I'm a big fan of this stovetop grill. My apartment building has the most sensitive fire alarm in the world. I have had it go off when I'm making quesadillas on my stove and I hadn't even burned anything. Since the entire building sets an alarm off in each apartment when one of the smoke detectors is triggered, I was a little nervous about trying this grill. I'm impressed that it did not produce a bit of smoke and the food came out great.

You do have to preheat it. The instructions say to preheat until you can hear a "sizzle." I threw droplets of water on it with my fingertips until I heard a sizzle. For the photos I uploaded, I had marinated chicken overnight in a delicious mustard rosemary marinade and it turned out great. I also added some dried rosemary to the water ring and my apartment smelled like rosemary while it heated up and created some fragrant steam. It took about 15 minutes for my gas stovetop to heat the stovetop grill enough to hear a sizzle. Then I butterflied one of the chicken breasts and left the other one thick to test which one would come out better. They take longer than you think they will since the heat isn't concentrated like you get with an outdoor grill. I flipped over the chicken at around ten minutes and they didn't stick at all which is amazing since I didn't use a drop of oil to grease this grill (but there was some olive oil in the marinade). I used a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature and took off the chicken breasts when the meat met an internal temp of 165 degrees. Clean-up was easy. The surface is truly nonstick. The chicken came out delicious with a crisp "crust" on the outside, but truly tender and juicy on the inside. The butterflied chicken cooked faster and got more crisp since there was more surface area. Both came out great!

I'm so excited to be able to grill in my apartment despite the sensitive fire alarm!

I filled the ring with 1/2 cup water like the instructions said and oiled the non-stick top

I bought this type of grill as a recommendation from a coworker for grilling meats indoors. I live in a small apt and don't have a lot of space for storage of a large griddle. I saw other similar items on Amazon, but the cheaper ones had reviews stating that the non stick peeled after a use. I figured I'd shell out an extra few bucks if it meant longevity.

I filled the ring with 1/2 cup water like the instructions said and oiled the non-stick top, like another reviewer suggested for easier clean up. The meat turned out amazing. One reviewer said that you need to preheat a while as it's 2-3" from the flame, but mine was smoking in a couple minutes. I think you need to know your burning to gage preheating. My gas stove top is so hot that usually when cook, I can only turn it up 3/4 of the way for "high" heat or it damages my nonstick pans. I turned it up all the way so it would get nice and hot.

I bought a pack of pre-marinated thinly sliced Korean BBQ meat (bulgoggi) and the meat turned out juicy w/some nice crisp caramelized edges, which took maybe 5 min for the first batch, less for the next. Also, as I went to put on the next batch, the grill was already too hot and starting to burn, so i had to turn it down.

Yes, there is some smoking, as you're grilling meat as that's what meat does when you grill it. Yes, there will be a little bit of sputtering, as that's what meat does when you grill it. Clean up of the non stick top layer of the grill and the aluminum ring was super easy. Just a quick wipe with my soap sponge. Underneath, on the other side of the non stick side of the grill is harder. I scraped using my nail through the soap sponge and was able to get most of it off. I can't wait to try out some shish kabobs, burgers and steak. As this was only my first use, I have yet to test out it's longevity. But as of now, I. Love. This. Grill.

The volume of high ratings convinced me to try it

The vol of high ratings convinced me to try it. I would have been too skeptical based on appearance alone. Even when it arrived I thought I could tell it would not be so great as the advertising claims. Now that I have used it one time I am very surprised at how it cooked the food. I could describe a list of things leading me to believe that it would perform poorly but it does not matter because somehow the design does better than I imagined.

It is going to require experimentation. Many vegetables need a coating of something (I would have used an oil) or they just become dried charcoal instead of charred on the grill. But I got this to avoid/reduce fat and grease. A sauce maybe? Olive oil maybe? My first attempt was an experiment.

I recommend adding some liquid smoke to the trough of water. It definitely fills in the gap between indoor and outdoor grilling. I live where you cannot BBQ and this gets surprisingly close with the liquid smoke. Liquid smoke doesn't taste like the food has been BBQ'd to me but in the steaming water the vapor imparts convincing flavor and aroma.

I like grilled food to be charred outside and juicy inside. You have to open up the house or the smoke alarm will go off. It just crosses into that territory.....it isn't billowing like an outdoor BBQ but meat will have enough fat to create some smoke if you like it charred outside and juicy inside. I didn't expect it but there was relatively little and it cleared out quickly once I opened up a little more ventilation.

I think this will be ideal for grilling fish. I prefer denser meats like beef and pork to char pretty good on the outside. This could achieve that but you would need several fans blowing air in and out the windows causing a strong flow or fresh air. Fish cooks so much faster and smoking is so much easier to control.

