Tailored Tension
The Varigrip allows the user the unique ability to adjust the tension for each finger. This makes strengthening individual fingers simple and prevents you from favoring certain fingers.
Fitness For Your Fingers
For most musicians the pre-show warm-up is an integral part of playing a great show. With the D'Addario/Planet Waves Varigrip players can get their fingers, hands, and forearms in peak form before they hit the stage.
Comfortable to Use
Just because you're working out doesn't mean you can't feel comfortable doing so. The overmolded finger pads and grip help make your conditioning comfortable.
Toughen Your Tips
By removing the reversible molded grip you can uncover a simulated string on the other side of the Varigrip that helps develop and maintain finger calluses. This lets you combine grip strength with the needs of string musicians.

With a quick mod, it's awesome!by Ray (4 out of 5 stars)

The simulated strings are really just bumps under the grip, but when you reverse the grip, it's wobbly (see pics 2 & 3), and the rubber grip easily gets slippery, so I left it in its original location and put standard staples into each of the finger "buttons" - now, I can build up my callouses on each individual finger while I sit at my desk.
This thing surprised the bleep out of me

So, I got this just to maintain some sort of guitaring motion while I'm at work. I had no idea this could be used to improve performance the way it has, and in such a short time! I w it as more of a gimmick. Well, I was wrong.
This thing is great. The action is not as smooth as it could be, as it is all plastic, but the results after a week of use surprised the junk out of me! Fingers are noticeably stronger and more dextrous. I've been playing for about 30 years and I was shocked at the difference this thing made in my playing. The key is not to press each plunger like you're riffing... Take it with you in your pocket and press and hold each plunger, one finger at a time for 6 second each, as many reps as you can fit in. Trust me, after a week, you will be amazed at the difference of the feeling of your guitar. Bends will be effortless and your speed of hammer-ons increased along with better accuracy. I'm not making this up, I was very surprised.
For those wondering, "where is the simulated string, to maintain callous???", on the opposite side of the plungers, the gray rubber piece that cushions against your palm, remove that to reveal 3 simulated 10 gauge E strings. These also surprised me at how well they worked to build callous on my pinky, which does not get used often enough! I just press each finger, four at a time, into the " strings " and hold. The result is awesome. Give this thing a try, it's not just for n00bs!
Not just for guitar and piano!

I bought this for my dad who suffered a T.I.A., transient ischemic attack, a small stroke. He left dominate hand was affected. He is barber and this tremendously affect him.
His index and ringer finger were coming along nicely but his pinky and ring finger we slow to rehabilitate.
The Varigrip help with the two fingers lacky behind the rest becauase of the individual finger settings. I would recommend it to people who needs rehab in their hands due to injury along with it original purpose.
Thank you
Great for motor-neuron disease weakness

For ALS, MS, CIDP and masturbation hand strength this item can't be beat. Motor-neuron disease steals muscle strength. My hand therapist and her sisters recommended this item.
Not the model pictured; has contoured grip
by ReeVue (3 out of 5 stars)

I have one of these that I keep at work, and absolutely love it. But when I bought one for home, they have updated the model with a contoured grip, which I don't like nearly as much. It may seem picky, but I find the flat grip more suitable for developing finger dexterity because you're free to position you thumb on the back grip if you want to change position, whereas the moulded grip kind of locks your hand into one position, which seems more suited for strictly developing strength. I would say the change is not an improvement, and it's definitely not what's pictured, so I'm returning it.
Overall good but could be better.

Helps conditioning hands. It is a sturdy item and I love that you can dial the resistance so i can work on pinky and ring finger. Rubber grip is soft amd comfortable. The most useful feature is the ridges to help building the callus on the fingertips.
Overall I like this item however, there are a couple of negative things.
First of all, to press the pistons down you need to engage them in a perfect vertical manner otherwise they get stuck. This creates another issue, to press on the callus making ridges with your fingertips it is uncomfortable as the item itself is too large. I have bog hands and can barely do it, i cant even imagine how people with smaller hands manage to do it. I notice this only when I try to press down with the tips of my fingers.
Seeing Results in Less Than 12 Hours

Amazon delivered this the same day I purchased it (it probably helps that Amazon has a distribution center in the closed shopping mall that's 1/2 mile from my home), and so I had to break it out after it arrived in the evening and start breaking it in. I have to say, when I awoke this morning, I could already start feeling increased strength in my forearm, in my fingers, and in the grip of my hand. I haven't played the guitar in about 10 years, and haven't played religiously like I used to in more than 30 years. So I need to rebuild hand and finger strength and of course, those critically important calluses. I'm confident this will help speed the process significantly. I might also suggest using this in your picking hand if you finger pick your instrument (such as a classical guitar or a banjo). And trumpet players might benefit from it, as well. I would definitely recommend it.
Great workout for your hands...

Exactly what I was looking for to help build strength in my hands. Didn't take me long to admit just how weak my aging hands had become :-).
The product is well constructed, easily adjustable for each finger to increase the force required to press each plunger and the silicon rubber pads are comfortable on the palm and finger tips.
I do three sets of 20 each day to develop both the strength in my left hand and to better train each finger while also building strength.
not built to last

Not that I expected a fifteen-dollar product to last forever, especially with daily high-resistance use, but this one broke before six months had elapsed. There are a handful (groan) of possible positions, but the callous builder is too mild to be effective and the device itself is pretty uncomfortable.
It broke just like every one of these I've tried: the seat of one of the buttons' springs cracked, so one of the buttons has minimal resistance and doesn't return to position. Perhaps for the occasional user, or for someone who uses minimal resistance, or for someone with larger hands, this would work fine...but I won't buy another.
Tension high for beginners
by michelle (3 out of 5 stars)

It's made well, but the tension is way too high for a beginner even on the lowest setting. My pinky and ring finger collapse, and I bought this to strengthen them. Plus, the product listing doesn't even give the tension measurements so I can't compare to other products.
I'll come back to this after working myself up to being able to use this one - shame I'll have to buy another product to do so.
