Mixed Feelings
by Atma Weapon (3 out of 5 stars)
December 14, 2013

Background. I've always hated dealing with cat boxes and have gone through several normal ones (that I would rate as one star) and one special 'automatic' box, the one where you roll it over on the side (that I would rate as two stars). So, I've never really been satisfied, but then I saw this model, and it made me curious because it uses the blue crystals and I had never tried a rake system before. I'll go through my impressions chronologically, then I'll go over the specifics, and finally I'll present my analysis and reason for my score.
1st Week Impressions. The cat is reluctant to use it at first, but eventually does. The unit is very large and the rake keeps the crystals very evenly spread. I'm happy. This may be the solution I've always needed. There isn't much spillage outside the box, which is positive, and it's easy to see the blue crystals that do spill making it easier to clean them up.
1st Month Impressions. Doesn't last 30 days. On Day 14 had a *very* foul odor when I was stirring it up. Then, the replacement cartridges doubled in price on me, throwing off my calculations as to how affordable this would be in the long run. Plus, I'm thinking it needs to be replaced at least every 20 days in reality based on that odor at Day 14. I'm upset that it's going to cost me three times as much as I thought it would. The box is so large it's hard to fit in a plastic garbage bag and there's nothing to keep the lid closed so it spills out when doing the transfer. I end up using a second garbage bag to be sure. I also get the privacy hood partly for my cat and partly to see if it cuts down on the litter that spills out of the box or cuts down on odor.
2nd Month Impressions. OK, maybe it wasn't as bad as I thought. This is very hassle-free. The foul odor is only a problem if I stir up the crystals to examine the bottom of the tray. If I just don't do that, there's no odor problem. The duration may be fine then since it's a matter of how fast the front bin fills up, not how bad the odor gets. So, I'm thinking 30 days again. I did notice in the first month that some white fungus or something was growing on the poop when I pulled back the bin to look at it. I'm not sure if this is a problem or not. I don't want spores to affect the air quality in my house. In fairness to the unit, it may have been the air quality in my house that caused the fungal growth in the first place: I have mushrooms outside my house frequently. I'd like to run my air filter when I change the litter next time to start from a blank slate. The privacy hood is a bust. I don't know why, but my cat actually throws out more crystals with the hood on vs. off. It's thrown in a straight line, yes, but it's a lot more crystals. I don't think there's any noticeable difference with the odor with it on or off. Mostly I've learned not to stir the crystals and so far I haven't had that really foul odor again. I can get a whiff of something kind of bad which I think is the poop but that's also another issue where if I keep my distance, it's not a problem. I do kind of wish the partition more fully closed off the poop bin. It's not completely sealed off from the open air. I'm noticing some poop is baked on the rake, something I've read other people say happens sometimes. I'm not sure if that will become a problem or not, but so far I'm willing to overlook it.

Specifics

Size/Shape. This is much bigger than I imagined. I guess that's good for the cat and may be good for keeping litter inside. There is a drawback, though, which is that the cartridges (the box you dispose of) are also very large. If you've ever tried to put a large pizza box in a plastic garbage bag, you know how annoying that can be. This disposal box is even bigger than a large pizza box. Mostly the problem is that it's very long, making it hard to pull the garbage bag closed around it. I wish it could have been a few inches shorter.

Operation. The unit works fine and makes about as much noise as you'd expect (which fascinates the cat, by the way). The rake pushes the poop to a front compartment and when it gets near, the purple bit lifts up a cardboard separator (it's attached with magnets) and allows the poop to come in. The weird thing is that the separator doesn't seem to close 100%. It's one of those 'close enough' things. I suppose that's fine but it makes me wonder about air quality (maybe it helps the poop to dry out but it also means the odor particles can travel freely back and forth). I would not recommend the fancier version (ultra) that goes off after only five minutes because even with this version (normal), my cat's poop has gotten baked on to the rake in a few places. My cat's diet is dry food and treats.

