Wait...That's Not Tiny A Box Of Japanease Oranges.
by Rusty (5 out of 5 stars)
January 25, 2011

What may to the untrained eye first appear as a tiny box of even-tinier oranges from Japan, is in actuality a cleverly-disguised cat with it's eyes on your cash.

Place a coin upon the fish-shaped plate (the first red-flag that this was indeed NOT a tiny box of oranges), and a "meow" is heard from deep inside. At this point it's too late. You realize it's a trap, and much like Indiana Jones removing an ancient idol from it's stone pedestal, you are powerless to stop the actions you have unknowingly set into motion. Within seconds a second "meow" is heard from the tiny box of oranges... then a paw emerges. A beady-eyed kitten peers out from the shadows in which it dwells. Before you can regain your wits to act, the thieving feline has already stolen your money, its actions based on instinct and without hesitation.

Then, as quickly as it appeared, it retreats back into its dark lair, hidden deep away within the box of "oranges".

Needless to say, my girlfriend loves it.

Not Genuine
by rs (3 out of 5 stars)

First things first, this is NOT a genuine Itazura Coin Bank. I understand the name never claimed it was, but it uses the EXACT SAME PICTURE as the Itazura coin bank. It looks almost identical too from the outside, but there are three [important] differences that would make you not want to buy this.
1. When you press the button, it says some hard-to-make-out word before the meow, which totally removes the effect of a cat stealing the coin since you hear a person speak first.
2. When it does steal the coin, the movement of the cat is so sluggish. It is not like the videos you probably see online. This one is much slower and takes about 2x as long to steal the coin.
3. The grip it has on the coin is not that great. It can't properly steal a dime unless you purposely put it in an unnaturally closer position.

In summary, I bought this because it was $5 cheaper and I didn't mind that it would take half a month to ship. I thought it was cheaper for that very reason, not because it was a fake. Don't buy this. Buy the genuine Itazura coin bank. It's worth the $5 more it costs (plus you get it much sooner)

PS. the actual name of the product is "Mischief Bank" and uses a completely different box from the genuine Itazura coin banks.

Stops working after light usage!
by Aspen Trumps (2 out of 5 stars)
July 9, 2019

I've had this for a little while and all of a sudden it just stopped working. I thought it might have been the batteries but after replacing the it still is malfunctioning. I can press the button and it says the little "hello" but then it just sits there doing nothing, had to throw away the whole bank. I didn't even use it that much so the wear and tear shouldn't be a problem. I don't know what's wrong but I do know I won't be purchasing another.

My daughter was very disappointed with this product

My daughter was very disappointed with this product. First, when you press the button, it says some hard-to-make-out word before the meow... which I think is "Thank You" but not really sure. But it doesn't matter because this takes away the effect of a cat stealing the coin since you hear a person speak first.

Then when it does steal the coin, the movement of the cat is really sluggish. It is not like the videos you probably see online. This one is much slower. Also, at least half of the time, it doesn't steal the coin. Overall, it just feels cheap and useless.

Doesn't MEOW...
by Tiger (1 out of 5 stars)
September 14, 2015

I was so extremely excited when I found this meowing kitty coin bank. I ordered mind and it arrived exactly on time as it said it would. I Threw in a battery and couldn't wait to put in front of my cat to see her reaction like all the other cats i've seen on youtube with this exact fun toy. I hit the button on top and here screams out NOT a MEOW!!, but some gross annoying recorded sound of some high pitched GIRL Screaming "HELLO"!! Then the second sound is unrecognizable. My cat wanted nothing to do with the box after hitting the button a 3rd time in front her, she left the room. I know this not suppose to be a cat toy, but IT IS SUPPOSE to MEOW!!!! The sound is so annoying I wouldn't even want to keep as a fun piggy bank to put change my change in. Returning today..

