Great, but could have been better
by Ash (3 out of 5 stars)
March 25, 2018

This is a great idea for a tarot card deck. I'm a total GoT nerd and was super excited to get this deck and see what kinds of parallels the creators drew between traditional Tarot archetypes and the magical world of Game Of Thrones. To start off, (much of) the artwork is great, and I love that it all comes in a nice box with an easy-reference guidebook. However, I have to say, I was expecting much more creatively from the conceptual side.

There are so many storylines and complexities that happen in the series, I really thought the content of these cards would be more diverse. It felt heavy on Danyerys imagery, which, understandably, she is a very important character. However they could have used more minor characters and scenes to illustrate points just as well. There was no Tywin Lannister, no Dornish princes/queens/kings, no Robb Stark, no Catelyn Stark, no Yara Greyjoy, no Theon Greyjoy, no Bronn of the Blackwater, no Baratheons, no Margaery Tyrell, no Joffrey Baratheon, no Podrick, no Cleganes, no Ser Davos, etc. The houses were all mentioned or illustrated, but it might have been more interesting to really show more of the characters of the houses.

Some of the cards also seemed like a stretch, like, was a Son of The Harpy really the best choice for Page Of Swords? Sure, the Sons Of The Harpy were passionate about an idea, but instead of a new idea, they were fighting to keep their old ideas. When I saw the Four Of Coins card, I thought, what even is this from? I mean maybe they could have used Bronn there, since he was all about being paid and improving his situation. On the Eight Of Coins card, it looks like a scene with Gendry, but it's just a random "apprentice", like, why not just put Gendry there and connect it directly? I know I'm nerding myself out here, but, it just could have been better.

As others have already said, the cards also seem to be made of regular playing cards material, just tarot-sized. Maybe they weren't sure how well this product would sell, and wanted to keep it as afforable as possible? Who knows.

All of my criticisms aside, it is overall a nice deck, and there are some cards that really hit the nail on the head for the concept and art. I think any GoT fan would enjoy it, and be able to understand the mood of the cards.

Overall I love it. The packaging of the cards is excellent
by Susan (4 out of 5 stars)

This tarot set consists of the standard 78 RWS cards. I have attached pictures. Overall I love it. The packaging of the cards is excellent. Very solid box to store the cards and guidebook in. Very classy. Inside the box, you find the cards are on the left and the guidebook on the right.

The guidebook looks like a little book. Nicely done. It devotes a full page (sometimes two) for each of the 22 major arcana cards. Unfortunately the minor arcana cards limited to tiny paragraphs jammed onto the same pages (see pic). I have seen this before in other decks, but I was really hoping for full treatment on all cards.

My biggest complaint is related to the cards themselves. The artwork is awesome and as a GoT fan I loved the subject matter they chose for the traditional cards. (i.e. Ramsey Bolton as The Devil) My disappointment is with the quality of the cardstock used for the cards. They are really thin. If you plan to actively use your deck, buy another one to put away. I do not think these will last with regular use.

Overall I recommend it. Would make a great gift for the GoT fan in your life. For the tarot practitioner just be warned about the thin cardstock. Kudos to the artists involved in this project. It really is a beautiful offering. Thank you!

That really killed how much I like the deck
by Amazon Customer (3 out of 5 stars)

My only complaint is that the deck uses only a small handful of characters and repeats many of them 2-3 times. I think Bran is even in it 4 times. With so many characters in GOT, it seems very odd not to include more of them and instead repeat so many characters so frequently. That really killed how much I like the deck.

That being said, the card stock has a nice rough texture to it and it's printed very well. The books is very nicely made, far better then I expected of any book I have gotten with a deck before. Overall, I'm glad to have it in my collection.

Blown away!
by Emeyeaye (5 out of 5 stars)

I am blown away! Two of my biggest passions, Game of Thrones and tarot melded together beautifully and I couldn't be happier with it!

