Sanderson (5 out of 5 stars)
November 16, 2015
A heart warming mirror held up to humanity. It starkly exposes the degradation of urban life for those whom society has failed, or who have failed themselves, but equally the gritty realities are for the most part surpassed by the warmth of hope, humanity and love that shine through. The book illustrates the fundamental survivability of the human species, and inescapable truth that most people are decent, compassionate, loving and wonderful. I do hope Brandon follows this up with a volume of stories and pictures from his recent trips to Pakistan and Iran. Brandon, if you're reading this, thank you for starting this wonderful project, and don't let up now. This thing has legs!
