Complete duds. Would not lift off despite experienced handlers and superb weather conditions.by Santa Fe Shopper (1 out of 5 stars)
December 20, 2015
Extremely disappointed. I have lots of experience with flying lanterns that actually work. These did not work at all, and were dangerous in their inefficacy. Simply put, their construction makes them too heavy to actually launch. I suspect from all the positive reviews on this product that prior to December 2015, a differently constructed product was being sold that actually worked.
First problem: They arrived damp (and heavy from the moisture.) Perhaps they need a packet of desiccant?
Second problem: After thoroughly drying them indoors, they simply failed to lift off. They burned bright and filled with hot air, but were simply too heavy to achieve lift. This was a windless night with an ambient air temperature well below freezing, so there was plenty of thermal differential. Other sky lanterns have worked beautifully for us, soaring many hundreds of feet in the air.
These were utter duds, just dangerous flaming balls that fell to the ground and threatened to catch the bushes on fire.
With practice, they work well.

They work as described, but they do take a bit of practice to fly successfully. The first two were successful, but could have been better (the lantern only went up about 100-200 feet. By the third try we had it down to a science, and the flights went up almost out of sight.
We discovered that they fly much better if you wait for the outside air temp to drop below about 70 degrees.
The photograph below was taken just as the sun was about to set. That was our first flight.
Tips:
If the outside air is not below 70 degrees, chose a different night. The air will not be dense enough for a good flight.
Carefully unfold the lantern completely. Make sure it is 100% open and not torn. The hot air will not expand the lantern. You must manually open it.
Patch any tear with a tiny bit of scotch tape.
Carefully attach the wax fuel, by pushing the wire though the hole.
One person must hold the lantern, while the second lights the wax fuel.
Use a propane, butane torch, or candle to light the wax fuel. Do not use a lighter or match.
Beware of hot dripping wax. No it will not seriously burn you, but it is uncomfortable.
Hold the lantern up high and wait about 45 seconds for the air inside to heat up.
When you feel enough lift, release the lantern, and give it a gentle upward push.
When it starts to go up, make a wish, or a prayer.
Pros:
They look spectacular in flight.
They are unique.
They are safer than fireworks.
Low cost.
Well packaged.
The flight lasts about three minuets, unlike a firework that lasts about 10-15 seconds.
Cons:
The shape and size are a little different from the item shown in the photograph.
They drip hot wax on you if you are not careful.
They will only work if the outdoor air temperature is less than about 70 degrees.
The instructions are badly translated Chinese.
GREAT GREAT PRODUCT.. but please read my notes.

I bought these to use as a anniversary marker; so far I have only used one, it was 30 days after my dog passed away. I didn't realize how big it was going to be... I was probably distraught when I bought and didn't read the description. But they are BIG.. which makes sense- so you can see them when they are in the air.
It takes about 4/5 minutes fr the lanterns to heat up enough to float up, so don't panic, they work. If you kinda just hold the top of it while it heats up you will feel it start to lift. The only glitch for me was the little fuel pod kept slipping off, so I took a little lightweight twig and slid through the wire and twisted it around twig. Definitely don't light this baby up if there is ANY breeze - because this lantern may have been a slow launch, but once it hit 20 feet - it took about 10 seconds and then before I knew it it was probably 80 feet up and drifting off the lake where I had lite it. I was worried it was going to fly into a neighborhood, so I sorda ran/walked to keep an eye on the flame until I saw it go out. I'm not joking, it probably traveled about a quarter mile before the flame went out. Amazing product - it performed better then expected. It was only due to me being a first time lantern burner that there were a couple difficulties and I underestimated the flying power. But amazing product. It arrived about 10 days after ordering.. from China. The packaging was super secure.
FIRE HAZZARD, fell apart, don't ruin your beautiful moments.

I've used sky lanterns in the past and they are a gorgeous activity for ceremony or any momentous occasion. Having said that, you want to use something of quality and something you don't have to worry about.
These did not do well. Out of the pack of 10, only 2 worked. Our best friend passed away this year and we wanted to send up some messages of love to the sky and these were a mess. They would fall apart while on ignited falling to the ground. One caught on fire and we had to stamp it out. Eventually we got 2 into the sky, but what a failure on what was meant to be a beautiful moment.
I would advise against these.

We have been buying the Eco Wish Lanterns from Birando for quite awhile. They are $1.65 each by the 100 count, so I thought perhaps these would be a good replacement at a lower cost. These are not even in the same league. The canopy is about half the size (less lift), the fuel cell is not attached and soots very badly, the fuel cell holder is wire (not sure how they call these biodegradable but I guess with enough time...), and the duration is way to short to let them clear even low obstructions safely (again, small canopy as well).
Finally the paper they are made of is poorly glued, and at least half of them are stuck together and tear when you try to open them for flight. So much for the savings. The best part of these was the English translation of the Chinese instructions on each package--that is truly hilarious and gave us lots of entertainment sitting around the fire. Birando Eco Wish Lanterns are the polar opposite of these--pre-assembled, huge canopy, string to hold the fuel, no wire at all, individually packaged and well made. We won't be buying anything else from here on out.
Poor Quality

I was super excited about these. 10 for 5 bucks seemed like a great deal! The quality was ok, a few of them had holes in them upon opening. The wax square was hard to light with a regular lighter, luckily my cousin had a "torch" lighter. But then the lit wax fell out of the lantern onto the ground, we had kids trying to send these off and decided it was too dangerous. They also seemed to take longer then normal to fill with the hot air enough to float on its own. A few times we tried and some came back down quickly (on fire). next time I will pay a little more for better quality. I still have over 25 of them that we just didn't even bother using.
Does not FLY at all!

Bought this product to take to a lanterns festival to supplement the lanterns provided by the festival. Thousands of lanterns went into the air. The lanterns provided by the Festival.
We lit up these lanterns. They lifted a little but not into the sky. Like lifted 5-6 feet then started falling. At which point they started taking and became a fire hazard. Some wouldn't even do that. They would puff up but then never lift at all.
In comparison the other brand of lanterns would escape our hold and fly high as there was a slight breeze, since there was so much left to them. this takes out the atmospheric considerations and also user skill. These lanterns are DUDS.
They changed the design

I bought a box of 10 sky lanterns from this company in 2010 and absolutely loved them. They always had plenty of lift on take off and went very high in the sky. I timed them and they had approximately a 4 minute light time before they extinguished.
I wanted to buy some more this year and went through the same company. They have changed the design as they are smaller in dimension and do not have the lift and duration of the ones I bought last year. They are still nice to see lit and floating upwards. I just thought I was buying the same product that I received in 2010 and therefore disapointed in the performance in comparison.
I almost didn't buy this product because of the bad reviews. But I'm happy I did

I almost didn't buy this product because of the bad reviews. But I'm happy I did, they worked as expected. If a buyer has not been happy with the product it's probably because they didn't follow the instructions. Here's a tip in order for hot air to rise it has to be hotter than the air around it. So send them up when the night air is cool... like in the fall. Totally happy with this product, if your smart enough to set them off correctly you will be content with your purchase.
Don't waste your money

I bought these for a family vacation at the beach, thinking it was something we could all do together on our last night at the beach house. These were a massive disappointment. They don't light, when they do, they go up in flames completely and - worst of all - when you happen to, by the grace of God, get one of these to light and not *completely* burn away, it never -- and I mean NEVER -- goes up into the air to resemble any sort of floating.
I'd return these to the seller, but I can't imagine them conning any other poor soul who decides to waste their hard earned money. I threw what was left of them in the trash where they belonged from the get go.
