I recently had my first baby and wanted so badly to breastfeed exclusively. Unfortunately my milk production was low and baby became very frustrated about that and he began to clamp down on my breast with his gums and twist his head side to side. Very painful for me! Because of this, I decided I would try pumping and giving him breastmilk in a bottle. My nipples became very sore and scabbed from pumping to the point where I had to take a break. This caused me to become engorged. A friend had mentioned that she used theses nipple shields for breastfeeding her little one. I ended up sending daddy to the store in the middle of the night in search of these. I used it right away and really wished I had known about them sooner. I feel I could have avoided much of the stress, pain, and frustration that I experienced with breastfeeding. These are pretty thin but protected my nipples from soreness and biting. I could still feel if baby clamped down too tightly or sucked voraciously but it was not painful any longer. I found that theses stay on well even though they seem like they would just fall off. A couple drops of breastmilk is all that I needed to keep them in place. I also found that once I had the shield in place, it encouraged my milk let down. The tip of the shield would start to fill up with milk after getting it in place and waiting a very short time. I would recommend these to any breastfeeding mother, especially if the are new moms and working to get the hang of breastfeeding. You cannot live without them!!! Make sure to have them on hand before baby arrives so you are not sending daddy out to hunt them down at all hours of the night.

Better than Lansinoh shield

These were a lifesaver. I used them for the first few weeks because of latch issues and later because of pain from thrush. They did not affect my supply negatively at all and made breastfeeding bearable when it would have been too painful otherwise. I tried these and the lansinoh brand - these fit me much better, were easier for my baby to latch onto, and felt softer and more natural. I felt like she took in way more air with the lansinoh ones, the silicone was unnecessarily thick, and they were constantly coming off while she was nursing.

I weaned her from the shield at around 4 weeks because I don't want to have to rely on it long term... they are inconvenient to carry around and use in public and it was becoming a hassle to keep up with them and keep them clean (I sterilized them every time I used one because of the thrush). It did take a little over a week to get her used to latching without a shield, but it wasn't a huge struggle to wean her from them like I was worried about. She is now 6 weeks and doing fine without it and her latch has improved on its own so I'm pain free. However, I do not think it would be unreasonable to use these for the duration of breastfeeding if you needed to because of inverted nipples or something like that... it's an extra step but still easier than pumping and worrying about bottles.

If you end up having to use a nipple shield, I would recommend trying to latch your baby without it as often as you can bear so she doesn't "forget how" like mine did, just because i think it would have made weaning her from it easier. But don't be afraid to use this product if it means you'll be able to continue breastfeeding instead of giving up!

Helpful for newborns that are causing bruised /painful nipples

My wife used these in the hospital, and we ordered some more to have around in different rooms.

Pros:
1) stopped bleeding / painful feedings when baby was not latching very well, and longer feedings were causing her a lot of pain and grief
2) seemed to have a neutral effect on latching (nothing positive or negative, neutral)

Cons:
1) Gas - He certainly got more gas, probably due to the fact these can be a bit hard to keep on.
2) Can be difficult to keep on, even using liquid to help create a better seal. I'm nut sure if the product can be improved to fix this, but caused issues with spitup and longer feedings

Overall though, this was a necessary thing for us to have for awhile. We no longer need it, but was helpful to keep my wife able to feed as long as possible until we no longer had latching issues and feedings were no longer painful.

20mm shields have sharp ridges that irritate baby's mouth

I've been using nipple shields with my 7 week old since he was born with no issues whatsoever until I received this shield. I was pretty sure I just received a defective product until I bought it again and it has the same issue? This shield fits well however it has a plastic ridge around the nipple that is really irritating my baby's mouth. I have two other Medela shields that are 24 mm and neither have this ridge. It isn't sharp to the touch but there is a definite hard plastic line that, after nursing for 20 minutes, really would hurt. My baby doesn't latch on well or suck as long with this one because the plastic rubbing his gums is really irritating.

