Bring on the cold!
by Matt Murphy (5 out of 5 stars)
January 3, 2017

Have had these for a year now and I love them. They remain on my fat bike all winter long. I commute to work, ride singletrack, and just go and get lost on the bike and never worry about my hands being cold. I wear a thin liner glove or go bare handed. I bought the XL to have the most room for my hands to get in and out, or to make room for a bulkier glove if needed. My coldest ride has been air temp at -15 with a 15mph wind. With the liner gloves I did throw a hand warmer in each Bar Mitt. Hands got cool but never cold.

My only complaint/criticism is I wish they had a better way of attaching to the end of the handlebars. It is a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things, and is really only an issue for me when riding singletrack or technical trails. It take a minute to reattach when they come off.

Hands stay comfortable. I've gone bare-handed at 15 degrees without discomfort
by Mark Champine (4 out of 5 stars)

I'm a year-round bike commuter in the northeast, and at 5 degrees there's not a glove I've found that can keep my fingers from going numb by the time I arrive at my destination. With these, it's no comparison. Hands stay comfortable. I've gone bare-handed at 15 degrees without discomfort. Amazing!

Some very minor downsides:

They crowd my shift lever a little bit, so shifting becomes slightly awkward.

Too much effort to take on and off for me to do that at work. I have to trust they won't be stolen.

You have to get good at slipping your hand back in quickly after signaling a turn. Makes me skip signally more often than I should.

But I'll take all that happily for the amazing warmth. Blessed relief!!

Nice Fat Biking addition

Cold hands or cold feet are a ride killer. And these things really help.

They were easy to attach and at first, it was a little different getting your hand in and out (more putting your hand back on the bars as opposed to remove them). But eventually as the gloves break in, they tend to stay "open" more where they as they had more of a tendency to want to be more closed when I first got them- and then it becomes second nature like they're not even there. Don't be afraid to adjust them here and there to get the optimal angle. But I almost never get cold hands now after being out 2.5 hours riding in 5 degree weather.

Only a couple of cons so far. One is the price. For what they are material wise, $50 bucks seems a little steep. But that is quickly offset consider what they are doing for you. And to be fair, they the most affordable option in this category. I also have a tear on one after a half dozen trail rides. There have been numerous occasions where they have been struck by stray branches or when I had to ride through into part of bush to avoid ice or a rut on the trail. I am almost sure this is how it happened. Hard to blame the product when we all know how sharp those broken branches or twigs can get.

Overall, a must buy for mountain biking at this price. If they got stolen tomorrow, I would not hesitate to replace them.

Superior product!

Great piece of gear and essential in cold weather. There's no way you'll find gloves that are as warm as this without the bulk that makes them impossible for cycling (e.g. lobster gloves). There's an inside Velcro strap to anchor the mitt to your handlebar in addition to the zipper/Velcro tabs that secure it to the handlebars. The zipper closes the front so that no cold drafts get in (so that is essential), yet the glove is large enough to let air circulate inside. I find it easy to pull my hands out of the glove - it's like they're not even there. No problem shifting or braking. I like to change my hand position on the bar and these allow me to do that. They fit my hybrid bike but not the mountain bike only because I have one cable that extends out too far. Without that, they would fit easily.

Pros: durable and good quality, keeps hands/fingers/wrists warm in temps as low as freezing, you can use whatever type of normal cycling glove you like, zipper + Velcro tab design is perfect for preventing cold drafts from entering, you can move your hands along the handlebars and shift/brake unencumbered, I think the s/m will fit most women and their bikes and lg/xlg will fit most men and theirs.

Cons: absolutely none! This is a brilliantly designed product for cold weather cyclists. Worth every penny.

Excellent wind-blocking, decent heat retention. A winter biking must-have.
by George Coghill (4 out of 5 stars)

These things are great. They really do help cut the wind down and help keep the heat trapped. I went with the medium size as I planned on wearing winter bike gloves, and they worked out great on my hybrid bike.

The Velcro attachment system is a bit janky, so one star off for that. But for functionality and price, these things were a worthy investment and along with a pair of cheap ski goggles, made winter biking pretty easy.

And while these things work, don't expect miracles. I've found that my hands naturally warm up after about 30 minutes of cold weather cycling. This is referred to as the "hunter's response", and has to do with your capillaries in the hands opening back up. Everyone differs as to when that happens.

I definitely needed some heavy-ish winter bike gloves on in addition to the Bar Mitts when the temps got below 25-30º. The Mitts cut down on the wind primarily, and help trap heat secondarily. The Bar Mitts and gloves are like a 2-piece system.

