Awesome Blade!
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)
January 31, 2017

My first cold steel product, but definitely not my last. Full tang 1055 carbon steel should seal the deal right away, but it's not the only selling point. The Kydex-like sheath is perfect, and the grommets are spaced perfectly for lashing the sheath to MOLLE webbing with some 550 cord, as I've done on my plate carrier. The handles are hex wrench removable so you can cord wrap the handle, but I find that the knuckle grooves are spaced perfectly for my palm knuckles and fingertips. There's also a finger notch right behind the blade bevel to increase grip while your swinging the knife. Also, the baked on finish is excellent. The only downsides to me are the overall size of the knife and the blade grind.
1.The whole thing is 12 inches long, so it's kind of overkill and oversize if you're looking for a tactical knife. Personally, I like it.
2. It says in the description that the blade is 7 inches. From the middle of the hilt to the hilt to the tip is 7", but the sharpened edge is only about 5 1/2."

Bottom line, if you want a big tactical knife to wow your buddies, split wood, carry into battle, or throw Benjamin Martin style, just buy it. You can't go wrong with cold steel.

Satisfaction!!!

Ordered this in October been using it for almost six months is my bush knife now. This is a serious knife it takes a real good beating and will still retain a nice edge. It's made of 1055 carbon spring steel, so you almost can't tear it up. It will chip it's a hardened blade so I probably wouldn't be batoning concrete. The only complaint I had was the upper spur of the tang had to be removed. Feels so much more functional and comfortable now that it's removed and still locks tight in the kydex sheath with the bottom spur. And at the price you can mod it to make it your own it's not like cutting a $300 knife up, but I bet it'll take everything and more than that $300 knife because you're not scared to use or abuse it. I added a teklok to the back of mine to clip onto my packs or tac belt. Would purchase again if I ever had to but I doubt that's going to happen. I only give it 4 stars Because unless you remove the spur it's sort of uncomfortable

Good heavy duty beater knife
by Hunters Paradox (5 out of 5 stars)

Cons: Large heavy blade. Steel on the softer side, making the necessity for resharpening more often. The handle scales are slightly uncomfortable for heavy or long periods of use.

Pros: Next thing to indestructible, finger choil (indent) at bottom of blade is useful for fine detail work, cross guard makes it nice for stabbing into objects. Sheath is is one of the best I have ever seen on a knife, holds securely and has a nylon snap retention strap at top of handle.

I have been a fan of cold steel for a number of years, with this being on of the first knives that i had purchased made by them. While this knife if far from perfect, it does nicely fit the niche of strong, durable, budget knife with a great drop down sheath. If you are looking for a heavy duty chopper, that needs only occasional TLC in the form of sharpening then this is your knife.

As mentioned above the handle scales leave a little to be desired and while some may want the complete package they are fairly easy to modify with a little sandpaper and some glue. The issues i had with mine were two fold; the scales shifting in my hand and a few hot spots that made heavy work uncomfortable. Simply remove the screws on either side, put a small amount of water on the metal side and gorilla glue on plastic side (thin coat in the middle) screw back together and let sit for 24 hours. Clear any excess glue with sandpaper as well as sanding down any hot-spots. Alternately you could do a pracord wrap, which should be fairly easy with cross guard at the base of the blade.

Can't beat it for price, but has annoyances
by Some Useless Geek (4 out of 5 stars)

[Supplement: Okay, I like this thing enough to get four of them --- so far. I have one on each of my two grab-n-go bags (day and night operations), one on a night utility vest, and one sitting on my desk waiting to be assigned to something.]

This blade gets all kinds of attention from the "frugal" among us. It's a nice compromise of size, shape, weight, length, and cost. Comes out of the box hair-trimming sharp, with a blade hard enough to last for a while.

The scales aren't the best; they have a really annoying shape and almost no surface texture to resist slippage in sweaty hands. Since this blade starts out life as a press stamping there are some corners on the guards you'll want to smooth out. Also, most people round out the choil a little to make it more comfortable to choke up on the blade for fine cutting and hacking.

The real hassle with this thing is the scabbard. What a disappointment. I spent a lot -- and I mean, a LOT -- of time on my two GI Tanto scabbards trying to get them loose enough to present properly. [One of the blades was binding at the flat near the choil. Ground it down a trifle and the presentation was much smoother. Still not Kydex.]

I have modified all of mine to remove the upper finger guard, add jimping, sharpen the top drop edge, round the choil, sharpen the rear point to a skullcrusher, and add decent grippage with built-up scales sealed off with heat-shrinkable tubing. It all comes together and it all works.

Check out YouTube and Vimeo and such for videos where folks have shown how they've modified these blades to get some ideas. But one thing is for sure -- you ain't gonna beat this knife for this kind of dough, no how.

GREAT knife for the money!
by Doby Pilgrim (5 out of 5 stars)

The description was funny to say the least! No, my knife didn't come with a bobber and I doubt that it will float!!! But it came razor band hair popping sharp, like every other Cold Steel knife I have owned. Simple construction, and I found the grip scales a lot more comfortable than I thought they would be. I have some black Paracord, and just may wrap them for fun. Or even better, practice my stippling skills, maybe. Do I recommend this knife? Heck yeah, especially at about thirty bucks delivered! Also, this thing was a lot more compact and light than I thought it would be. I guess I have gotten too used to big Bowie knives lately, lol. Just buy one. I very much doubt that you will be disappointed...unless something is wrong with you! Sheath is great at this price range. Just remember to press forward when removing or re-sheathing it, since the plastic will dull the edge easily.