I'm not sure how I got through my first child without one of these. I have had two small children (under 10 percentile) and I have found that with little babies they have little mouths which can make for painful nursing. With my daughter I managed through it until she was big enough that it didn't hurt anymore. With my newest baby I was in a lot of pain, chapping, and it hurt real bad someone recommended I purchase a nipple shield and I am glad I did!

Pros:
- Doesn't hurt to nurse anymore - my nipples have been saved
- Easy to clean
- No issues getting him to latch

Cons:
- Maybe it's just me but it's a little hard to keep track of (I ended up ordering two) when you exclusively breastfeed you use it every two hours if not more and with little sleep and a lot going on a couple times I lost track of it (would be nice if it came with a case or something)
- It can be messy, the milk pools in the end of the nipple part so when he unlatches after a feeding the extra milk will spill on to you or your baby
- Sometimes when he's fussy at a feeding he'll pull it off as I'm bringing him into nurse

Overall - well worth it if you are if you are in pain, at the very least it worth a try before you quit nursing because of the pain or just in pain and trying to push through it.

These have been a godsend to me. I originally used them since I have rather flat nipples and could not get a good latch. After using them for about a month I tried to wean my baby off of them with the help of an LC because I had read that babies get less milk when using nipple shields. My LC advised that is no longer the case since the plastic (silicone?) is so thin now. I found it harder to nurse without the shields (and much more painful!) so I went back to using these even though my baby can latch fine without them.

There are some downsides: they fall off at times, the baby can smack them off etc. and so you rarely get one latch that lasts the entire nursing session; if you lose them and your baby does not know how to latch without them...you're screwed; and they are easy to lose/throw away! However these minor issues would not deter me from using them on my next baby.

I have used these every day for about four months and do not see any wear and tear so one set is enough.

Breastfeeding saver!

These are the reason I am breastfeeding! My first baby had a strong suck which caused my nipples to bleed. I almost gave up breastfeeding but then a lactation consultant recommended these. I did use them for the entire time I breastfed, two and a half years. Now I use them with my twin girls because they were born premature so it helped them stay latched and breastfeed. I am still using them. One drawback is that the baby will get used the them so it maybe hard to phase them out. But if you don't mind using them for a long time then they are great. Only my second son nursed successfully without them and that was great too :) but if you need them, they can save your breastfeeding relationship!

Life saver!

My son has some latch issues and after two weeks my nipples were cracked and bleeding. We saw the lactation specialist and she recommended we start using these to give me a chance to heal (there was also medicated cream involved). My little dude is 6 weeks now and we are still going strong breastfeeding and we're still using the shields. Wonderful product. As much as I would like to not have to use them- I have to let it go. We're both doing great and that's what matters most.

Can't fit these to my nippes very well.

So far I have purchased the small and medium sizes of these nipple shields and I can't make it fit. I would definitely recommend to people buying it to go with the smaller size before trying the size you think might fit. I ordered the medium size first, and then the small, and I can't seem to get my nipple to fill the shield up on the inside. There is still a bit of air and empty silicon that my LO would have to suck hard on before MAYBE getting any milk started! Perhaps I'm doing something wrong???

I still gave this product so many stars because it does seem like a well-made product and has so many other good reviews... I believe that I just have to figure it out better.

I'm wondering if part of my problem might be because I am no longer nursing a newborn (-my LO turned one a month ago), and my nipples aren't as big anymore.

I bought these to help reduce scraping, now that my LO has a mouth full of new teeth. He knows not to bite, but sometimes accidentally scrapes my nipples , since he is still getting used to his teeth.

What a lifesaver!

I just had my 4th child and have breastfed all of my children with no problems. I was so frustrated in the hospital when my newborn could not seem to latch onto the left side but no problem on the right. Luckily my lactation consultant brought me one of these and it was instant that she was able to latch on. I was so relieved! From my hospital bed, I decided to purchase more. This is an excellent product that I highly recommend to anyone that plans to nurse, even if you have been successful nursing before.
