Product Description

This is the big one, True Believers! The mostly true tale of Stan Lee: a Giant-Size extravaganza, nearly ten years in the making, about the one and only Godfather of Comics. From his childhood in Depression-era New York, to transforming Marvel into the number one comics publisher in the world, to his 21st-century reinvention as Chief Creative Officer of global entertainment company POW! Entertainment, Stan “the Man” Lee stands the test of time as the most legendary name in comicbook history.

Stanley Lieber began working at Timely Comics in 1940 at the age of 17 and found himself at the helm of the bullpen as its top editor just two years later. But it wasn’t until 1961 that he ignited a revolution known as the “Marvel Age of Comics.” With a legendary stable of art partners including Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, John Romita, and Jim Steranko, Lee unleashed a dizzying cascade of seminal comicbook creations―the Fantastic Four, Hulk, Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, the X-Men, and the Avengers to name a few. After moving to Hollywood in 1980, he did it again, developing TV and film projects that laid the groundwork for the “Marvel movie.” Stan’s constant cameo presence in these billion-dollar worldwide events is a testament to his influence. As the man behind POW! Entertainment, he became a master of all media―working with rock stars and professional sports leagues, movie mavens and reality TV shows―reinforcing his creative stature the world over.First published as a signed Collector’s Edition and sold out within a week, the book was written and edited with Lee himself. His tale is told by his successor at Marvel, renowned comics writer, editor, and historian Roy Thomas, who brings “you are there” insights and wide-eyed clarity to key moments of Lee’s journey to pop culture immortality. Featuring hundreds of treasures of comicbook art, intimate photographs sourced straight from his family archives, a foreword written by Lee himself, a novel-length essay and new epilogue by Thomas, and an appendix with complete reprints of Stan’s comics from throughout the decades, this is a titanic tribute worthy of the Man.First published as a signed Collector’s Edition, now available as an unlimited XXL edition.

HUGE! I love this book.

What a fitting tribute to Stan Lee. This book is bigger than life, just like the man. This book is GIGANTIC. This isn't a criticism but you will have a logistical conundrum figuring out how to comfortably read it. I've chosen the bed approach. Sit cross legged with your back supported or against the back board. Prop this monster book on pillows and or blankets to hold it. Enjoy. The photos are glorious and the story of Stan's life is interesting and enjoyable to learn about. What a fitting monument to this wonderful man. I especially enjoyed his forward and he seemed to really be thrilled with the book and how large it was going to be. I have worked in the printing industry for the last 25 years and know that the quality of this is second to none. From the die cutting of the dust cover to the supported blacks and colors of the litho printing to the stitching of this perfect bound book. Excelsior.

Fun to read, but my goodness the SIZE! Not something you can read on your lap. How could Roy Thomas not do a good job writing about his long-time comics companion!

THIS IS A VERY IMPRESSIVE BOOK, but

The author truly knows his subject and shares the "Story" very well. A good read. The book is well illustrated but -- like many Taschen books -- it is very heavy, and I'm not talking about the subject. With the small type and large size, it is a bit of work to read. That's why it gets four stars instead of five.

What a magnificent work of art. Yes, a very large book but it had to be. After all it is all about a true legend. Filled with wonderful photos, comic pages, story boards, and inside information about a man who changed and influenced so many lives. If you are a fan of comic books, Marvel, DC, it doesn't matter, please do yourself a favor and get this book. You will not be disappointed. Excelsior, Stan Lee!! You will never be forgotten.

The book Stan Lee specifically wanted Roy Thomas to write!
by Stretch Hulk (5 out of 5 stars)

While there are many books on Stan Lee's life, this was the book Stan SPECIFICALLY wanted Roy Thomas to write -- and nobody else! Why? Because Roy is the one TRUE master of the medium when it comes to comic history, so except no substitutes. While this book tells Stan's Marvelous history (see what I did there?), it reads more like a celebration of his life. The pictures and graphics are museum-like quality, and it's freaking Roy Thomas! Stan's protege and one of the greatest writer/creators in the history of comics! NUFF SAID!!!
