As a functional umbrella, it is fantastic. It is spring operated, but the release action is nice and smooth, not jerky like you get with cheap umbrellas. The size is on the bigger side so it has ideal coverage, and it feels durable. The handle has some good detail, but not enough so that you can't tell it's obviously plastic at a medium distance. This may seem like a negative, but it's good for college students so campus police don't automatically assume you plan to stab somebody.
Great umbrella. I also have the katana version and I always get compliments.

I got this for my wife because she fenced in college. We are always getting new umbrellas because she loses them, but she likes this so much that she doesnt forget and leave it on the train!

I haven't used it yet, and frankly, I don't care if it breaks. When I took it out of the box, my boyfriend was soooooooo totally jealous.
Update 12/17/2012 - it still worked great, until last week when my boyfriend lost it after he borrowed it to "go to the store." But it is solid, but without a top vent for heavy wind it would have probably gone inside out in a big storm. Just a thought.

recipient loved the gift as she loves interesting umbrellas. The handle is plastic, but is sturdy. I didn't get to use it, so i can't say how it will perform in either windy or really rainy conditions.
Great whimsical fun!

Fear no storm with this Saber Umbrella and face the rain with a smile. I love it when a common utilitarian item is imbued with a dash of humor.

Novelty with Some Flaws

Amusing umbrella. Just two things annoy me about it. The sheath and the decorative piece on the hilt. It feels weird to draw a sabre-style umbrella from over the shoulder. Shame the sheath is not set up to allow the sword-brella to hang from the waist. As for the hilt, the decorative portion popped out. Guess mine was not glued properly or something.