Replacing Cartridges. The main box is so big and bulky that it's not a trivial matter to lift it up to get the cartridge out. The commercials show it looking easier than it is. I'm a bit surprised there is no better way to do this. It's a minor nit to pick, but anything that's 'automatic' should know those sorts of touches are important to the consumers of 'automatic' stuff.

Crystals. I'm undecided on this whole concept still. The crystals do soak up moisture fairly well, but I can still see yellowish coloration sometimes. Also, as previously mentioned, be careful stirring up the crystals. I did it out of curiosity and what I found was that as the crystals absorb moisture, they become smaller and end up sifting to the bottom of the tray. However, when you stir it up and expose the bottom of the tray, you also aggravate a lot of the urine odor which isn't 100% absorbed/locked in, just 95% absorbed. The 5% was really foul, though, and made me almost retch. In a way, though, it's clever to let the urine filter down into crystals while only raking the poop forward. The problem with clumping litter (clay) is that it would clump and make a mess for the rake to push through. So, I can kind of accept this solution, imperfect as it is, when looking at the bigger picture.

Cat Compatibility. My cat seems to be okay with this box. I think he is hesitant to pee in it, though, and I think it's because when he gets ready to go, he claws/digs into a bit. It's possible this stirs up the odor the same way it did for me and that might signal to him that it's not a clean spot to go in. I'm not sure what to do about that, though. I have no way to tell him 'don't stir it up'. I may layer on extra crystals and lightly stir it up to help further bury the odorous layer but it says not to add extra crystals, so I'm not sure.

Dust. The blue crystals do cut down significantly on dust. If you have problems with dust in your house from clay based litters, then this may be of interest to you. My mom has a traditional (non-automatic) litter box for her cat, but she is a convert to the blue crystals and swears by them. All because of the dust. The dust issue has never been a big deal for me, but I can attest that the crystals have basically zero dust to worry about. The drawback is you lose the clumping aspect and maybe lose odor control to some degree. My mom has never complained about odor so I'm not sure why our experiences are so different. Anyway, if you're just looking at the dust angle, you have to score the blue crystals as the winner.

Recommendation. I think it depends on your priorities. If your priority is odor control, beware of stirring and rogue whiffs of foul odor. I've found the traditional mix of clay and crystals in a normal (non-automatic) box to be good on odor control. If your priority is hassle-free, then you're in my shoes and the key issue is then what's the lesser of all the different evils when it comes to automatic cat boxes. I had the rolling kind and found it not 'hassle-free' enough for my taste. Now, I'm trying this rake system with the blue crystals. I think it's better and I'll stick with it for a while since I've invested so much into it (the cost of the box and six months supply of the replacement cartridges). I may consider taping up the disposal box somehow instead of bagging it (or getting bigger bags) and it's still an open question how often I should clean the rake (or whether I can just keep scraping off chunks with my scoops and letting it clean itself by rubbing against the blue crystals). I can tolerate a little odor and this unit doesn't produce too much unless you mess with it. I cannot tolerate hassle, though, and this seems good on that front (with the caveats as noted). Is this the perfect solution or ultimate/best design for an automatic cat box? No, probably not. But it's the best I've found so far. Also, note that you can buy generic blue crystals and a permanent cartridge if you don't like the replacement cartridges for whatever reason. I may explore that option in the future once I run out of the cartridges.

Explanation of Score: I took off one star because the surprise price hike in the replacement cartridges and I took another star off to indicate various imperfections (such as the foul odor from stirring). I know nothing is perfect, but I hate surprises. I hope this review will help you make an informed decision whatever you end up deciding.

Update: July 2017. Originally purchased in October 2013.

Corrections/Clarifications
1. I probably overstated the foul odor problem. I am careful not to stir it up and no longer have that problem at all.
2. The boxes do fit fine in garbage bags now that I have practiced it, it's not a problem at all.
3. My cat is totally used to it now.

