Great picnic bench!
by SquallyD (5 out of 5 stars)
March 2, 2015

We purchased this bench because the reviews looked good and the bench itself was cheaper than others we were deciding on.
- Was very simple to put together - even with my 2 year old 'helping' me. I used the instructions, but it would be fairly easy without them
- I'm 6'0 190 lbs and I can sit gingerly on the edge of the bench. I wouldn't want to plop myself down on this bench or sit too long in the middle, but it is very sturdy otherwise. My wife is more petite and sits comfortably with our daughter, even on the same side.
- we've had three or four toddlers at a time sitting comfortably coloring in a large book together
- we have not primed or painted the bench; it is being used indoors now. After paint, crayons, markers, ink get all over the bench we might paint it then.
- the bench isn't heavy and can easily be moved to a different area with no trouble. However, this also means my 2 year old can move it and on our hardwood floor it will move pretty easily. I suspect outside on the lawn it will be a bit harder to move and wouldn't slide. With that said, my daughter has no problems getting on and off the bench or leaning under to pick up something that fell - the bench doesn't move that easily.

We really love the bench and folks have commented on how practical and wonderful it is. We will probably keep this one inside and purchase another for outside. I can see this lasting several years with minor cosmetic upkeep before it is too small for our daughter or the bench is beyond easy repair.

UPDATE 7/12/2017

Over two years later the bench is still being used (indoors) daily and often. It has paint spots, pencil and marker lines, play-doh in the cracks and stains from fruit and food, but still strong, functional and fun. The most we've done is tightened the screws. My daughter is now a tall 4 1/2 year old and the bench is still working well for her. I can see this in her playroom for another 2-3 years (maybe we'll paint it in that time) before it becomes too small and uncomfortable for her to use.

ZERO STAR RATING!! CHEAP PRODUCT!! DO NOT PURCHASE!!
by Amazon Customer (1 out of 5 stars)

CHEAP PRODUCT!! Made from very light wood. The predrilled holes are near edges and split out easily. Mine broke and splintered the first time used. Company would not refund or replace. DO NOT PURCHASE!! I gave it one star because I could not rate it lower and post review.

Good idea, poor execution
by S Robert (3 out of 5 stars)

Love the idea, just wish you could find it with better quality wood and craftsmanship. It arrived with a few splinters and gouges in the wood and the table/bench back rest has a spindle that runs down the center (I assume for added support) that was broken in three places rendering it useless for its function. None of the damage was a huge deal for the overall function and I didn't feel like going through the hassle of returning and shipping back the item so I kept it. I just hope it last for two summers.

I wouldn't be comfortable with more than 2 adults and 2 smaller children using the table at a time. Definitely not 4 average to large adults.

Easy to put together, ended up great with a little effort.

Pretty simple to put together. The holes do not line up though. Just make sure to check them as the screws will go right through the side of your beams if you use the pre drilled holes. Having screws in the top, holes I didnt use and screws in the seat, I decided to fill the holes with wood filler, glaze it, add an Ariel sticker and then put epoxy over it. The kids love it. With the epoxy over the top they can us it to write on etc and the crayons or pencils wont puncture the paper.

I didnt do a lot of sanding since I put the coating over it anyway. I would recommend getting this when the kids are like 2 so you have a few years.

Beautiful bench, but assembly is frustrating
by Dave Butte (4 out of 5 stars)

This is a beautiful bench, which is why I give it four stars. Even the assembly is easy (if you have someone helping you), with the exception of the bolts. Any hole that a bolt needs to go through will be recessed, but the bolt still will be barely long enough to get through. Because of this, it was extremely frustrating to try to get any of the nuts to actually get started on any of the bolts. I have pretty small fingertips, and I couldn't even get them in there to start to thread the nut on. One of the pieces was so frustrating, I had to take it to a shop and have the recess bored down about 1/8th" deeper so I could get the nut to start threading onto the bolt.

Keep in mind, the bolts were the only frustrating parts of the assembly. The rest is very easy to put together.

As frustrating as it was to assemble those pieces. this is a very nice-looking bench, and I would recommend it to anyone that has a small patio where space is at a premium. This sits as a bench at the edge of my patio and very easily converts to a picnic table big enough for four adults to hang out.

Definitely worth the money.

All in all the product is a good product. Out of the box there was a small piece underneath the bench that have broken; However, it was quickly mended with wood glue.

That would capacity is really good. As it stands currently and has a withheld over 300 pounds on a single bench.

I would recommend that before using the bench that you water seal it. I used Thompson's water seal and thus far I've had no issue with it and heavy weather.

If you're sensitive to the smell of evergreen you might want to wear a mask when you first open the box as the smell of the wood can be quite strong; however, once placed outside it dissipates fairly quickly.

The bench/table is very lightweight and easy to move. My mother who is disabled has been able to fold, and unfold the table as well as move the table too different positions on the patio with ease.

My family and I are so happy with this purchase that we plan on purchasing another very soon.

Perfect for a VPK school, has an 80% chance of a full and correct order though

Great, sturdy table for little ones. Easy for volunteers to put together, sand, and seal. In fact, I purchased 10 sets for a big volunteer group to put together, and after all was said and done, there were two boxes without hardware (but the pink plastic baggy that they would have come in is still included in the boxes). Cannot return items as the tables are completely unpacked, but hoping that Merry Gardens reaches out to identify the sizes of bolts and screws to purchase independently.

Great addition for apartments or townhouses with limited space
by JAC (3 out of 5 stars)

I bought this some time ago and it's just been sitting in the Box. Once I opened it I realized most of the pieces are already put together so assembly was not that badd. My grandson likes to put things together so I had him do most of it hes 5 and he could figure it out so I'm pretty sure most people will be OK. If you have a small back yard and apartment Or just limited space I think this unit for the price is nice. I would recommend waterproof in it if it's going to be out in the weather or covered up if you pay attention to how your open it and close in it and know its limitations I believe it will last you as long as you want it to. Ultimately I'm happy with with it.

No assembly instructions
by Lisa C. (3 out of 5 stars)

The first thing- it arrived with no instructions! Not a good start... Tried to find a youtube video to see if anyone had put anything up regarding the assembly- nothing. Wrote to the company on their website asking if there were instructions available but, so far, nothing. Looked online to see if anyone had any advice regarding this and found someone else saying theirs also arrived without instructions. Another said instructions that came were rather unclear. Hmmmm...

Not as good as before
by P. Messenger (3 out of 5 stars)

Previously, this was sold with plastic caps on the ends of all pieces of wood that touch the ground. But, not anymore. Which just leaves them to wick up whatever moisture that's around. Obviously, this will shorten their lives. As will the lesser sealant/ stain that's used now. This definitely will be the last time I buy these.
