This didn't meet my needs BUT I still consider it a great product

This didn't meet my needs BUT I still consider it a great product. I purchased Vallejo grey primer to use as a primer on my unpainted, plaster of Paris (gypsum), Christmas houses. I have been painting these types of houses since the mid 90s and am always seeking to refine the process for a more excellent job so I figure I would try it on my houses.

First of all I understand this is basically made for an air sprayer and for plastic models or non-porous items. I brushed it on plaster of Paris. It went on smoothly and I liked the look of it after it was allowed to dry and it felt nice and smooth. But I found out as I started to paint the houses I preferred the drag and absorption that my acrylic paints had straight on the gypsum rather than the smoother application of the paints with the primer on the house. I can see from working with plastic models as a kid that this primer would work great on such items, the primer just wasn't right for my needs.

Therefore I still give it 5 stars I think it deserves

Very Good Waterborne Primer
by Robin H (5 out of 5 stars)

I have found this to be a very good waterborne primer for my modeling needs. To be sprayed it'll have to be thin, and care must be taken as it will dry on the tip of your airbrush needle. You'll just have to pick it off the tip. It'll also dry in your cup quickly making cleanup more difficult, but this is to be expected with primer. Highly concentrated isopropyl alcohol seems to dissolve it, even when dry. This bottle will last you a good while, and it can be applied with a brush straight if you desire.

Like None Other...

If you haven't used a Vallejo Surface Primer yet, then do yourself a favor and grab all of the colors you want, starting with the black and grey first. Goes on super smooth through an airbrush and is also standard brush able to rim bases and such. This product does contain Polyurethane, so make sure you are properly ventilated *and* wearing a respirator while spraying.

All in all, the best primer on the market for miniatures and models.

The best brand, and best all purpose color.

This is my most used primer for miniatures. I was glad to find it in this size. I do refill my dropper bottles with it, since they are small and easier to fill my airbrush with. This flows well through my airbrush, but must be cleaned more frequently than paint. Do not thin this. Also do wait 24hrs to set. I use a .4 needle for priming miniatures. The color is grey, but it is a very light grey. This primer will also come off easily. If you start paying and want to start again, simple green and a toothbrush work well. Once painted and glazed it's very durable. If you live in a dry state, use flow improver as well, otherwise it dries too quickly and gives you major problems.

Very bad

This stuff just not spray well. I've thinned it, reduced it, retarded it, etc. and nothing helps. The Vallejo black primer on the other hand sprays like.m a charm. Every time I use the gray, it ends in a complete mess. Airbrush plugs almost immediately. Maybe I got a bad batch. I'm throwing out this almost full bottle.

Gunpla builder

I've been needing something more precise for priming my model kits than the spraycan primer, which has produced good results in the past. However, smaller intricate parts are hard to get without getting runs or pooling. I like this product so far. No word on final painting results yet, but i like how this sprays through the airbrush at about 20-25 psi. I did find it works better to thin it down a bit with some water based reducer. Also, the gray is a very light shade, and will be hard to see on white parts. I remedied this with a few drops of black mixed in and it works great. Very pleased (so far)

If you are painting miniatures you really need a primer, and this one's very good

Love this primer. It sticks really well. You can use this through an airbrush or just shake it up, pour a little into a container and then paint it on old school style.

The color is a light grey so it really goes well with almost any kind of paint scheme you want to do. And for the price it's amazing, you only need a tiny bit per mini and you'll get good coverage.

Not bad primer, but more white than grey.

It is decent primer but for me it's uses are limited on my models. It is nearly white in color. Since nearly all model cars are molded in white it is almost impossible to see it going on. Cannot tell if I have good coverage or missing spots and I often end up overspraying. Was expecting actual 50% grey. So really I can only use it if I have something molded in color or black.

Very disappointed considering how much I spent. Would have been better off with a can of automotive primer for 4 bucks.

Great paint...but,

Seems very durable in my limited use, but I wasn't very pleased with the condition that I received it in. Luckily, it was the only thing in the package and the spill was contained in the bag.

Great Model Primer
by Russell Brown (5 out of 5 stars)

This primer is great for models It goes on very easy depending in the size needle you use in your airbrush. I use a number 3 in my airbrush. It also works great in a mini gravity spray gun, which I use a lot on bigger projects.

If you are a model builder, this primer is a must have.