Issues Not Mentioned Before
4. The blue crystals will be tracked out of the box and around the house. I've used the hood and mats and all that jazz but in the end some crystals will inevitably be found around the house. Since they are bright blue, they're easy to spot and clean up if you're so inclined. I got a Roomba and it works like a charm, but you may still find crystals on the stairs or other annoying places. This wasn't a big deal to me but just a friendly heads-up. Also, stepping on them barefoot is not as bad as stepping on LEGOs, but it is annoying.
5. I've gotten some comments saying that you need to clean the litter box more often than I have been. My cat hasn't gotten sick, but I don't want anyone to make their cats unhealthy based on my (bad) example. I was a horrible slob back then so for me it was better than the alternative of a regular litter box that I severely neglected. However, I've changed my ways and so I can probably afford to pay extra attention to the little box and clean it more often.
6. This unit has been a real workhorse, but recently the motor is starting to sound different and the rake struggles a little bit to make its passes. It still works, though. If it ever stops working, I'll add another update.
7. It's true that the replacement trays were originally about half the current price. However, I've noticed that it has stayed relatively stable now for a few years (about $90 for a six pack or about $45 for three pack). Also, I used to get the six packs but now that I'm living in a smaller area and have to walk a long way from the office where the mail is held, the three packs seem more practical. The six pack is moderately heavy.
8. If I could have one wish for a feature to improve the physical design, it would be to give it two handles projecting forward from the front or side of the box on each side to make lifting it up easier and more sanitary (I don't like to touch so close to the poop bin). The magnet system could also be a bit better for the same reason (not wanting to touch so close to the poop bin).

So, I mostly maintain my initial opinion on the product. There were a few points that I think, in retrospect, were blown out of proportion/easily avoidable. However, there were also the sorts of issues that you only appreciate after years of using the product, and hopefully I've filled in that gap now with the update.

No Smell, No Mess, No Fuss!
by Brooke (5 out of 5 stars)
February 22, 2017

I waited a solid 3 months before posting this review so I could get a good feel for this product. I considered buying this for a very long time and now I wish I would have done it sooner! I'm sure all cats and households are different, but this has been a lifesaver for me. I used to be able to smell the cat litter throughout the whole upstairs and there was clay litter dust ALL over the room it was in. Now, there is zero smell, zero mess and I barely have to do any work to upkeep it.

It says it can last up to 21 days, I have found that to be the max for my cat, I will probably start changing it around 18 or 19 days. Changing out the tray refill is a little nasty because that's about the only time I can smell anything bad (and it's still not THAT bad). However it is nowhere near as nasty as scooping out the litter constantly. I haven't had any malfunctions with the rake and I keep it in a dry room as directed. My cat took to it just fine, I swapped it out with the old cold turkey and there weren't any issues.

In the long run, I think the refills may be a little pricier than regular clay litter, but it is 100% worth it for me.

Love this box! No more seeing or smelling Nasty cat litter!
by Chey (5 out of 5 stars)
January 3, 2016

I love this litter box. At first I was sceptical. Especially considering how much it cost, I was worried my cats wouldn't like switching from clay clumping litter, to this silica gel crystals.

My two cats are very picky about their litter box. If it was even a little dirty they would go poop on the carpet in the living room. (The things we put up with for our pets) so I knew I had to do something. I started by buying a LitterMaid automatic litter box. I hated that one. My cats loved it. But I hated how I still had to see smell and sometimes touch nasty gross used poop or pee litter. After about 2 months of use the motor burned out. There was nothing that could be done. So I got on Amazon read the reviews of the PetSafe Scoop Free Litter Box. And I took a chance.

It got here 2 days before Amazon said it would. Which was great, because as I said our other box was broken. I set it up and plugged it in. Which only took about 5min. And about 15min later my cat Skittles, who I thought would be the most sceptical, went straight to it and took a big poop in it. I was so happy. The other cat took to it just as quickly.

The best part. It doesn't smell. And I don't have to touch nasty cat poop litter ever again! It scoops the poop into the compartment and I never have to see it. I do "stir" the litter because the urine changes the blue crystals so green, and so you can see if your cats go in the same spot over and over. I mix in the clean blue litter and the used green so the litter can absorbe as much as it can. With my two girls one litter cartridge lasts about 20 days, and there is no smell. I just change it when it starts looking ugly. Honesty it could probably last 5 more days but I like the clean blue litter look.

