Good kits and great customer servive
by AnonLA (4 out of 5 stars)

Update: I was able to contact the manufacturer of these kits, Adventure Medical Kits, and ask them to replace the two broken compasses that came with my two ordered kits. They responded to my email next day and shipped me replacement compasses the day after. They were very helpful and polite and the new compasses arrived quickly and were perfectly operational. Changing my review to four stars based on the great customer service provided by the company.

I am so disappointed. This looks like a great little survival kit, with items that would actually be useful if you were lost in the wilderness. Unfortunately one of the key items, the compass does not work. I bought two kits and neither of the compasses in either kit works - they don't point due north when laid level, actually they don't even move - the pointer is inert. I know they are just button compasses, but I expected them to be functional rather than just for show.

Excellent product for value

The S.O.L. Scout kit a very good value for what you get! The blanket is top of the line for this type of item and is much better than the typical mylar blankets that sell for a buck. The mirror is a very high quality item as well although a slightly larger model would be a little better. The Tinder-Quik are fantastic tinder (which I like to much that I buy it in bulk packs of 100 pcs). The duct tape roll is nice and works better than rolling your own over an old credit card (with the resulting tape losing some of its sticking power when used. The whistle is decent but not the very best option; it was likely chosen because it's cheap and of course it's flat, allowing it to fit in a smaller kit. The sparker for lighting the tinder seems to be a bit lower quality than the older Spark-Lite included in many of the older AMK kits. The fishing kit isn't going to do much for you- it seems to have been included based on market research instead of survival value. The jury is out on the compass. These cheap small compasses seem to vary a lot from sample to sample. Mine points north-ish when tested at home where I know true north, but it's fairly vague and slow to settle. I wouldn't trust it too far without another means to verify in the field.

I am on the fence about the 'dry bag'. It does seem to be air-tight. I haven't submerged it in water nor do I intend to so do. It's pretty small, to the point that if you remove the contents to inspect them it's tricky to get everything back in. I suppose there's no reason for it to be any larger than it must be to fit the included gear but if you hoped to customize the kit by adding a few more items this could be problematic. Also I'm not sure how durable the bag is going to be. The orange side seems sturdy but the plastic window side feels a bit thin. It's hard to say if it will stand up to long term carry.

Still, I think this is a great value. The mirror is worth at least $5-$6, the blanket at least another $5. By the time you source a whistle and the fire gear and something to store it in you'll probably be over the $16 that the Scout costs. The Ritter PSP is a little better deal with a little higher quality gear but it's a bit more expensive. At this price point I don't think you could go wrong with the Scout.

Nice little kit

Nice little kit with basic needs for building a fire and staying warm when stuck
**update** 9/24/2017

I have had some time in the backwoods with this kit, and it is a great starter kit! The fire striker that is included will start the tinder ( you will have to expand the tinder by pulling it apart into a cotton ball type) the emergency blanket is large enough to build a pup tent with to stay dry for a day or two, possibly longer if you are careful not to tear it, and block the ends it will keep in heat from your body at the same time, whistle is loud enough to be heard to alert rescue of general location. Signal mirror is small but does its job. Great addition to BOB bag, get home bag, hiking pack, car, camping etc. Or to build existing first aid/ emergency kit.

Would buy again!!

Useful, but needs some tender loving care.

There are three items here of real value for survival: the water proof bag, the emergency blanket and the whistle. I bought these for my two 13-year old girls to take with them when we go hiking in case we get separated and they get lost. They have the big orange blanket and the whistle to help us find them and to keep off the weather. The other stuff like fire starting and fishing is cute, but inadequate if needed, especially without training and a good knife. I dumped this stuff and added a decent LED flashlight, a 12-hour glow stick and a spare battery to make this useful for a lost kid, who might have to spend a night alone in the woods. It's light and easy to carry in a small backpack, so it's easy to bring, even on a afternoon walk in the woods, as well as on a bigger adventure like an all day mountain hike. If Adventure Medical Kits reads this - they are welcome to my advice, i.e., add a flashlight and a 12 hour glow stick and ditch the fishing kit.

This is a nice compact kit. It comes in a decent waterproof bag. It does keep everything dry. The fire starter works surprisingly well.

I was very surprised at the quality of these kits. They are perfect to throw in your backpack, or in the car with the first aid kit. Everything you could need for survival situations (I'm a park ranger-no lie). Very happy with these kits!

Hopefully, will never need. But, as the saying goes, better to have and not need, then to need and not have. With as small, and as light, as this is, there is no reason not to have it in your pack. Now, is it the biggest, best, have ever thing to cover everything kind of kit? No. Is it better than nothing? Most definitely.

Love these little kits

Love these little kits. Some of the items I may not ever use, but you can always pull out anything you don't like and ad something else. The basic survival stuff (Rescue mirror, fire starter and tinder) are of a good quality. I take this with me when hiking / on snow shoes in the woods or parks. A bit of overkill perhaps but I would rather be over prepared than under prepared.....

Nice EDC kit. Any age should carry or have close.

Nice EDC (everyday carry) 1st Aid kit to place in yor pocket. Never know when you may need. May add a few items just for my preference but overall nice kit. Any age that has basic First Aid skills should have a small pack like this with them or close to them at all times.

The best all-around survival kit for the price

The best all-around survival kit for the price. I love the waterproof bag that it comes with and it also allows for some expansion to the kit if you choose to add more gear.