So much care went into the packaging to really make it feel like an experience. Opening the box was like opening a gift! The little white book is actually a tiny hardcover book which gave the overall package even more of that GOT rustic feel. The cards themselves are LINEN CARDSTOCK!!! I personally LOVE linen cardstock and I know that it's not a universal feeling. But for me, it was a dream to hold the deck in my hands. I actually could not believe that it was mass produced that way as I usually find linen cardstock is more common in self-published decks which tend to be on the more expensive side. So that was a really pleasant surprise. The cards are the perfect size; not uncomfortably large or smaller than the average tarot card. The imagery is phenomenal. I really feel that they took pivotal characters and scenes from the show and incorporated it really well into the meaning of each card. Obviously there are dozens of scenes that could go well with many of the cards, but what was chosen still made sense to me. There is a somber feel to the deck due to the dark colors used throughout (which can't be escaped, it is GOT after all lol), but it was juxtaposed nicely with the graphic kind of artwork used to create the images.

I didn't care too much about spears being used in place of wands, but that is a non-issue for me and something I can easily overlook. I also would have preferred if the deck came with its own smaller box as well. Unless you use bags for your cards, which I do not, you must keep the cards in the large Game of Thrones keepsake box it comes in, as the deck itself did not come in its own box as most mass-produced decks do. But again, that is really a non-issue for me given how blown away I was with not only the packaging of the deck, but the deck itself and the little white "book."

This is a wonderful deck for tarot collectors, tarot enthusiasts/readers, and fans of the series. I will say that I have not read the books and have only seen the show, so it was really nice to see the familiar characters/scenes from the show being used in the deck.

It was 100% worth the wait!

Different card stock :(
by Mila (3 out of 5 stars)
February 1, 2019

I received the cards an hour ago. Everything seemed fine until I unwrapped the deck and noticed that the card stock is nothing like other reviewers mentioned. My deck doesn't have a texture others have talked about. My deck is basically a regular paper. There is no coating to protect the cards. It makes handling the deck difficult. One of the cards already started to split on the edge just from one good session of shuffling. My hands felt very dry after handling these cards for a few minutes, because they create friction when you try to fan them out or just shuffling. I own many tarot and Oracle decks and this is a first one with no coating. I usually don't care if cards are thick or thin, but they can't just be regular paper that feels like a notebook cover (same texture and thickness). I doubt cards will last. You know how sometimes a few top cards slide off when you put the deck down on table, well, not this one! The cards stay in place, which just tells you how dry the paper is.

On the other hand, images are great! Love them all! I did a 10 card spread and the messages were so clear! The book is small, but card descriptions are well done, short and to the point. Overall, I would recommend the deck to GOT fans. I could see how men would prefer this tarot deck over any other if they asked for a reading. Even my husband, who doesn't care about tarot, but loves the show, took the interest in seeing the deck after I opened it. Again, creators of this deck did a great job picking images that truly tell a story, but the card stock is like they have been meant for Dollar Store. Very cheap. I took a few pictures to show the texture, but the lightning wasn't very good. I hope the review was helpful!

A good deck that could have been great.
by Lindsay Parkhurst,Top Contributor: Pets (4 out of 5 stars)

I have super mixed feelings about this deck. The artwork is beautiful, the cardstock feels very nice and unique in my hands, albeit not very durable, the cards are nice and large, the back of the cards is symmetrical so I can't tell when a card is reversed (which I prefer) and the deck is readable. The guidebook is an adorable tiny hardcover book but weak in information. It seems like this deck was made by someone with a skimmed knowledge of both tarot and Game of Thrones. The interpretations are a bit shallow and rely too much on visual and literal parallels. That said, it is very useful to see how the artist meant for the deck to be read.