The crystals don't spread around the house like other litter boxes. The only downside is the litter cartridges are a little on the expensive side. But to me the extra cost is worth never having to see or touch nasty litter. It takes about 2min to change the litter. I love this box. And I recommend it to anyone who hates litter, but loves their kitties and wants them to be happy and healthy.

SOOOO much better than littermaid and worth every penny
by Christopher Chapman (5 out of 5 stars)
August 22, 2018

If you are looking for an affordable, low maintenance litter box look no further. About a year ago I purchased the littermaid for multi cat households (we have 2 cats). About a month after a friend was moving and gave me a scoopfree. The difference in upkeep is unbelievable. After a year of using both I decided to purchase another scoopfree and retire the littermaid. I agonized over which to buy in the first place, so if you are like me (indecisive) let me break it down for you:
1. The scoopfree uses crystal litter which seriously helps with odor control. The littermaid depends on what kind of litter you use, but I've only used high quality litter and could still smell the ammonia.
2. The scoopfree is legit scoop free. You simply take the box out of the bottom and toss it. Seriously, its that easy. It takes 30 seconds to have a completely clean, fresh box. (Even my husband can manage it)
3. I have noticed that the crystal litter seems to track less than traditional clumping litter. My house is all tile so its super noticeable if any of the litter has migrated.
4. Clumps of waste always stuck to the rake on the littermaid. Because the scoopfree uses crystal litter, this isn't an issue.
5. The waste bin on the littermaid was very small. It needed to be changed every couple of days. If your home has more than 2 cats, I would imagine it would need to be emptied at least daily. IMO that defeats the point of having an automatic litter box. I only have to change the scoopfree maybe once a month.
6. The scoopfree is much quieter. If your litter boxes are near your bedroom or where you watch TV this is a huge bonus.
7. If the power goes out and comes back on, the scoopfree will turn back on automatically. The littermaid has to be manually turned on again. This may not seem like much but you will sure notice if the power goes out while you are at work and don't realize it needs to be turned back on.
8. Crystal litter is available in white, so if you want to be able to evaluate the color of your cat's waste, this is an option.

Cons:

The crystal litter is a bit more expensive so the upkeep is a bit more costly. For me, its totally worth it (full time work + full time school)

My cats don't mind the crystal litter but I have heard that some cats may not take well to it. Before investing in a scoopfree, it may be worth it to buy a small bag of crystal litter to test out first. If you integrate it into their current litter and switch them over in increments it shouldn't be an issue.

I know this review was super long, but I hope it was helpful. This litter box is seriously worth every cent!!

This thing is amazing!

I also purchased the rug, and cover separately. I didn't put the cover on right away so that I could easily place my cat in the box as she got use to it. It only took a couple of hours and 3 times placing her in it for her to use it. But I also moved the litter box location since it was bigger then our last one, so that was confusing her too. But I felt like she adapted quickly. This thing is awesome! Our cat was part of a larger family of cats when we adopted her. She never learned out to cover her mess, because the other cats did it for her. She would just scratch the plastic sides of the litter box like a doofus not doing. Thing to cover the poop or smell. Now that I'm working full time I would come home to a smelly house from cat poop that marinated all day. With this little box it scoops 20 minutes after she goes, no smell to linger. If we are home and notice she goes we can push the button for it to scoop immediately. WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!

Cuts out the smell and daily maintenance. Also, It's quite large.

For a single cat family, this is a godsend. I no longer have to scoop everyday, instead cleaning once every 3 weeks. I use the Forever Tray with the Scoop Free and it's wonderful as well. I do wish that I had spent a little bit more money and gotten the hooded version, though, as the cat does kick some litter out. The smell in our house has improved 100%. The ScoopFree is on the large size. Make sure you have enough space ahead of time. Much larger than our original litter box. Added some of the old cat litter to help make the transition smoother.