Extremely Disappointed
by Katelynn Russ (1 out of 5 stars)
September 12, 2015

I was so extremely excited when I found out that they made kitty versions of these coin banks. I ordered mind and it arrived exactly on time as it said it would. When I got home and got around to opening the package, everything appeared to be protected and in good condition. I peeked inside the box and the kitty was intact. I got instructions online because the ones provided were in Japanese or some other foreign language. I followed the instructions to a T, put bran new batteries into my coin bank, turned it on, and nothing happened. I would press the button and there would be no noise. Not even a slight hum of a motor or anything. I tried two different sets of batteries and nothing happened. Then I thought maybe a coin had to be on the button when it was pressed. Tried that, and still nothing. I was extremely upset. Needless to say I returned it immediately the next day and am still awaiting a refund. Nothing is a bigger downer than already having to wait for something, and when it arrives it is defective. Buying a different brand from somewhere else.

Barely works, but even then not really.
by Catherine (1 out of 5 stars)

Doesn't open properly. Cat won't come out to take the coin without me holding the top open. When I do hold the lid open for it to come out it is the slowest thing you've ever witnessed. Not like other similar boxes I've had in the past at all. Complete disappointment.

Works Great! (As of now)
by Pat (5 out of 5 stars)

I bought this cat bank for my girlfriend and she loves it! It's smaller than I had expected, although I'm not sure what I was expecting anyways. The cat responds to larger coins such as quarters or nickels, but doesn't sense pennies or dimes as well. I found all you had to do was lightly press the button once the coin was placed, or push down on it as you place the coin and it should work. It doesn't always successfully take the smaller coins, but it has yet to fail in popping out and trying to grab it. When first using it, the box opens just a crack, then the cat freezes. After a few seconds, the cat resumes and takes the coin. I thought it was broken at first, but it seems programmed to do this, as the cat seems to be "peaking" out at the coin. My girlfriend loves the feature, so I wasn't going to complain about it. It also let's you reposition the coin really fast, should you have prematurely touched the button. If you are buying this as a gift, have a screw driver and 2 AA batteries ready, and a coin. It's not fun if you can't use it right away, since it'll just look like a japanese plastic box. Overall, this was a great buy and a great gift idea. After about ten tries the cat still pops out and meows, and it is taking the coins. I would highly recommend this gift, and will likely buy one for my sister for Christmas.

Cute Sneaky Little Cat
by K. Stancil (4 out of 5 stars)

The cutest Coin Bank (Toy) I've ever had! Before purchasing this product I was shopping around for a functional coin bank with some character, something I don't mind looking at on top of my desk. I was in dire need for a coin bank because, whenever I come, I always empty my pockets of coins and they either end up on my floor or pile up on a desk. I figured the Itazura Stealing Coin Cat would be the solution.

The Itazura - Kitty Bank is the cutest thing I've ever seen and every time I put a coin on its plate, the end result is always a smile. It operates on two AA batteries and operates like most plastic toys. This product is ideal to give to a young person or someone who's young at heart. The cons of this product for me is the capacity of coins this little toy can hold. It's able to take any change I've tried to put in there but nothing bigger than a quarter. It is plastic and it doesn't seem very durable. I would honestly just keep my quarters in my car or wallet for meters, laundry, arcade, etc.

Overall I knew what I was getting with the product and has met all of my expectations. I would like to emphasize that this product is more of a toy versus a traditional piggy bank. The price at ~$20 dollars is a little steep for something designed to promote saving money but it's indeed a novelty. I have yet to find a more adorable, non-traditional yet functional coin bank.

I won Christmas!
by Ivy Raine (5 out of 5 stars)
May 27, 2011

I won Christmas (competition to give the best gifts) with the help of this baby. My three year old niece was baffled at first, but then it turned into delight. No one in my family ever leaves her house with any change left in their pockets or purses because she has so much fun with this thing that it's impossible not to just give up all your change just to see her smile and giggle. Even months after Christmas, she still pulls it out to play with and show off to her friends, which is quite impressive considering the attention span of most toddlers. Small children, of course, should be supervised and taught how to treat this toy. I've seen it take some shakings but it did not break- I wouldn't push it, though. Overall, great buy, I believe she will enjoy it for years (or as long as it lasts).