Update...Still five stars for me. There is one change and it may be a positive. Blade is now marked with a rolled on paint. Kind of tacky compared to being stamped in on my previous one. But very easily covered by simply using some Super Black. The grips scales are textured better than my first one as well. Overall still a great knife. And at under $22 delivered, a fantastic value. Arrived shaving sharp of course. I stropped it for two minutes and it's a big old razor now. Going right in my truck's glove box for when I need it

Get two at this price.

Aged 56 years young, hiking camping and so forth since age seven, owned and carried fixed blades since age 11. Have owned all the U.S. Military knives, favorite was USAF 'survival' model second was Kabar. Current fave is a Cold Steel Bushman, older one with a leather sheath and paracord wrap on the handle. Awesome times six for my use.
This is my favorite back up to my bushman. For dirty work like cleaning up lots that have been dumped on or cutting bait this is my oyster. Gave away a Becker BK7, and a Cold Steel SRK in narrowing down my knives in this size range. After using all for at least a year.
Sharpen the false edge and you have three edges with you. Huge for me. YMMV. Do not recommend throwing this blade, sure it's fun and it is sturdy but not how I treat mine. Would strongly recommend against batoning this knife as in splitting kindling.
Anyone looking for a blade in this size range may want to consider this offering. The grips make it four star but they come off real easy. A paracord wrap ain't bad. Sheath is reliable and sturdy, only had mine a few years but it seems to be holding up. At this price maybe get two, sharing is caring.
Not big enough for serious chopping but it will do a little chopping. No opinion on worth as a weapon except to say we prefer not to be tagged with one of these. I'm a hiker, hunter, cook, camping enthusiast and for me this is a great knife.

Helluva Knife!
by Justin P. Borim (5 out of 5 stars)
November 9, 2015

So...Let me start by saying that I'm an outdoorsman and gun enthusiast and I expect a lot from the gear I use in the field. This weekend I participated in a WMA wild boar hunt on Ossabaw Island, GA. Ossabaw is a 9000 sq acre barrier island with a lot of low wetlands. My hunt team downed a 90 lb boar 1.5 miles from camp. Dragging this hog through the terrain was not an option so we looked for a length of wood strong enough to make a carry stick. Well, all the wood on the ground was saturated and rotten. The only option was to cut a small, 4 inch thick tree down. After realizing that I left my hatchet at camp I decided to try my Cold Steel Tanto. I went to work on the tree and after 20 or so swings the job was done.... WOW! That little 7" blade went through the hard wood tree like an axe! I then cut the other side to create an 8' length. After finishing the two cuts the blade looked like new and kept it's perfect factory edge! It didn't even loose any of it's black finish...AMAZING! Kudos, Cold Steel!

Used this to process tons of firewood!
by Ara Baghdassarian (5 out of 5 stars)
December 26, 2017

Purchased this back in 2013 for no particular reason. Well I just got back from 5 days of winter backpacking and I took this beast with me. GLAD I DID. At 1lb the weight is certainly not negligible but this knife earned it's keep and then some. My partner was supposed to bring an axe which he forgot, so I ended up using this to hack up and process fallen trees (apx 4-7" in diameter) into firewood. Over the course of 3 days I probably processed about a half cord of firewood--seriously. The blade held up admirably but the coating did start to fade in the high use areas and did dull a bit by the end of the second day, also the handle started getting loose and I didn't have any way to tighten the screws (hex bit) but no problem I just removed the handle and gave the blade a paracord wrap. Overall an axe would have been more comfortable but honestly I was amazed at how versatile this knife is and how good it performed in lieu of an axe, 10/10!

High value. Customizable
by FuzzyPuppy (5 out of 5 stars)

One of the best in class full size economy knives. The secure-ex sheath can be lashed to a pack, an armored vest carrier or anything else. High carbon, impact resistant 1055, non-stainless steel is used here. Wipe the blade after use and a little oil on the sharp edge for storage. Perfect for finishing mods and personalization. I ground the spine flat to use a ferro rod fire starter and ground one of the quillon/cross guard tangs off for better grip. Good looking, striking profile tanto blade. Survival, camping, bushcraft uses are what this is made for. You can throw it if you know what you are doing. Throwing knives is a skill and sport that requires practice. These are perfect for gifts, the tanto blade is impressive and strong. Buy two and give one to a friend.

Love this knife!
by Terrahawk (5 out of 5 stars)

Tough knife! Haven't taken it out into the bush, but use this to process wood in my back yard while I teach myself some fire-making and basic wood-processing skills, takes a beating from one log into another to split wood very well. For the price its fantastic! I keep one for the yard and bought 2 more to put in bug-out bags. I have recommended them to friends. Its a tank of a knife!
***Update*** After using one of these for about a year, its still going strong. The one thing I should've mentioned to be careful of, is the top edge above the tip is pretty sharp, so watch out if you're grasping or pushing on the knife in this area. Good for offense/defense, I suppose, but if you grab that area rendering wood it might cut you. Overall still thrilled with this as an inexpensive, reliable utility knife. Sharpens up easily, being decent carbon steel.