How to solve the "crappy" rake problem
by Paul Schmidt (5 out of 5 stars)
April 14, 2017

Great product, but the rake will rust and get crappy (literally!), no matter what some other reviewers say. I recently bought another new one because of that and was determined to fix the issue. Even worse, if your cat does not properly cover their poop, it will stick to the rake and not go into the storage area and you will have to scrape it off. I have come up with a solution that works well for me. Cut down some plastic drinking straws to size, then split them lengthwise with a scissors. Put them around the tines of the rake (photo shows partial completion). You could also put them around the bottom of each tine if you wanted to. Keeps the rake clean, poop doesn't stick (at least so far, two months). And you can easily replace the straws if needed.

Waste of money and not efficient!!!
by Rachel Pop (1 out of 5 stars)
May 1, 2017

Do not use if you have more than one cat. I have 2 cats and have to change the litter every week, which is crazy expensive! As soon as they pee in it the litter is immediately ruined! The machine just spreads the wet litter around and they hate having to use it again! The picture I added is the litter only after 3 days of use. The litter should be dry and blue but it turns yellow and completely absorbs the pee and it doesn't clump, causing it to be spread all throughout the litter box. My cats are refusing to use the litter box after a few days of changing the crystals. I am beyond furious with this product!!!!

Definitely Recommend! Holding Up Well!
by Steph (5 out of 5 stars)
January 3, 2017

Pros:
-Easy to remove purple top and scoop waste
-Handy button that will rake if there's a foul smelling waste and you can't wait 20 minutes for the auto-rake.
-Maintenance is minimal I scoop out waste once a week for two 11 pound cats and change litter once a month.
(Used to scoop 2x a day and replace my old clay litter weekly)
-Uses crystal litter which is so much better than clay (no dust, no litter smell)
-Rake is easy to clean if your cat decides to go on the rake and it sticks

Cons:
-Pushes litter into waste tray so you need to add new litter more than necessary
-The disposable litter trays are crap get a permanent tray and save yourself time $$$
(I use the LitterWorks® Permanent Scoopfree® Compatible Litter Tray Heavy duty)
-Will not work for cats who have frequent diarrhea it'll just cling to the rake
-ScoopFree crystal litter is over priced.
(7/8/17 Update: Ive found ExquisiCat® Micro Crystals Cat Litter from Pet Smart to be the best. It has the texture of sand not small pebbles like scoop fresh. Plus it's cheaper than Fresh Step from Walmart that has that pebble texture. Pet Smart also gives 10% off the already cheaper price just for in store pick up)
*I also use Merry Products Cat Washroom Bench to house my litter. It helps hide it, keep odors in, and prevents my cats from throwing litter every where.

Picked up this box about a day ago 1/2/17. Love it so far!! I read a few reviews about peoples cats hating the crystal litter. Luckily my cats took to it instantly. I'll definitely be getting a permanent litter bottom because I'm not paying 50$ for 3 disposable ones. I have two cats and plan for this to last at max 2 weeks. I wouldn't use if your cat has frequent diarrhea as it'll clump in the rake. Also the magnets seem weak and occasionally fall from the metal on the litter pan. I bought 5$ nickel magnets with holes in the middle so I could screw them in to place and that fixed the problem.(I've discovered the original magnets aren't weak just the metal on the scoop free disposable litter trays are crap. When I updated to my permanent litter box I stopped having any falling issues)
***I will update with how it lasts long run and what permanent litter tray I've purchased.
2/27/17 Update:

This litter box is holding up well! The not having to scope it for a full two weeks is definitely a stretch. Before I bought the LitterWorks® Permanent Scoopfree® Compatible Litter Tray (Heavy duty) I had to scoop their poops out once maybe twice a week. The rake also has a tendency to push the litter into the waste trap. With the permanent tray I have the same two issues however since the lid is not connected to the box it makes this step so much easier. I can just remove the purple lid and scoop out my two cats waste. The ScoopFree disposable trays connect to the disposable box so when you needed to scoop you'd have to remove the purple lid, lift the litter itself(the two white hooks prevent you from just lifting the cardboard flap where the magnets attached), and then lift the cardboard flap to scoop. My new routine is to scoop out their waste, spread the litter around, and add more crystals if necessary once a week. You can use any crystal litter as long as its none clumping. I fully dump and replace the crystals once a month. Once a month is great considering I have two 11 pound cats and before I was scooping twice a day and replacing all their litter weekly. The crystal litter really is so much better than clay clumping litter. There's no more litter dust(although buyer beware some crystal litters are dustier than others) and my house never smells like litter!!
1/30/18 Update:

