The grill worked great at first when I laid it on top of ...

This grill lasted a few hours. This past weekend, I went camping in Orlando. The grill worked great at first when I laid it on top of my camp fire and used a light weight cooking pot on top of it. The weight of the pot and its food content were distributed evenly along the metal grate of this grill. There were no signs of bending or warping. Fast forward 8 hours later, the threads of the four corner support pieces were either coming off or failing. I have no idea but they were just not holding. Some of the metal grate sticks were lightly warped, except one piece near the center; It bent into a parabola. What happened? I have no idea but it was perfectly curved. I am going to make a guess that the metal material is just cheap. I am giving this product 1 stars because it just didn't last after one use. I had to throw it away because it was just not salvageable. I want to be fair with this review but I just lost out on $25.

Pros: In an emergency situation, you could use this to cook a meal or use it as a weapon to defend yourself. It has a nice weight to it. There are two sticks that have hooked ends that you could use as a back up holdown spike for your tent.

Cons: If you are backpacking and are one of those lightweight fanatics, this thing is a little heavy. I had to sacrifice a lot of things in my luggage because I was exceeding the 40 lb weight limit with my check-in bag.

Grilled 4 Filets Perfectly, Deep in Mill Creek Canyon
by Keith H (5 out of 5 stars)

Often do overnight "luxury" hikes where we take nothing but real food and many comforts from home, and grilling Filet Mignon has become a standard. Nice to mix it up from those long treks where you have nothing but dehydrated for days on end. But packing a small Weber grill has proven unruly, so grabbed this unit. A little heavy, but fine for overnight hikes where extra pounds don't really add up. Easily fits anywhere inside or out of your pack. Even works well for steaming tortillas over your JetBoil pot for mad breakfast burritos the next morning.

Quality can be suspect from unit to unit. Carefully test your unit before use.

Pros: Collapses and stores into itself. The stored items end up in a Stainless Steel Tube that is roughly the same size and length as the cardboard tube out of a standard size of paper towels (the stainless tube would easily fit inside the same cardboard paper towel tube I just referenced). Cooking rack size is sufficient for one to two people. Easy to store. Easy to use. Cooks well with a coal only fire. Best use is to grill burgers, hot dogs, sausages or shish-ke-bab style ingredients.

Cons: The first unit I received one of the threaded legs was machined poorly. I measured the threaded portion of the troublesome leg and it was .007" smaller than the other three. This may not seem like much but it left minimal surface area for the threads to engage and that one leg ended up being "wobbly" and finally stripped out the second time I assembled the unit. I returned it to Amazon for a replacement. Not easy to assemble. I had to experiment with a number of different methods to find an acceptable process to put the unit together reliably and efficiently. Heavy. The tube and components weigh at least 1.5 lbs. Does not work well at high heat temperatures. If you build a roaring fire and place this unit in the center and then place a heavy pot of water on the grill to heat don't expect it to hold up. The thin stainless steel grill rods will collapse under heavy heating when combined with a heavy weight.

Update: I received a replacement grill promptly from Amazon. And when I assembled it I discovered the exact same problem. One of the legs had poor threading and it immediately stripped out and was useless. Since I had not shipped the first unit back to Amazon yet, I was able to mix and match 4 good legs out of the 8 I had in hand and finally was able to put together a sturdy grill. I returned the two bad legs back to amazon with the first grill. If this breaks or warps like the others have warned I am done with this grill. Probably won't purchase again.

Good idea - poor execution
by Rick (3 out of 5 stars)

I have been doing some experimentation with this grill and found that the idea is great, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. As others have said, the quality control process is hit or miss. There is one serious flaw, in my opinion, and the reason I cannot recommend it. The ports that the legs thread into are lined up perfectly with the grate rods. This means that when installing the leg on the smaller tube you cannot tighten the leg very well or you risk bending the rods. The leg holes need to be offset by a little so they do not interfere with anything. I tried to take a photo to show the issue. If that problem were resolved and the milling were more precise (none of the legs seem to be at the same angle; also shown in photo) I would then give it a great recommendation. I'll keep using it until it fails. If that's only a short period of time, I'll return it.

Awesome
by Clay (5 out of 5 stars)

This thing rocks. It is more than likely too heavy for any long hiking or backpacking trips, but I use it mainly for one night camping trips with my friends. Perfect to grill a steak and can big enough to hold 2 medium sized steaks or 1 larger porterhouse. Grill is heavy and can be a pain to clean, but if you use steel wool, it cleans up pretty well. The grill folded up is very compact and I can easily fit it in my backpack's water bottle holder. It's heavier than it seems, but this is why I only recommend taking it on short trips.

The grill can be a little finicky to set up the first few times, but you get used to it. Also, the grill bars going across can bend, but they don't bend much and are pretty easily bent back.

This is really the only fairly priced compact grill solution that I have found and it comes in handy when you want to cook something over the fire. Great product!

Held Up Well Over My Open Fire
by randoman73 (4 out of 5 stars)
December 17, 2012

I just used this grill for the first time on a backpacking trip. I did not have any trouble with warping like some others seemed to have. I just put the grill at the edge of the fire pit and scooted some coals underneath it. The cooking surface handled our two 1-quart pots and some summer sausage wrapped in foil well. I had no concerns about stability during use.

The weight is not ideal for backpacking, but aluminum or titanium just would not hold up to the heat as well. I did set it it up one time before hand, which definitely saved me a little time at the campsite.

I will use this again, unless I need to go ultralight.

Quality control
by Marion (3 out of 5 stars)

Product is good but one issue. Quality control. I received my item with a slight damage to the product. I have attached a photo of the damage. This should never have had passed through quality control. Unfortunately, when these things happen, it reflects badly on the company. Their product may be good but are they taking shortcuts to make their products?

Description of damage, one of the rods is bent and has crimps on the sides. It's still usable but cosmetic damage pretty ugly.

Awesome grill while on the trail!
by Ben Swink (5 out of 5 stars)

I added this to my pack last week for a three day family hike. I wanted to treat the kids to grilling fish fillets rather than skewering as we've done before. It is a great product when used with care. Thanks to earlier reviews I knew to: 1-assemble the grill while the fire was getting started because it takes a few minutes, 2-set it NEXT to the campfire and scoop just enough embers/wood to grill with, 3-evenly place fish fillets (or hot dogs) around the edges and use the center for toasting bread, and 4-place small pot on the corner (stronger point) nearest campfire for boiling water. It does take a bit of effort but my family loved having a grill on the trail. My hiking buddies agreed and can't wait to order theirs. Thanks for a great product and thanks for the educational reviews!

Cool idea, but could be better
by $ebastian (2 out of 5 stars)

I love the idea of this grill, but it has a serious flaw. The legs are only about 6 inches long. Way too short, even with a 2 stage fire. First time I used it the cross bars all got too hot and bent. Even though the bars were bent, I was still able to pack them up easily and seems like I'll be able to use it again, but then again, I'm not 100% on that. If you're going to use this, I highly reccomend building arranging some rocks or something in your fire to set the legs on to prop up the grill to where you can at least place a small log under it.

I guess the "proper" way to use the grill would be to actually push the legs into the ground and try to rake hot coals under it. But if it's just a wood campfire you are working with, that can be a little difficult.
