It's perfect for him to keep in his backpack
by George Jaros (4 out of 5 stars)

Got this for my son when he earned his Arrow of Light and crossed into Boy Scouts. It's perfect for him to keep in his backpack. It's small enough, but has most of the essentials for a Scout survival pack. It's not going to keep you for weeks, but a night or two, or minor emergency it'll be fine. The thing I liked about this compared to other kits is that it has room to add some additional small items. You can supplement some of the first aid supplies and it'll have everything that the other kits in this price range have and more.

This is a great kit to add onto
by ClK Family (4 out of 5 stars)

To me Bear Grylls gets a bad rap. Gerber brings a pretty decent product to the market although they contract out of china which I'm not happy about. So does the other top companies I see so many prepper's raving about like SOG, Schrade, Smith and Wesson, Kershaw, Spyderco, Cold Steel, Mora and Camillus. None of these knives are made here in the United States. Only Ontario and Ka-bar Knives are worthy of the praise & title of "Made in the USA" with that said if your going to buy these products that are not made here in the USA stop complaining about it and just don't buy it. Now onto the review.... A few things I like about this kit is the fire starter, mini multi tool, signal mirror, fishing and sewing kit, waterproof matches. The snare wire and hand saw are cheesy at best but I left them in the kit for now and will replace soon enough. I did however add a few things from other kits I felt were better quality such as the space blanket. I took out BG's space blanket and replaced it with Adventure Medicals Heatsheet because it better quality and it has ripstop capabilities plus it's big enough for two people. Also I replace the BG flashlight with a Pico flashlight because it's LED and still small and compact. I changed BG's nylon rope with 550 para cord which as we all know is much better. A few things I added which were not in the kit was a roll of duct tape(AMK), lighter, mini compass, wetfire cubes, basic first aid, chapstick, floss(small amount) and 3 safety pins. Also I removed the emergency whistle cord and used 550 para cord to attach on the outside of the bag with the whistle. Now the bag is pretty tight with these additions I have made and I'm going to add a knife to the whistle since it will not fit inside of the bag but I always carry one in my bag anyway so that is why there is no hurry to add one. These were just things I felt I needed for my kit that I keep with me at all times. If Gerber put all of these things in this kit the price would be outrageous to the consumer. So if your thinking about about buying this kit then buy it with the goal of adding and subtracting from this kit. Your probably never going to have everything you need to survive but at least you have enough to build on.

Not what I Expected
by CW (3 out of 5 stars)

I have one of Bear's knives and it seems to be of a decent quality, but this little package has me concerned for a number of reasons. I will comment on each of the contents. I don't mean to be critical, but there are better alternatives.

Stuff sack with whistle: This is actually quite nice. Decent nylon construction and signal instructions on the back. A small (loud) whistle is on the zipper pull.

Inner "watertight" pouch. Nice concept, poor quality. The plastic on this is brittle and mine actually came with a large crack in the bottom. Thankfully I have some proper waterproof pouches that are much softer and more durable.

Mini multi-tool: Gerber Clutch. This sells for about $15, but it's really difficult to open and use. I like the spring loaded pliers, but the rest needs to be worked-in with oil. The tools on it are very, very tiny. I would suggest the Leatherman Style CS. Much better. [...]

Gerber Fire Starter: Appears to be sound. Once the black coating is off, it performs like the rest.

Paracord: 5 ft. Not enough. If you can afford the weight in your pack, bring 25-50 ft. This will cost about 3 oz, but worth it.

Whistle: Fine, but emergency only. The end does not stay on because you can reverse it for a different sound. Could be very easy to lose making the whistle worthless.

Mini light: Terrible. It worked for less than one second when I switched it on and does not work anymore. I can't think of anything more important to have in your kit other than a knife and compass. Speaking of which, there isn't a compass.

Snare wire: About 16" of really thin copper. You would be hard pressed to catch anything more than rodents with this thickness. It seems to be about the thickness of stripped phone wire.

Emergency blanket: Same as any. Good to have, but doesn't last long.

Twine: Looks to be about a meter of twine 2-3x thicker than floss. This can be useful for very small jobs, but it's so thin.

Emergency tinder: One. 2-3 would be better in case your fire goes out.

Waterproof matches: 8 in total with striking board. Completely sealed which is good.

Emergency saw: I have not heard very good things about these in general, but it looks to be a little thicker than most.

Sewing kit: 5 colors about 12" each of thread. Two buttons, one needle and a safety pin.

Signaling mirror: Has instructions on the back. Useful.

Fishing kit: Far better than nothing. A few meters of thin line, 4 swivels, 4 hooks & 4 sinkers.

