I bought this April 2015. It gets used most every day for making smoothies. A couple weeks ago the based unit burned up while I was gone. When I returned home my entire house smelled like melted plastic smoke and after searching I found that this product was the source. When I looked at the base, it was charred. I am so thankful it didn't start my house on fire.

We contacted customer service at Cuisinart and thus far have not received a satisfactory response. The agent that read the email implied that we tampered with or tried to take the unit apart, which we did not.

Up until the unit burned, I LOVED this blender. I am hoping that customer service will stand behind their product.

I wanted to share this review to let others know about potential problems and a potential fire hazard.

sent it back

I tried to make marinara sauce, which ordinarily takes about 30-40 minutes start to finish, including all the chopping. It took over an hour just to sautee onions in a quarter cup of oil. and the thing has a 30 max cooking time so you have to keep adding minutes to it like a parking meter. the tomatoes took another couple hours just to get to a simmer...yes it was on high heat! if it would heat higher and faster it would be awesome. this would be little to no cleanup and a storage container for the leftovers. BUT it doesn't.

Good enough, great for soups, smoothies, good price
by Lynn Sloan (4 out of 5 stars)

I have always been curious about blenders that make soup, so when I needed a new blender, I did quite a bit of research. Granted, Vitamix is the Grand Dame, and it should be for the cost. Looking at reviews, no blender is perfect. So I bought this one at what I thought was a great price. Note: Amazon had it retailing for $290 and I got it for $79 in Dec. it is now $59! Cuisinart website lists it at $149. (What a racket this all is.)

Pros: I LOVE making soups - very fun after years of stovetop cooking. The recipes in the booklet are interesting and delicious. I've made the carrot/ginger (I complemented it with ginger/mango Stilton cheese and crusty bread-made the meal to die for!) and the lentil (every bit as good as a stovetop recipe-I added celery)

Smoothies: I've been making green smoothies regularly. I have to admit that the blending isn't perfect. I sometimes have chunks of banana (how could it not blend a banana?) or pineapple (the fibers catch in the blade). Maybe I just need to run it longer. The greens blend beautifully. I freeze my kale, parsley or spinach and break off chunks as needed.

Con: the biggest issue I have (and warning) is to be very careful how tight you screw on the jar! It is a b----- to get off! My husband (over tightens everything) agrees that this is a design flaw. There is simply no way to get a good grip to unscrew it. One time it was stuck and I got it off by spraying cooking oil in the crack between the base and the jar. I also had it on the blend itself and it gave more leverage. I'm concerned about unscrewing it this way though. Anyone else have problems or tips and tricks??

Overall, I would recommend, especially at the current price of $59!! It's really not a cheap appliance!

Weak heating, weak blending, motor burns out after minimal use
by A. Palmer (1 out of 5 stars)
January 3, 2015

This combination of a weak heater and a weak blender is apparently all that is needed to make some yummy and healthy soup, but unfortunately the blender motor is fatally unreliable: on only the fifth use the motor started to make a burning metal smell (and the heating wasn't even on).

The heating is weak: it can heat a little oil for sauteing, but it took 15 minutes to bring 2 cups of water to boil. This problem can be avoided by pre-boiling any water that you add to a soup, then using the soup maker's heater just to maintain temperature.

The bigger problem is the blender. Even mixing liquids at the lowest speed my soup maker sounded like it was struggling, with a rattling, uneven blending action. Pre-chopped onions were the most it could handle - forget about carrots, or ice-cubes in a smoothie. In my case the motor died when blending black beans (from a can, that were already soft enough to eat) at the second lowest speed, in a mixture no thicker than a milkshake. This is similar to many other reviewers' experiences, with their motors burning out when blending things like fruit smoothies or pre-cooked rice in water.

Another point: the soup-maker cannot automatically stir while heating, but you can manually push a 'stir' button that blends at about the lowest blending speed (not a gentle stir). So the only way to avoid things sinking to the bottom and burning against the heating plate is to stir often enough that the ingredients will eventually be pureed. This was fine for the lentil soup recipe that I liked but won't be acceptable for many other soup recipes.