My biggest complaint about this deck is that it could have been so, SO awesome. The potential is incredible, it's almost frustrating that the opportunity was missed. Several main and important minor characters are absent. Several scenes that lend themselves to the journey of tarot are missing. There are too many cards with Daenarys and Jon Snow, definitely too many cards featuring Ramsay and his banner, entirely too many cards featuring Lord Baelish, and too many cards showing faceless warriors when they could have used a real character in a scene. I do not agree with a few of the scenes and characters chosen which makes reading with the deck a bit difficult. Such as Varys as the Hierophant, when the High Sparrow absolutely should have been in that spot. I don't think Varys fits that role at all except for looking like a monk. And the moon door as the Moon is just...forced. There are better options. And Ramsay as the Knight of Swords?? Ooooook. Varys fits there better than Ramsay.

Most of the characters that should have been included are mentioned in other reviews, (but the Hound IS included, he is the Knight of Cups, pictured with his helmet on). It's just a shame because this would easily be my new favorite tarot deck if more characters and influential scenes had been included. Using Spears instead of Wands when the suit of Swords remains is also slightly confusing. The 3 of Swords was disappointing because they used RWS imagery to the T. It's rare to find a deck with an original 3 of Swords card for some reason. My last complaint is that most of the scenes used are either from Season 1 or Season 6-7. The bulk of the show feels missed.

There are plenty of cards I do really enjoy, such as The Sun which has a certain glow that a picture just couldn't capture. Many cards I feel match up with their meanings well, such as the Wheel of Fortune and the 5 of Cups. I do recommend this deck for any tarot-reading Game of Thrones fans as the deck is readable and has a very clear personality. I like it a lot which is why the imagery choices bother me so much. Submitting to the meanings of the cards that I don't agree with will be a challenge but that's what tarot reading is all about. I'm excited to see what becomes of this deck when the show is complete.

Great deck and ties in well with show & books
by Reader (5 out of 5 stars)
March 20, 2018

I have been reading tarot cards for years, for my own enjoyment. As an avid Game of Thrones fan, I was hoping I would connect with this set, and I can already tell I do. (I have bought tons of decks only to revert to my favorite; I think I may actually be using these frequently.) The cards are very well done with beautiful art that really evokes the world presented by the books and HBO series. I highly recommend this deck whether this is your first deck or you have more experience reading.

The cards are of a size for traditional shuffling, which I appreciate. The box the cards and hardcover Guidebook come in is of nice quality and suitable for permanent storage of the cards. The four suits used are spears, swords, cups, and coins. Interestingly, the same character represents multiple "people" in the deck - for example, Daenerys is both The Empress and the Queen of Spears. I would think they could have added more characters, but perhaps thought the major characters embodied the idea behind certain cards more than other characters they could have chosen, or thought fans would rather have more of their favorite characters present. The only text on the minor arcana is what they are, i.e. Ace of Cups, which is different from my favorite deck The Enchanted Tarot: 25th Anniversary Edition
, which has, for example, "Love" as a description on the Ace of Hearts. When I first started reading, I found those one-word descriptions quite helpful, but it no longer bothers me not to have them. It just may mean for a beginner, you need to consult the Guidebook more, or rely on your own intuition or knowledge of the books & show. I sometimes view tarot reading as similar to a Rorschach test, where you are really simply getting in touch with your own feelings - there is no "wrong" way to read the cards.

To learn some of the cards' traditional meaning, you must consult the Guidebook that comes with the cards, as the images may seem incongruous for some cards. For example, the Fool and the Hanged Man do not on their face show their traditional meanings; the Fool is Tyrion and the Hanged Man is Bolton's Flayed Man flag. (The Fool often represents idealism or innocence; it does not mean a fool in the traditional sense. Similarly, the hanged man generally represents a period of limbo in one's life, a period of waiting or feeling stuck or out of control.)

The Guidebook that comes with the cards is very helpful and one reason I rate them so highly. The Guidebook begins with a typical introduction to tarot readings generally. It also has, rather than the traditional Celtic Cross spread, for example, Game of Thrones specific spreads, including The Red Keep, Old Gods of the North, Faith of the Seven, I Drink and I Know Things, and Spread of the Maesters. I look forward to testing these out and seeing if they are helpful. For each card, the Guidebook explains what the card represents both upright and reversed (should you choose to read reversed meanings). It also explains how each card ties into Game of Thrones, i.e. how the tower Bran was pushed out of relates to the traditional meaning of the Tower in tarot.