The litter box is still alive and well! After months of trial and error the best crystal litter for my forever tray is ExquisiCat® Micro Crystals Cat Litter. It's smaller than scoop frees crystal litter and solved the rake pushing the litter problem. I buy it when it goes on sale at PetSmart and stock up. No smell no dust! Cats continue to use it and no issues with the box or permanent tray!

Great UNLESS You Have an Older Cat...
by SueChef (3 out of 5 stars)
September 8, 2016

SEE UPDATE BELOW!

Bought this after much review and thought to replace our 8-year-old automatic LitterMaid brand litter box, which worked like a charm right to the end. When it started groaning and grinding, we knew it was on its last legs and decided to replace it, but the negative reviews about the newer version of that product prevented us from purchasing it again. Instead, we opted for this model made by ScoopFree, a different brand, which works similarly but had higher reviews.

As a couple other reviewers have noted, this box does not eliminate fresh fecal odor as well as our old LitterMaid box did. The reason for the odor intensity, from what I can tell and from others have noted, is that the cardboard box does not do a good job of sealing off the fresh feces once it's dumped into the end trap, as the odor escapes from under the cardboard trap door. The LitterMaid had a plastic box that did a better job of that part of it. Also, I've heard rave reviews about the effectiveness of crystal litter for urine, but I believe it's not as effective at coating and containing feces as clumping litter.

I have tried using baking soda or a variety of kitty litter-box deodorizers in the bottom of the box before adding the crystals. That helps some, as does a well-ventilated area and adding a room deodorizer. For your reference, I installed this Glade Automatic Sprayer on the wall above the box and it spritzes Clean Linen scent every 10 minutes, which helps immensely: https://www.amazon.com/Glade-Automatic-Spray-Starter-Kit/dp/B003W93FGW/ref=sr_1_12_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1499784832&sr=8-12&keywords=glade+automatic+spray+air+freshener+clean+linen.
07/11/2017 UPDATE:

The poo odor is no longer our biggest problem BECAUSE...our 15-year-old cat has developed a peeing issue, peeing lots and constantly (yep, we're seeing the vet but it appears to be age related).

So my update is a caveat for anyone with older cats or multiple cats -- the crystals are NOT good if your litter box is used often for urine. Crystals absorb only so much pee and then it just soaking the bottom of the box and the cat refuses to enter it. I have found puddles and poo on the outside of the box when the crystals stop absorbing -- and that has happened only a few days after a complete litter change.

I tried half clumping and half crystal litter when a couple reviewers noted that worked, but it did NOT work for me. The clumping litter completely gummed up the rake and it got stuck halfway, making a mud pie out of the bottom of the box. ICK. Plus, the teeny-tiny poo receptacle does not have enough room for pee clumps (unlike the LitterMaid model, which does) and is meant to hold only small poos.

I am about to try the Forever Tray + liners + crystal litter with this unit and will need to replace litter much more often than advertised. Right now, I get about 5 days MAX out of one disposable cardboard tray of crystal litter (with ONE CAT!) -- nowhere NEAR the advertised month -- and even that requires constant attention to add more crystals each day and rake the crystals to distribute the urine-soaked areas. This is completely negating the reason I bought it -- to have a clean litter box when I am away from home and have a kitty sitter just stopping by daily. Right now, this box needs daily, if not twice daily, maintenance to keep it clean enough to appease and appeal to my kitty.

I'll update later after trying the Forever Tray. I think I'll be stuck changing crystals very often. Read that: "quite expensive and still a pain in the patootie for the convenience of not scooping daily."

Right now, my assessment is that this would have worked great for my cat up until this year when she started urinating more often. I'm frustrated that there isn't a perfect automated solution out there.
