Radioactive Uranium Ore | ||||||||

Product Description
Radioactive Ore Specimen.
The ore sample is Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM). Uranium Ore samples are useful as check sources for testing Geiger Counters.
No chemical or spectral analysis is performed on the radioactive ore sample. So the source of the ore's radioactivity is not determined and may be any of, or any number of radioactive elements such as uranium, thorium and potassium and any of their decay products such as radium and radon.
Counts Per Minute (CPM) activity rate listed on the label is the activity level that includes all radiation types: alpha, beta and gamma.
Since alpha radiation is the main form of radioactivity given off by the ore sample, not being able to detect alpha radiation will yield a much lower Counts Per Minute (CPM). Inexpensive Geiger counters can not detect alpha radiation.
When checking with an alpha sensitive Geiger counter it is important to set the Geiger counter to its CPM mode and to locate the hot spot on the ore sample.
Each ore sample is checked and measured for its radioactivity using an NRC certified Digital Geiger counter that has passed ANSI-STD N323A calibration using a NIST traceable source from an independent government licensed lab conforming to NRC regulations 10-CFR-34, 10-CFR-35, making the Geiger counter suitable for regulatory inspections.
License exempt. Radioactive ore sample size and CPM activity will vary. Shipped in labeled metal container as shown.
Shipping Information: We are always in compliance with Section 13 from part 40 of the NRC Nuclear Regulatory Commission rules and regulations and Postal Service regulations specified in 49 CFR 173.421 for activity limits of low level radioactive materials. The item is shipped in accordance with Postal Service activity limits specified in Publication 52. Radioactive minerals are for educational and scientific use only.

Great for making things glow...I can see my organs now if I pull the sheets over my head
Great for a science fair project...really...no joke! Yes, we did it.

Yes, we really bought this. We built a cloud chamber for a 6th or 7th grade school science fair and were looking for things to test. I wanted to find some uranium glass, but that was harder to find, expensive, and the delivery times were all too late. We also opened up a smoke detector to find the americium (we didn't break it out of its casing). Sure enough, we were able to see the tracks in the cloud chamber, which was pretty cool. We did NOT bring the ore to school!!! but we did bring the little tin. If you're looking for an impressive and cool, but really easy, science fair project, go with a cloud chamber. They are easy to build and they work. If this freaks you out, find some uranium glass (also called vaseline glass). If you do the project right, and make the kid do some serious research, it is also a great learning experience. As for safety concerns, the ore comes in the tin and in a tiny zipper bag inside that. We never opened the zipper bag, since it is the dust you might breathe in that is probably the biggest issue.
Excellent sample

Just received it, labeled at over 2000 cpm and my measurement of microsieverts/hr is consistent with this. very good.
PS I have a doctorate in exp nuclear physics but haven't been active in it for a few decades. It brought back nice memories:-)

I got a free cat in the box with this purchase but I'm not sure if I should open it to see if the cat is ok.

I left this product next to my pet lizard, unfortunately now he's 350ft tall now and is currently destroying Tokyo, Japan.

Relabeled it liverwurst and left it in the break room fridge. Of course it was gone the next day. Turned of the lights in our office and as expected, Peter from accounting was the only one glowing in the dark. No wonder he never brought lunch to work.

Awesome product better than expected!!!!

I got a beautiful sample of Uranium ore and when tested on my personal Geiger-Muller counter it was right on with the advertised CPM certification. The sample I got was over 2000 CPM and over 7 uSv/h so no doubt it is radioactive but still safe to handle when common sense practices are observed. Very happy with purchase. The Ore itself is a beautiful mineral with many colors and a beautiful crystalline shine
Better quantity of radioacitve decay products than normal backgound decay.

Provides alpha and beta decay and most likely gamma decay products but didn't have lead shielding to suggest gamma ray products.
Good documentation and safety information