Priorities of Survival Pocket Guide: This could be useful for someone who does not know how to build shelter, find food, water or self-rescue.

In all, this little kit has a bit of everything, but it would only last a few days if you don't know how to survive otherwise. If you built your own kit separately, it would cost a little more, but you would also be able to include much higher quality items. However, in an emergency, this would be far better than nothing. However, I had expected higher quality from Gerber and Bear.

50% price increase.. are you kidding

Don't know why Gerber raised the price from $33 to $52. I bought this kit for hiking a couple of years ago but 50% price increase is ridiculous. It's worth $20 or less. The kit itself is ok, most items are quite small including the multi-tool. Day hike ok, survival forget it.

Compass, please...!
by Daniel Jacob (4 out of 5 stars)

I agree with the reviewer that this kit is sorely missing a compass. The included survival guide includes information on how to determine direction using your watch or materials you can find on the ground. But both methods require that you take the time to get set up, and then you get a crude bearing. If you're on the go, what you want most is a quick check to make sure you're going in the right direction. Add a small bubble compass-- you'll be glad you did.

The snare and the fishing stuff are, as other reviewers have noted, wholly inadequate. You could swap out those things with better gear.

The included bag is just roomy enough to supplement with a few other things. Add a small net that can be used to trap fish in streams. Throw in a very small roll of gauze (enough to wrap around a limb a few times) as well as a few bandages and some alcohol wipes. Maybe a couple ibuprofen. The bag included with this kit can fit those things.

I give this kit 4 stars instead of 3 because of its portability. It will fit very easily in a glove compartment or the wheel well where you store your spare tire. You can throw this into your travel luggage (just be sure it's not a carry-on!) The convenience of all of these things being prepared in a kit with its own bag makes it a great starter for those who want to just click and buy without spending a few hours reviewing each component for the best one.

This is a good starter kit if you truly have nothing else. Just be sure to add a SMALL compass to your cart before you check out.

Everything but the kitchen sink

This kit has a little bit of everything, and at a decent price. If you were looking to toss one of these into a hiking bag, you could be reasonably assured that you will be prepared for most things outside of a full blown zombie apocalypse. In fact, it probably prepares you for several situations slightly less probably than a zombie apocalypse. Better safe than sorry, right?

The downside of this product is the complete lack of organization. It is of little value to have a tool and be unable to find it. This thing is the mom purse of survival; if you dig around long enough you will find what you are looking for. For this disorganization I took off a star. You will probably want to buy some means of organizing this mess.

Overall the quality looks good, and as I said this gives you the ability to be prepared for whatever comes your way. Worth buying so long as you know what you are getting.

This is a nice kit

I have the Gerber kit and love almost everything in it, but the knife would be better if it had a regular blade as the serated blade makes it difficult to do certain things with, but I have a regular and backup knife for what this knife would be used for. Other than that everything is what is needed for emergency situations.

nicely detailed

I got this as a christmas present for a good friend who is entirely capable of getting lost in his own apartment, and dying of starvation. Given that the state and local governments let him have a license, car, and minimal supervision, it seemed appropriate to purchase this, should he get lost on his way to burger king, and have to start a fire in order to not freeze to death, while trying to figure out how to use those buttons that trigger the crosswalk. he was entirely pleased and decided immediately that he was now wilderness prepared, while asking me if the wire saw was a tourniquet. I informed him that it technically could be, and he was overjoyed that he was so clever. Very shortly thereafter, he cut himself with it. Now that his blood has been cleaned up, and he's been instructed only to use this in case of emergency, and that being life threatening, not, "I'm going for a milkshake, what if I encounter bears?" I think the survival kit is going to hold up just fine. A+, would survival again.

Don't Forget This in Your Car!
by Kristyn Lynn Prisk (5 out of 5 stars)
September 28, 2015

I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend's birthday. It arrived quickly and was packed up all nicely. The kit is exceptional, although it is difficult to start a fire with the fire-starter, but that might just be because I'm inept at striking metal against metal. This kit is awesome and is definitely worth the money, however, don't leave it in your car when going out into the wilderness with your boyfriend to go mushroom hunting. He was over the moon impressed with this gift and spent hours looking at each part individually, and promptly left it in the glove box of his car right before we got completely lost in the woods for hours. This is doubly embarrassing because we were both raised in these woods, as well....and then it started to rain....hard. I will tell you one thing, though, while we were stumbling around in the woods, proclaiming how we were going to die, and tripping over hidden logs on the ground, and getting soaked all the way down to our underwear, we kept thinking of things in the kit that we could have used. Trust me, a kit like this is essential if you plan on going on a hike and have a short attention span.

Good luck all!
