There are better ways to be visible on your bike
by ISTJ Guy (3 out of 5 stars)
November 24, 2012

As a bike commuter who often rides in the dark during winter months, I bought a pair of these Bike Brightz to improve my visibility to motorists with whom I share the road. I suppose they do that, but I am disappointed with the lack of brightness and the high cost, and I don't think they add that much to the various types of glowing or flashing bling that I have already purchased for this same purpose. In my opinion there are better ways to be visible on your bike at night, and if you are sharing the road with motorists, visibility can be a life-or-death proposition. The visibility from these lights is not what I would have expected from the studio photographs used to portray the product online.

Every nighttime bike commuter should start with a good quality "blinky" type rear flasher. (I have two rear flashers, one for my backpack, on on the bike). Rear flashers seem to me the most crucial piece of safety gear. Next in line is a very bright headlight (mine cost almost a hundred bucks, is rechargeable, and is worth every penny) so you can clearly see the road in dark areas and so you can clearly be seen by motorists you are approaching as they come out from side streets. There are many cheap headlights available and most are way too dim; a bright headlight is one area where it is worth splurging a little.

In addition to these basics, I also highly recommend the Flashflight SpokeLit Disc-O spoke lights available on Amazon; a pair of SpokLits on the front really light up your wheel in a bright and colorful way. Plus, I use a glowing reflective ankle strap available at Planet Bike BRT Strap Multi-Use LED Bicycle Safety Light to really catch the attention of motorists who are following me. Finally, go crazy with the 3M reflective tape available on this site; you can put this tape on your helmet, your backpack, the frame of your bike, even on your biking gloves.

Only after investing in these other, much-more-visible accessories, would I even consider going with the blue Bike Brightz - and, as I said, the visibility improvement from them is not very great. Unlike other bike lighting products, Bike Brightz shine light on the gray pavement instead of directly into the motorists' eyes. (The reflective floor used in the product photos makes them look much more visible than they are against a dark road surface.) Automotive headlights and bright street lights tend to wash them out so that they are of little use in traffic.

Needs improvement.

Nice light, easy install, exactly what I was looking for BUT, the battery door was a real bear to unlatch. Then once the batteries are in there, boy are they in there. I wanted to see how easily they'd come back out. I could not get them to just "pop out" and I had to go get a flat head screwdriver and pry the dang things out.

Good product with societal complications.

Lit up my bike great however I'd advise anyone who prefers not to be pulled over not to purchase blue. I was biking home and got pulled over I mention to the officer that I spoke to a State Trooper and he said it was legal. After speaking to dispatched he found out I was right yet I was biking on the wrong side of the road which he would most likely not have pulled me over for in the first place. After a friendly conversation I didn't receive a ticket but this product does invite police harrassment. So buy the product in a different color.

Went to a camping and saw many children with these fun lights. I am very impressed and it completed my son's vision. Easy to install and best part they take only 2 AAA batteries. They are super fun and he can't wait to take his bike out tonight!

Fun but cheap quality not worth $14.99!
by A. Carlberg (3 out of 5 stars)

I agree that the quality of these lights is not worth the $14.99. I would be willing to pay $7-8 tops. The zip ties are cheap. One broke immediately after my son put it move the light to another bike/scooter or if one breaks. The casing and battery door are delicate and, again, not the sturdy type of equipment I would have expected. A rubber pad is included to cushion between the light and the bike, but it isn't sticky! You just kind of hold it there while you are attaching the zip ties, hoping it doesn't move. It has already shifted on my son's bike. Very strange not to make it adhere to the light. Haven't had long enough to say anything about the battery life, but if it is very short, that's another con. It just appears as though they tried to make a product as CHEAPLY as possible and charge top dollar for it.

It is fun for a little kid and will be useful for our evening adventures now that it gets dark so early. If the zip ties were sturdier and the pad affixed, I might give it higher rating. Unfortunately, my other son wants one now that he saw his brother's, so I'm stuck paying 14.99 for another. Otherwise I would not buy again and would look into a less expensive type or something better quality.

As someone who rides in the dark every night, I wanted to have my bike lit up so there is less risk of me getting hit by a car. I bought this and other lights and I absolutely LOVE them. I feel safer having them and people driving definitely see me. Most definitely recommend.

Be Seen fro the Side
by mtcworld (4 out of 5 stars)

More than once I have come to a Stop sign at night and had the right of way only to have a car start into the intersection because they didn't see my bike. There are a number of short term solutions to light wheels or the frame, but this lights projects down and forward and is easily visible from the side. One continuous setting and three strobe settings including one that will probably cause seizures. :-)

Cheaply made
by lolly (2 out of 5 stars)

Did not last more than a year and the casing is cheap- i would have gladly paid double or more for well built lights with lithium rechargable batteries

The lights were bright when they worked but just cheaply mad
