Does the trick -- helps to color half the lace a different color at first.

This did the trick for my kids -- it could be improved with a few simple changes though --
1) it would benefit from a lace that is half one color, and half another, to help the child tell the difference between each side while manipulating the lace to make the bow -- ideally, they would include the single-color lace too, so kids can graduate to it and not become dependent upon the half and half lace. I took a permanent marker to one side of our lace, but let's just say it rubs off even though I used a major name-brand marker, so my kids' hands look like they've been wrapping a kitchen in newsprint when they're done.
2) a non-slip bottom would be helpful.

LOVE LOVE LOVE. I work with autistic children and this shoe is EVERYTHING!!! We've been working on shoe tying in steps and were finally able to see results!!! I like this shoe because its cleaner than using your everyday walking shoe to practice and is heavy enough to stay in place and work with at a table.

Kids love practicing on this shoe!

One trick I got from an online site is to lace it up, then tie it the traditional way. When you get to the part where the lace needs to travel through the hole next to the loop, tie a knot there. It ques the kids and helps them tie tighter from the start. Another suggestion is to always make sure the shoe points away from the student, as their shoe does. When they get this right, they can turn around and practice how it would be to help others. I use this for K-2nd grade special education students. Works great!

This was a super cute little gift for our niece

This was a super cute little gift for our niece. She is three and seemed to be a little young for the "learn to tie your shoes" aspect of it, but loved playing with it just as a wooden shoe toy. We took the lace out for her for the time being and she still loves playing with it. Like a lot of Melissa & Doug toys, it's refreshing to see kids love playing with things that do not need batteries and have no lights or music...

One note, it is pretty heavy/clunky. I suppose that means its well made, but I couldn't help having paranoid visions of toddler clubbing each other over the head with it... seems like it could hurt...

Great Occupational Therapy Product!

This is a cute and attractive tool to use in occupational therapy when teaching children shoe tying. I have always loved Melissa & Doug products, from toys to puzzles. They are very popular within the occupational therapy community, during intervention with adults and children. Children can easily manipulate and grip the laces. Adults are always complimenting the modern/retro style of the shoe, making it appealing for all ages. Thanks for such a great, cute, and inexpensive product! It is just what I was expecting!

Love it

I am a big fan of pretty much every toy Melissa and Doug makes, so I can't say I'm unbiased here, but I love this wooden shoe. It seems so simple, but it makes teaching all my daycare kids and my own 5 year old shoe tying so much easier, plus I don't have to put a gross shoe on my table. The only thing that would make it better is if it were more weighted to hold it on the table while they are pulling on the laces but that's minor.

Helpful.
by Mileage May Vary (4 out of 5 stars)

This is a fair model for demonstrating tying shoes. What I don't like is that the holes are arranged vertically on the sides, and it is not intuitive that the outside of the holes correspond to the top of the shoe and the inside of the holes represent the bottom of the eyelet. The wood doesn't stretch of course like a real shoe. The price is reasonable though.

Amazing

I have no idea why this product gets so many bad reviews. If you feel like you want something more then just use a regular shoe at home. I have no complaints. My daughter got the hang of it immediately. We also used a very helpful video on YouTube not the instructions it came with. Sometimes kids need video visuals.

WE DID IT!

My 10 year old nephew has severe ADHD and a learning disability. After years and years of trying to get him to understand how to tie his shoes and years and years of yelling, tears, crying and frustration, we were about to give up, but I saw this and decided to give it a try. Within 5 minutes of unboxing, he was tying his laces. Now we had yelling, crying and tears of joy. We will be passing this toy along to his autistic brother when it's time for him to learn to tie HIS shoes.