Docked it one star for a caveat: The way it sits on the stove top. I have a gas stove. I doubt this cooks as good on an electric but it proved me wrong in other aspects so who knows? I think my stove top grate is fairly standard. Even if it isn't, the design of this pan could be improved so it has a smaller diameter ring on the bottom that would accommodate a greater diversity of appliances. If I shift it more than 1.5" (which could easily happen when cooking) it is going to tip and slide off the grate. That hot liquid will severely injure you if it splashes or spills on you. I have to have it on a front burner because it is too wide and will potentially scratch part of the stove that extends above the grate along the wall. This will greatly depend on your stove. But I am going to look around for a way to lock it down. A cast iron C-clamp may work. It could be clamped to my stove grate and serve as a fence preventing the grill from sliding off the grate.

For only $20 give this a try. It is not even built as cheaply as I expected. All non-stick coatings stop working eventually. Google "America's Test Kitchen" on this topic. Their research is as scientific as you'll probably find. Hopefully this will last at least the average lifespan. But just remember it was only $20.

Works great! Keep in mind one thing

I had one of these 20 years ago, but it was cheap and would warp in any kind of med or high heat. This is much higher quality. I tested it today with a chicken tender. I wanted to test one before I risked it ruining the rest of my chicken.

This heats up fast, little smear of oil and it's extra non stick. Basically I LOVE this thing. My chicken tender grilled nice and golden brown with no smoke. I can't wait to try a steak, chicken thighs, pork chops, ham steaks and so much more.

I live in San Francisco in a small apt so I have a small stove. I lucked out in that the grill barely sits on a burner. Make sure your stove/burner is large enough to stabilize the grill.

Other than that - good grilling!!!

I AM OBSESSED! I hate cooking meat in a frying pan or oven (mostly because I suck at it), but to put a piece of meat on a grill the grill does the work for you and the meat comes out perfect every time. I live in a 1br apartment in LA and I don't have my own outdoor space, so having a real grill isn't an option, but this.. THIS.. has solved my problems, and I'm thrilled. It's super easy to clean too, which is a huge bonus.

Very Satisfied!

Very pleased with this product. Delivery was swift.

Great product for the price.

I received the grill today, took it out of the box, carefully read the simple instructions, washed and dried it in hot soapy water, rubbed the cooking surface with a little oil, filled the ring with water as directed, preheated the grill over MEDIUM heat, on my gas stove (it fit perfectly) and placed my marinated Korean boneless, skinless chicken thighs on the cooking surface. This grill heats up very quickly, and in no time I had absolutely juicy and delicious chicken thighs. My apartment only smelled of the delicious aroma of grilling Korean barbecued chicken thighs.

This product actually GRILLS, rather than steams, with the fat running down into the liquid ring ( I like this healthy option), and the chicken had a nice char. I also basted it half way through cooking with fresh marinade. No smoke, no splatter, no mess, no smoke alarms going off in my apartment, no neighbors banging on the door. I didn't even turn on the exhaust fan.

I washed the grill by hand, and cleanup was a snap!!

Can't wait to try veggies and shrimp next.

For some reviewers who had problems with smoking and splatter.

Follow the instructions carefully.

Do not cook on high heat -- you really don't need to, this grill gets plenty hot on medium.

Fill the liquid ring with 1/2 cup of liquid.

Do not place frozen food on hot grill, thaw first.

If using marinade, drain the food and pat dry before placing on grill surface.

Trim excess fat from meat and chicken.

Maybe not the best option for huge thick slabs of meat, use your outdoor grill for that.

If grilling burgers use lean ground meat.

I think this grill works best with boneless cuts of meat and chicken.

Pay attention, and do not over cook.

Happy indoor grilling.

Cheers!

... every day for the past 3 days and we LOVE IT. I would recommend grilling non-marinated meats/veg
by Kat M (5 out of 5 stars)
March 7, 2018

We just received this but have used it every day for the past 3 days and we LOVE IT. I would recommend grilling non-marinated meats/veg because the sugars in the sauces will definitely increase the smoke produced, but we just decided to grill salt&peppered meats and dip in sauces as the meat is ready (think Korean BBQ style cooking, we are also using a single range portable gas grill to cook at our table). It seems to clean up very easily after each use and we hope to run it into the ground. The price point is reasonable enough that we don't mind taking good care of it and replacing it once it becomes gunky (if that happens).

Works perfectly

This is awesome. I was a little skeptical but its super easy to use. I just added a half a cup of water to the drip pan and grilled up bacon and garlic bread. The bread had nice grill marks and the bacon got nice and crispy! It definitely gets more heat at the center of the grill and really thick things can take a little longer but I expected that.

Won't fit on my stove and slides.
by Maria Ladybug (1 out of 5 stars)
July 11, 2017

This was useless to me. It won't fit right and stay on the grate or without it. In either case it slides and would be dangerous to put in any liquid. Don't buy it unless perhaps you have a new gas stove. My stove is at least 15 years old and it won't fit right and stay properly.
