Must have for Trek fans!

I have been looking forward to this book ever since I heard the interview with author Dayton Ward about it on Trek.fm's Literary Trek podcast. I opened the package and read it right away. To be clear I have not finished the book just yet but I felt compelled to leave it a review before I continue.

The book itself is incredibly well done. It's amazingly creative in that the book made Vulcan felt like a real place that I would actually want to visit. Both the artwork and the writing is simply wonderful. I highly recommend this book to all Trek fans.

I hope they produce more of these types of books, perhaps a travel guide to Ferenginar? I can imagine how fun that book could be.

Enjoyable and Entertaining Travel Guide for Vulcan
by Frank L. Urbano,Top Contributor: Star Trek (4 out of 5 stars)

This is a very interesting and entertaining book which provides travel guidance to Vulcan. It's really well done with sections on all the major locales on Vulcan (at least as far as the author is concerned, since I am not familiar with many of these places from the series). Just like any travel book, it has sections on attractions, dining, nightlife, and lodging.

Why only 4 stars? Well, first of all, the entire book seems a bit contrived and there are times when it appears like the author is creating locales and attractions for the sake of doing so. Second, there is a section with some vocabulary (Vulcan: A Language Primer) which covers some words in the Vulcan language - the problem is, the author defines things like lirpa and ahn-woon, which were obviously taken from 'Amok Time', but in practice are probably words which are very rarely used in the Vulcan language. In this case, it seems like the only reason the author did a section on the language is to showcase words that were used on the series, but these words may not have been as common as others, so, just like I said earlier, this makes the book seen contrived.

Third, the author makes the Vulcan people sound somewhat like 'party animals' by listing a number of different night-life establishments. I wonder if in reality (assuming this was a real book on a real planet), if Vulcan would really be this animated with this much night-life, given their nature as being unemotional. I guess this doesn't eliminate the possibility of fun locales, but for as common as they are in the book, it would seem that they are all over the place, which they probably are not.

OK, I am just nit-picking here. The book was fun to read and has a lot of interesting things in it. It's great for any fan of Star Trek, so if you are one, go ahead and get it!

The Logical Travel Choice!

OMG! This book is the sehlat's fangs! I was just on Vulcan for an Intergalactic hair show and this timely tome made my trip the best ever! I've been to Vulcan numerous times but never have I had this smooth a trip. The book is packed with useful info for both the novice and the seasoned traveler.

Author Dayton Ward approaches the subject with both reverence and a touch of fun. It's a journey you won't want to miss, whether you fly there through time and space or simply explore from the comfort of your own couch.

1) The shipping was fast, only taking one to two weeks to arrive.
2) Actual canon information from TOS used.
3) Set up as if Vulcan was real (though I think it would have been even better if they'd been more inclusive of species, as I believe Vulcans would be, just to give it even more or a real feel, you know?)
4) The artwork is stunning. Now, I know a lot of artists, so I'm actually really picky about artwork, and yet these pictures had me staring at them, sometimes even delaying reading the book just to look over the pictures. These artists have an eye for detail!
5) The book was in perfect condition when I got it.

Overall, I'm happy with my purchase.

Going on a trip to Vulcan, pick up a travel guide.

I really liked this travel guide. It let's the reader/fan in on one of the most loved species in the Trekiverse, Vulcans.

I docked a star for a couple things:
1. Sometimes the author seemed a little too flippant when describing certain aspects of Vulcan culture.
2. I would have liked to see a map of the entire planet to put the areas of Vulcan in context. ie near poles or equator, how close to Shi'Kahr

It's a good travel guide for the planet Vulcan, and I recommend it.

Good But Not Great Book About Vulcan
by R. Cushman,Top Contributor: Magic: The Gathering (4 out of 5 stars)
February 6, 2017

A bit repetitive and some of the art work could be better especially the maps but over all a good book with some good humor and a few somewhat inside jokes. As a book about the planet Vulcan it should have had information about the planet itself such as size, gravity, water coverage, major resources, population size and makeup, major industries, and many others.

An amazing read for fans. Very instructional-as a Vulcan travel guide would be. Many details were included that watchers of the original series will love. Overall, a great read. I plan on continuing these Travel Guides.

Nicely done book. I took it to my local big box store and had it spiral bound (it should have come that way IMHO). The employees said they were reading it and thought about telling me it was missing (laughingly). They were so impressed they said they were gonna get it too! Goes well in my Star Trek bath room!

Another awesome in-universe piece of lore and backstory

Just like the Klingon guide to Qo'noS, this one paints a fantastic picture of the life and activities on Vulcan for tourists and natives alike. Really fun, immersive read.

detailed, yet very funny guide

Great book for Star Trek fans, especially fans of the Vulcans. It contains a lot of information, but with sections like "Dealing with an Unexpected or Unwanted Katra" and "So You Want to Purge All of Your Emotions," it will be fun read.