I also like the fact that I can use my handlebar mirror with these. The other brands don't seem to offer that functionality.

At some point, I can see myself upgrading to the extreme cold version of these.

Edit: I ended up upgrading to the Extreme version of these, and the fleece along with the insert wrist collar made a noticeable difference in warmth over the Standard version.

If your hands only get moderately cold while winter riding, these may do the trick. I wear full-finger gloves at around 55º weather, and would have the Bar Mitts installed by 35-40º weather for sure. If that gives you a reference temperature range to work with.

The Extreme version is also a bit easier to install, with the dedicated bar-end plugs versus the hook-and-loop internal tie-offs in the basic version.

These will become instant must-have items for cold-weather biking once used the first really cold ride. Consider investing in the Extreme version off the bat, especially if cold hands are your main issue with winter cycling. Along with some cheap ski goggles, Bar Mitts will make you more enthusiastic about cold weather riding, so you'll easily get value out of the Extreme upgrade.

I do not regret my purchase of either set.

Finally, warm hands!!
by J. Hutton (5 out of 5 stars)

These work exactly as advertised. I have a very hard time keeping my fingers warm when the temps go below 40 degrees American, and the Bar Mitts have allowed me to ride in temps down into the teens wearing only summer weight full-fingered gloves. Any feeling of claustrophobia -- or having your hands feel "trapped" passes almost immediately. It's very easy to insert/remove your hands, and your hands will come away from the bars just fine in the event of a crash. In fact, because I can wear normal weight gloves I feel like I have much better control then when I wear thick Winter weight gloves or "lobster" gloves. They are very well made and feel worthy of the price. They have stood up to repeated installation/removal without issue. I have the "roadie" drop-bar version of these too, and I highly recommend those as well.

Put your money here not in the gloves
by Satch (4 out of 5 stars)

Awesome. Solved my cold fingers problem. I tried a half dozen glove combinations, both biking and mountaineering. Nothing kept my fingers warm at 25° and below until I got these. They are dirt simple to install and work great. I have only been down to 15° so far but with winter biking gloves my fingers are warm again. The only cold moments I have had are when the bike sits outside and the handlebars get cold. Then the first few minutes of the ride I have cold fingers, but through no fault of the Bar Mitts. It's just that the cold handlebars suck the heat out of my hands initially until they warm up. They look ridiculous, but I don't care. They take some getting used to since you can't just grab the bars in a panic while riding with a hand out. You have to look down and line up your finger tips with the opening, which tends to close, and then shove your hand in between the flaps. It's a little tricky and takes your eye off the rode for a couple seconds.

THEY WORK!
by Margaret I. (5 out of 5 stars)

I bought XL and they seem huge, but I have an eBike, and the controls all have to fit inside. I've ridden my bike almost a year, so I'm familiar with the (now invisible) controls - my worry was room, and I can slide my left hand toward the center, and operate the controls. It's a little tighter than I'd like, but it works. Riding with these (and because they are so big (I'm only 5'2") the cover half my forearms. I'm so happy to not have frigid hands! But, I must say, I don't find them WARM. Just not cold. So I had wondered about spending almost twice as much to get the EXTREME version, and I think I made the right choice because I need room inside to work the controls. I gave them 5 stars because the mitts seem very well made and are thicker than I expected.

If you cycle in cold weather, buy these now!
by T. Dieterich (5 out of 5 stars)
March 16, 2014

I resisted buying pogies/barmitts for a very long time -- and I have no idea why.

Before the Bar Mitts, I used lobster-claw style gloves, silk liners, and hand warmers. While all these kind of sort of worked, my fingers would still suffer in the cold when it the temperature dipped below -25F, and I would suffer some loss of dexterity from all of the stuff surrounding my hands.

So I finally picked up a set of these, and had a few revelations:

The lobster claw gloves I normally use were too much, even in -25F weather. Because of this, I could get rid of the silk liners, and lobster-claw gloves, and started riding with a lighter set of gloves (that I normally use in Spring and Fall) and the Bar Mitts.

Had I done this at the beginning I'd have saved a decent chunk of money, since my lobster gloves, silk liners, and hand warmers cost more than the bar mitts.

By using a lighter set of gloves, I have more hand dexterity. That means signalling for turns/stops is easier, breaking is easier, shifting is easier.

So all in all, I wish I had gone to these much sooner. These are high quality products that have survived some VERY cold weather [down to -42F]. If you're a year round commuter, or you just like to cycle during the winter, these are worth every penny.