This product is a decent idea, but with such an unreliable blender motor this is a failed implementation.

love it but it broke & is difficult to return
by YGinNYC (4 out of 5 stars)

I love this machine (!) but the first one I bought broke after only 3 months use. It has a 3-yr warranty but the return process is ridiculously difficult. I bought another one because it's become an integral part of my cooking. The new one appears to work well. I make a lot of vegan soups & this machine was great for using up all those odd veggies that come with a winter farm share. It makes great purees and it's really handy to have only one machine to make the entire soup (less dishes to clean after!). The soups made in this machine are far superior to those I can make in a soup pot & saves the hassle of using an immersion blender or moving the soup to a stationary blender to make a puree. I only use it for soup so haven't run into the issue others mentioned re: odor retention. I use garlic, onions & ginger is my soups but also wash the machine carefully so that may be the difference (?) Overall, I love this machine - just hope the new one I bought lasts longer than the first one.

Great and easy to use !

This blender is great and super straightforward to make smoothies, soups or cocktails. The "warm" functionality is nice too to nicely and slowly heat something. Don't use it for sticky food like mashed potatoes for ex. The blades will be stuck. Do not wait for cleaning it after using. Clean/rinse it immediately to not let food dry on the glass.

Conveinent but could use some improvement...
by Jay (4 out of 5 stars)

I like the convenience of making soup in a blender since It saves me the extra step of having to remove boiling hot soup from the stove and pouring it in a blender. That said, it does do what it's designed to do but Cuisinart could make the next model a bit better. The heating process takes a bit longer than it should and the blender, although adequate for the soup, may be a bit on the weak side for those looking to blend a lot. The timer only goes up to 30 minutes and the soup takes much longer than that to cook. That means you need to monitor the blender every half hour to add time. You cannot make a lot of soup in this so you also need to keep that in mind. I would like to see the following improvements if Cuisinart should make a follow up:

Timer should be longer than 30 minutes

Faster heat/boil times

Stronger blender motor

Stay away from this product

I would 0 starts if it was possible!!! We purchased or 2nd device after the first one motor had burn out without apparent reason. We loved the functionality promise of having heating and blender capabilities in one single device. Our 2nd unit motor burned out blending carrots and sweet potatoes and had been working for less than a minute with almost not resistance. The quality of the blender is worse that those in a $20 product. Stay away from it unless you want through your money away!

Do not buy this blender. I bought one a ...

Do not buy this blender. I bought one a few years ago from Amazon. It was on sale for ~$50 at the time. I kept it for a while (didn't use it) and gave it as a gift. It was used twice, let me repeat TWICE, and then it overheated and stopped working. I contacted Amazon and they would not replace it, because it had been a few months since I had bought it. So, I contacted Cuisinart. They said that the warranty was no longer active, but that I could send it in to get fixed. I was going to have to pay for both the shipping and the repairs. The blender is still sitting in my car, broken. I may as well buy a new blender by now.

Love it! have bought FOUR of them!

For the money, this is a great deal. It is, IMO, much better than our Bullet. I have not tried the cooking element yet, but hope it will also be great...just the blender alone is worth the price

An addition to the above review...I have bought two more for others, so we definitely like!

Now I am adding another comment...another one bought...we love this machine. The negative reviews must be by people who don't know how to use it. just read the instructions!

Worst Blender ever.
by Ena J Dixon (1 out of 5 stars)
September 26, 2014

This blender is no good. I bought 2 and in approximately 30 days the motors burnt out. When the first one happened, I thought it was my fault. I purchased a second one and I was extremely careful with in. In approximately 30 days, I blend mango, kale, and blueberries. I had the drink and then later in the day I plugged in the blender to blend some coconuts and the blender would not start. Until, this day I cannot believe that the blender could not in less the 4 hours after using it. Now I am stuck with two blenders that have no use. I would not recommend it to any one. I have a blender that I bought for $19.99 in 2001 and that blender is still going strong. I bought the Cuisinart blender because of the soup making features and the ability to make smoothies which my $19.99 blender does great.
