Fairly Nice After a Little Tweakingby RoadiJeff (4 out of 5 stars)

Fairly nice. I bought this to use as a smoker attachment for my 5650 grill. Two things wrong with that were the holes on the legs of the 5650 did not line up and I had to drill them out a bit to get the bolts to slide through. I suppose that's more of a problem with the 5650 and not this. See the pics.
The other problem, which has been mentioned in several reviews, is that the spacers are way too short, unless you don't mind your smoker attachment mounted at a downward angle. I read in one review that you can call their customer service and they will send you the correct length spacers. I made some at work and they work fine. 1-3/4" length made mine level. You'll also need to get two 2-1/2" length bolts. The 2" ones that are shipped with the smoker will not be long enough.
I just finished mounting it to my 5650 grill. I will update my review if the paint starts peeling prematurely or some other problem occurs later on.
Edit: I called Char-Griller CS after I wrote this review and ordered the correct length spacers. They took close to two weeks to arrive but they came with two 2-1/2" bolts and two 1-3/4" spacers, which makes the smoker box nice and level when attached to the grill. No charge for the parts, you just have to give them the serial # that can be found on the back of the smoker. The pic below shows one of the original spacers that comes with the unit and the replacement that I just received. I seasoned it, according to the instructions, and hopefully no paint peeling.
Missing Hardware

This review "could not be submitted in it's current form"?
Much of the hardware was missing. I called Char Griller's customer service and they seemed indifferent to my frustration. I'm expecting replacement hardware in the next ten days or so. What's the point of fast shipping if the product is incomplete? I'm headed down to the hardware store to get my own parts as the Char-Griller seems to be incapable of meeting customer needs.
DO NOT ATTACH THIS TO THE DOUBLE PLAY MODEL #5650 BEFORE READING THIS (YOU NEED ADDITIONAL PARTS FRO

I purchased the Char-Griller E22424 to be used as a Side Fire Box for my Char-Griller Double Play Model #5650. The SPACER TUBES that come with this product aren't suitable for attachment to 5650, but to another model. So if you use the spacer tubes that are shipped with the E22424, the side fire box will bend downward at a severe angle. I fashioned some tubes from leftover rain gutter parts to make it work. I called customer service to inquire about this issue, and they admitted that they don't include parts to attach to the 5650, but there is nothing about this in the instructions (she said something about the parts being sent of be used as a Table Top Grill, which doesn't make sense, since you don't need spacer tubes if you are buying this as a table top grill). They sent the correctly sized spacer tubes and they arrived within two days. Look at the picture to see the difference between the correct spacer tube with the one that is being held next to it (the one that you will get in the original shipment).
I hope people will read this before attaching, otherwise you will either have a side fire box that angles diagonally to the ground (not level), or you will be waiting two more days before you can use it.
Horrible Customer Service at CHAR-GRILL NOT AMAZON.

This is towards Char-Grill not amazon. This item lost all it's paint on the first use. not in one spot the entire top part and back it all bubble up and flake off within 10 mins. Per Char-Grill they would not warranty it if you used more than 15 little briskets to warm it with and we used wood and charcoal. So since they say we did it wrong it's not warranty. Well guess you really need to only use for hot dogs cause anything else it will heat up to much! Worst customer service more shocking than anything! Frustrated consumer!
Amazon did everything as normal good service and shipping.

Nice little grill ! I was a little concerned when reading the reviews about the paint . I also have the Char-Griller 5050 unit , and in the directions on the 5050 it says to put a lite coat of cooking oil on it before use , I used Crisco , I also used it on the 2-2424 and have not had a problem at all .
High quality portable grill

This is an extremely nice, high-quality portable barbecue grill from CharGriller at an amazingly affordable price. The assembly was easy due to the precision machining of the few assembly parts, and the instructions were good. My wife and I assembled it in about 30 minutes. The grill is made from good quality cast iron, and the grates are very good quality thick cast iron. I seasoned the pit and grates with bacon grease (as per the recommendation on the separate instructions page, rather than the manual which said vegetable oil) and then fired the pit up according to the instructions to "burn it in". I have been grilling for 40 years and I don't know why it never occurred to me to use bacon grease to season a pit. It does the necessary seasoning and protective coating and imparts a wonderful flavor profile. I used a metal temperature gauge inside the pit after the coals were ready to keep the fire at the recommended temperatures, and adjusted the dual vents accordingly. We grilled steaks later that evening and they were wonderful. Fully assembled the pit weighs around 40 lbs so it's no lightweight. With proper care this pit should last many years.
EXCELLENT SMOKER!!!!!!

The ONLY reason this fire box is getting 4 out of 5 stars, instead of 5, is because the paint started curling up and peeling off on the first use (see picture section). Also, there was a small dent in the body which kind of irked me, but it in no way hampered performance. If you're concerned about how pretty your smoker is, this one may not be for you. However, if your purpose in adding this to your existing grill is to have smoking perfection, THIS IS THE ONE!!!!!!!
For years, I've had to hound my husband to keep adding coals to the fire to keep the temperature up when smoking. It was usually all he could do to keep it at 200º. Every time I walked by this smoker, it was maintaining 250º to 260º. The installation to our Char-griller Duo was very easy. I was initially concerned over the lack of a gasket between the grill and the fire box, but I can tell you that not one bit of smoke escaped at the seams. Even the lids have excellent seals. I was exceptionally impressed with the performance.
I'm uploading some pictures. I highly recommend this addition to the Char-griller Duo!

Heavy duty but necessary!

Very impressed with the quality and stoutness of this little grill. I've got a smoker box on my main grill and it's not nearly this well built. I bought this as my RV grill and love the size and heavy duty design. It's either light weight and junk or heavy duty and built to last. I haven't found an in between with grills. I added a temp thermometer to mine. The rack doesn't adjust the coals but I haven't found a reason to with this grill. I use less coals to start and add if need be. Adjust the air in/out and you'll be fine.
A must have for your Char-Griller

I strictly use 12-14 inch oak splits in my fire-box so the first use the paint was gone on top. No biggie, good high heat paint and it is protected again. The slide out tray is nice for cleaning out the ash the next day. Now I hooked mine up to the CG Outlaw and when installed the fire-box was raised up to high on the air damper side. The spacers you get are exactly double the length that is necessary. Just cut em in half and your fire-box fits perfectly. I have cooked before on 1500 dollar Texas custom off-sets and I can safely say the grub that comes off my Char-Griller with the side fire-box is just as good. The trick is having a clean hot small burning fire. I prop the lid open about two inches the entire cook so my fire burns hot and clean and the pit stays 230-260 the entire time. I have to use maybe 2-3 more splits for the entire cook but it sure beats smoldering wood and ruining my meat. Practice and learn your pit and you will laugh all the way to the bank for not spending 1000's of dollars for the same results you get from your Char-Griller. One more thing, if your fire-box wears out, you just order another one and you are back in the saddle!!

The grill did come with some issues. The spacers aren't long enough so there was a hang to the side box, the sliding ash tray was not welded properly and the paint totally chipped on top after one use. After reading some reviews with some of the same issues I contacted Amazon which sent out a replacement at no extra charge and also the manufacturer which is sending out longer spacers at no charge and they also gave some tips. They said to season and oil your grill and side box inside and out with some vegetable oil upon first use. Continue to spray with vegetable oil after every use. Don't let the main grill get over 250 while smoking to make sure the firebox isn't getting too hot. I will do an update once I get the new spacers for the replacement box and fire it up.