Pleasantly surprised...gorgeous, thoughtful deck
by Kim (5 out of 5 stars)

I am pleasantly surprised. I thought at best this would be an interesting novelty deck to add to my collection. However it is a legitimate tarot deck with an apparent large amount of thought and consideration put into it. I think it is positively beautiful with gorgeous colors and highly detailed art on the cards. The card stock is thin but has an interesting texture that mimics linen. They shuffle reasonably well and the little book that comes with it is tiny but hard covered, and very nicely done. It explains a little about the story behind the inspiration of each card along with the traditional meaning. It follows a Rider, Waite, Smith style, but may not be the best first deck for someone new to tarot. I think some of the cards might be a little confusing unless you already have a basic understanding of the meanings...Definitely an awesome second deck!

Love these, But I'm the biggest GOT geek in the universe
by Nicole E. (4 out of 5 stars)

Usually, I wait quite a while to review things on Amazon because you don't know until you've sat with the item for a while how you feel about it. That does not apply to something like tarot cards. I just got these today and I really love them. The art is beautiful. The box it came in is beautiful. I usually buy wooden card boxes to keep my decks in, but this is nice enough that I may just leave it in the box it came with even though it's made of cardboard. Quite a number of the images chosen for the cards are dead on. It may be the only tarot deck I've ever owned where the little book that comes with it is a hard cover. I see only one failing - for some reason, there were numerous characters from the show who were not depicted. In this deck, the Strength card is represented by Brienne of Tarth. This for me removes utterly the sexual, passionate, lustful quality of that card, and I think that Daenerys or Tyrion should have been on it. Jon Snow is the Emperor. I suppose we can all understand why. It's not completely off-base, but I would've chosen Tywin Lannister, who is one of the characters unrepresented in this deck. Sam is on the Temperance card. While I can certainly see it, I think this would've been a good place to put Margaery. She is also unrepresented in this deck. The Tower is represented by Summer looking up at the tower window, afraid because he senses Brandon is in danger. I would've put Baelish on this card instead of on the Magician where they put him, though again, I understand the choice. There is no card on which Catelyn Stark, or Joffrey appear. That would probably be the negative - all of the characters that could have been interpreted and weren't. But, if you were a big fan of the show like I am, you will find it extremely helpful, I believe, in becoming energetically aligned with the deck that these characters you know so well are on the cards, and while you might've chosen to place some of them in other places, the choices made are at least understandable. I haven't made a purchase of something that I purely enjoy this much in a long time. I have no regrets.

Great for Tarot and GoT enthusiasts alike!
by Becca J (5 out of 5 stars)

I was very excited to get this deck as a tarot reader as well as a Game of Thrones fan. I was not disappointed.

The deck is packaged in a hinged box. The cards are normal size for tarot cards (larger and longer than playing cards, but not oversized like oracle decks) and though the card stock appears thin, it is the same texture and durability as a good set of playing cards. I riffle shuffle my decks because I feel it helps clear the energy and resets it for the next question, and this deck I feel will have no problems with that.

The artwork is well done if stylized (i.e. some may like it, some may not, but it is well rendered). More importantly, it matches the meanings SO very well to traditional Rider-Waite. This would, I feel, be a great deck for someone just picking up tarot who is a Game of Thrones enthusiast because they did an excellent job of capturing moments that really express the meaning well. So many times as I flipped through I had to grin because of how well it fit.

Still unsure? The guidebook may look small, but has a wealth of imformation. It will tell you what the scene/character from the show on that card is and then give the overview, upright, and reversed meanings. There are a few GoT themed spreads included, some which tarot readers may be familiar with and others that seemed new to me.

All in all I am extremely pleased with this purchase and can't wait to start using it!
