Wonderful zombie survival handbook that won't strain your ability to suspend disbeliefby Laura D. (5 out of 5 stars)

I have been getting into the TV shower The Walking Dead lately and in discussing the show with my nephew I expressed my disappointment that the zombies really test my suspension of disbelief. My biggest criticism the zombies are decomposing, eventually all their soft tissue should decay to the point where it can no longer connect the bodies anymore, yet they just keep right on going (just one example). My nephew told me about this book and I bought it on Kindle that very night.
This is a wonderfully thoughtful manual. The science of how zombies come to be is explained in great and believable detail. The author (son of actor Mel Brooks) creates a universe where zombies are simply real and gives realistic instructions on how to protect yourself in a variety of situations. His in depth comparison of various weaponry, ranging from fire arms, to knives, to crow bars, is too detailed and vast for my taste, but probably essential information in the event of a zombie apocalypse. His illustrations can be crude and basic, but also hilarious. And his accounts of documented zombie attacks are genius and completely believable. I truly feel I have a good understanding of what is needed if the zombie problem gets out of hand.
Kind of a hoot and a novelty. I'm easily amused.

After ordering this book and in anticipation of its arrival I ventured to my local gas station to procure what I mistakenly presumed was the preeminent zombie survival weapon, that being the venerable and highly revered Z-Hunter.
Well you can imagine my surprise to learn right there on page thirty five that serrations on a knife are far from ideal for use in a zombie attack. Spoiler alert: it turns out the the serrations can and have become hung up on the skull of a dispatched zombie leaving one defenseless.
Well now I'm even more distraught since the gas station will not give me my six bucks back claiming that I caused some so-called quality issues with the Z-Hunter. So it goes.
Beyond that, the book is kind of a hoot albeit mostly a novelty to own. No regrets on the purchase. Makes a nice companion to World War Z by the same author.
A Must-Read for History and Nonfiction Buffs Who Want to Get Out More

The survival guide is interesting and amusing, but it's the Recorded Attacks history at the end that really nails it for me. It reads like real history. The whole book shows that Brooks' zombies, infected and reanimated by a fictional virus called Solanum, function within a framework of realistic rules that makes them all the more terrifying. I never cared much for the zombie genre until I read this and World War Z - now I'm wishing there was more in Brooks' universe.
Very well researched! NOT a JOKE!

Don't let the title fool you. This is not some sci fi stuff but actual facts. Read it and you will be surprised what you learn. Not a joke this was approved buy the dept of defense! IT's coming sooner than you thin! The virus is already for deployment. What do you do when you meet one face to face? This book tells you in simple terms what to expect. And how to prepare. What's smart and what's foolish. Easy to read and understand.
Classic Survival Guide

The Zombie Survival Guide is a parody. Are zombies real? Probably not, although there are cultures who create zombies using neurotoxins. Can zombies become a reality? Have you ever taken the subway on a Monday morning?
I first read this book years ago and absolutely love it! Max Brooks gives an in-depth tutorial into evasion, encounter and combat with the living impaired. The Zombie Survival Guide should be an essential addition to your pack, luggage or purse.
Don't become a card-carrying member of the undead. Read this and survive to fight another day.
It's not just about zombies

What we have here is really a general purpose disaster preparedness guide disguised as entertainment.
Admit it: those official government guides are duller than dishwater. Remember those old Civil Defense booklets about how to survive a nuclear war? How about the Y2K disaster-that-didn't-happen? Or the current crop of Homeland Security sites about what to do if al-Qaeda shows up in your hometown and starts blowing things up? The threat may change, but the advice is the same. And so is the tone. Unfortunately.
What Max Brooks has cleverly done is to leverage a fanciful scenario (a mass attack of the undead) to get the reader to think about real disasters (e.g., storms, earthquakes, etc.) and how to prepare for them. Granted, it's unlikely you'll stop a hurricane with a machete, but--as recent events have shown--you're much more likely to survive the aftermath, when emergency services may be hard to come by for several days or even weeks, if you're prepared.
A seminal and classic book

This well-crafted and insightful work is a delight to read. Packed with helpful survival hints for dealing with Level 1 to 3 zombie infestations. Sadly however the author presents compelling evidence in support of his sobering conclusion that human survival is only marginally probable in the case of a Level 4 global zombie pandemic.
The book's contents are logically arranged and feature a contextual background, a detailed review of tactics and strategies to combat various threat levels as well as an informative chronological set of zombie outbreak case histories. Most interesting to this reviewer was the practical approach adopted by a determined Roman commander based in North Britain facing a mass zombie horde just on 2,000 years ago: channel, decapitate, burn and instantly euthenize one's own wounded.
One proviso I have to mention is that the book is premised on the existence of only one type of premordial non-evolving zombie. For example, the author does not acknowledge the risks associated with latter-day perverted science such as the well documented Green Flu research programme involving genetic modification of various strains of rabies virus and which many believe pose a greater and more immediate prejudice to human societies.

Indespensable reading for anyone who finds themselves under zombie-attack: "The Zombie Survival Guide is your key to survival against the hordes of undead who may be stalking you right now. Fully illustrated and exhaustively comprehensive, this book covers everything you need to know, including how to understand zombie physiology and behavior, the most effective defense tactics and weaponry, ways to outfit your home for a long siege, and how to survive and adapt in any territory or terrain." Support Max Brooks. He has seen the light. The soulless zombie-squirrels are coming. They are called stalkers. "A book you start reading for fun and then at page 50 you go out and buy a machete just to be on the safe side." -- New York Post
The Zombies Are Coming! Are You Ready? - Recommended

"The Zombie Survival Guide" is a very enjoyable satire that will be enjoyed by most Zombie aficionados. Max Brooks (the son of Mel Brooks) has written this rather serious toned guide to preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse that we all know is coming. The humor of the book isn't the "laugh out loud" type, but rather in the absurdity of the work as whole, so if that isn't what you want you might be happier with Zombocalypse Now (which I also enjoyed).
The zombies covered in this guide are the truly dead, that is the Night of the Living Dead shuffler type that can only be stopped by a head shot, not the messed up living human type like found in 28 Days Later (Widescreen Edition) and Zombieland that can be taken out like any other human. This is an important distinction as it makes a big difference in your choice of weapons for your zombie fighting arsenal. So, with that distinction made, adjust your expectations (and strategies) accordingly.
Max takes us through the cause of the zombie condition, rates the risk classifications by breakout type, suggests strategies, and presents equipment lists to deal with all of the various threat levels. There is also a section on the history of zombie outbreaks as derived from archeological evidence through more modern accounts, which was enjoyable but I found to be the weakest chapter.
Keeping in mind that this is an elaborate work of satire, there are some factual errors that might cause purists to take offense (like a reference to "Nanook of the North" dying of starvation when it was actually likely Tuberculosis) and the effectiveness and use of certain weapons against zombies.
Overall, this is clever work that provides an amusing insight into the strategies needed to survive the coming Zombie Apocalypse.

Well written easy to follow

Within a very short time I realized that I had devoured over a hundred pages after just receiving the book. It is very well written easy to read and follow and I'm finding that because of the way it is written I'm able to retain what I have read. My sister teased me when I sent her a text of my bug out plan in case of a zombie invasion and she wanted to know how long I have been thinking that and I said since I started this book. It was really quite funny and satisfying to see how much information I had retained. This book is actually really handy to have to help prepare for any kind of disaster where you are forced to leave your home for what be an extended stay and I will be using it to make sure that I have the things I need just in case the Zombies hit our small community next!
