Does not fit Tacoma 2018. HitchSafe requires you to buy longer bolts for an extra $13. Here is a thought for the company allow the customer to choose their truck model and you include the right bolts.

I recommend fastening a leash on the rubber cover
by Etienne (4 out of 5 stars)
August 23, 2017

This is the second safe unit I have purchased...the first one worked gtreat... I live in a dryer climate in NORCAL. Not really rust that would deteriorate or ruin the unit. But maybe every now and then a little lube or a clean out is due.. I jeep a lot and have had it submerged in red clay water often by getting a little wild and stuck in mud...I recommend fastening a leash on the rubber cover.. a small hole with a braided wire that connects to another hole on the hitch back under the bumper so when your wheeling off-road if the cover gets knocked off it will still have a chance making it back home. I had a theft attempt in SF and the outer square plate was knocked off and attempted to bang in the roll pins.. no luck it held up. I still used it for a bit until buying a new one.. but it withheld a theft attempt. If you loose the rubber cover and people see the white numbers nad know it's a safe then your vulnerable, that's what my issue was. I also black sharpied the numbers too. Just the outside facing row...all 1,s....so people can not see the writing if you loose the rubber cover.

Surfing key locker for my Wrangler
by Adam Dude (5 out of 5 stars)
December 24, 2017

So happy I finally pulled the trigger on this and installed it on my 2015 Jeep Wrangler. I've always worried about hiding my keys in my car while I go surf. Not anymore! This is perfect if you already have a trailer hitch installed and want to lock up your keys while you're surfing, hiking, etc. especially for the Wrangler because it's so easy to break into with the soft top!

DIAL YOUR CHOSEN COMBINATION BEFORE TOUCHING THE SET SCREW
by T. White (5 out of 5 stars)

Great item/invention. No more hide-a-key boxes under the bumper. Be very careful when setting the initial combination. Make sure to DIAL YOUR CHOSEN COMBINATION BEFORE TOUCHING THE SET SCREW. You only get one shot at doing it correctly. I didn't and ended up having to disassemble the lock and manually realign the tumblers. Quite a learning experience. Can be done, but is much easier to follow the instructions.

Great concept poor construction.

I'm a huge fan of these and have used them for years without any issues. This latest one however seems to have had its share of problems. The combo numbers are always getting jammed and the release tab has broken off rendering the lock useless.

Beating a (tiny) dead horse...
by DocYinYang (4 out of 5 stars)

Others here have complained and I STILL didn't see it. If you have a newer model Tacoma or Tundra you need to buy this product AND a set of longer bolts for $9. All-in-all not a huge deal, but I'm more irritated that it wasn't an option at my initial purchase. Why can't I buy a hitch safe (which, by the way, is a totally awesome concept and these peeps have nailed it in general) which actually works for my truck without an extra purchase? Or maybe you buy back my little tiny (I'm assuming here) Ford pins so that I'm not financially punished for my sexy AF truck?

Hey HitchSafe people, perhaps a better option would be to just sell all of your kits with the bigger (and assuredly more masculine) receiver bolts and just include more of those sexy foam washers for those with less-girthy hitches. Just a really great idea you can have for free.

Check to make sure the holes in the HitchSafe match the hole in your receiver.
by Janet Myerberg (1 out of 5 stars)

I would probably like it if it fit my hitch receiver. The pin holes on the HitchSafe are a full ½" shorter than the hole in my receiver. I contacted HitchSafe and they sent me an email on how to modify it MYSELF. REALLY?! Down the drain goes the warranty if I do. I have returned it and when they get smart and make the adjustments themselves to keep the warranty I will look at it again.

A MUST HAVE | Simple and Easy To Use Smart Product
by Mark Marino (5 out of 5 stars)
July 26, 2017

I truly LOVE this product. I'd never even heard of these before, and then one day my daughter was taking surfing lessons, and her instructor had one of these on his truck. We talked, and I agreed, I HATE taking my keys down to the beach, and this is the perfect solution. But it uses are so much more comprehensive. Forget the Hide-A-Key boxes; I've lost two of those over the years, and thankfully I discovered they were gone before I had an emergency. The HitchSafe is easy to install, it's impossible for it to fail, and if you can remember a four number combination, well, it super simple to use. The box where the keys are is big enough for about three keys (I drive a Chevy Tahoe) along with the car remote and a couple of credit cards/driver's license if you want. I use it as a kind of lock box too, and keep a house key in there just in case. You will love this product! Learning curve tip: Lock up the car BEFORE you stash they keys in the HitchSafe! I missed that step a few times, but no longer. Enjoy!

Took modification to fit 2016 Toyota 4Runner
by GearJunkie (5 out of 5 stars)
October 19, 2016

I have used a HitchSafe for over 10 years on my previous 2 vehicles (2002 4Runner, 2008 4Runner). I recently bought a 2016 4Runner and my old HitchSafe wouldn't fit in the receiver. The receiver is too rounded on the edges for the "square-ness" of the HitchSafe. The old one wouldn't fit, I thought maybe the design had changed a bit over the years, and I wanted a new, shiny one anyway, so I bought a new one. It didn't fit either. I spent about 5 minutes grinding all 4 edges of the HitchSafe with a Dremmel tool and grinding wheel #8193. Now it fits perfectly! Looking forward to another 10+ years of use. I leave my spare key in it all the time in case I lock myself out. I use the safe about 3 times each week. I put my key in it when I go for a run or bike ride.

Some notes:
(1) This is not waterproof. Don't put a key that has batteries in the HitchSafe. I've never had puddles of water in the compartment, so it doesn't leak like sieve, but moisture and some water drops will get in.
(2) The rubber/plastic cover will get ripped off when you drive through a car wash. I take mine off before entering.
(3) My 10+ year-old safe worked fine and I never oiled the combo dials. They got a little gritty after a while. I probably could have sprayed a little WD40 on it to make the dials easier to turn, but it still worked fine.
(4) On some vehicles, it will stick out from the back of the car. This has to do with how far back the holes in the receiver are drilled. I'd like it better if mine went all the way in, but I can't drill new holes in the receiver, so I just deal with it.

Got a Tacoma or Tundra?
by MiamiMark (2 out of 5 stars)
March 17, 2019

The in-safe storage space is small, but this product is still very clever, easy to install, and works fine.

However, if you have a Toyota Tacoma (I have a 2019) or a Tundra, it will NOT work right out of the box, since the supplied bolts are too short.

So, you MUST buy different, longer bolts from HitchSafe (which cost about $10 and don't even come with the foam washers!). The longer bolts you need are part #HS7021T. Personally, I find it insulting that this company makes Tacoma/Tundra owners buy another part instead of just offering the longer bolts as an option (even if at a moderate, additional cost) at initial purchase. Total money grab by HitchSafe!
