Fun, Fun, Fun - Really!
by L. Urquidi (4 out of 5 stars)
December 30, 2011

Some other reviewers indicated that this is boring. So, when my 8,6, & 3 year olds got this for Chirstmas I figured the fun would be in the cool crayons at the end. The first batch they watched like hawks ooh-ing and ahhh-ing at the crayons starting to melt, the melted crayons, the fun of pouring, and the amazing swirls in the new crayon molds. So I thought Ok, now that's done, they will move on. Oh no... they opted to make new crayons instead of watching a movie. They made crayons the next day - all day. I am running out of old crayon pieces!!! Yes, the new crayons are a bit stubby, but little fingers don't mind. Also, my 8 and 6 year olds can run this unit on their own.

Good for rainy days and creative kids

Tips:
- use 1/3 to 1/4 of crayons instead of 1/2 - there will be more swirling of colors.
- DON'T forget the mold for the new crayons (like i've done twice now). The timer is annoying because once it is set, it takes 15 minutes for it to finally unlock the lid. You can turn the bulb off so the crayons don't melt, but if you forget the mold you have to wait 15 mins to open the contraption to put the mold in THEN 15 more minutes till new crayons (Garnering a lot of "awww moooommm, what'd you do??" comments).
- another reviewer indicated you should put the mold in the freezer for a few minutes. You can do this or put the crayons themselves in the freezer. They are still warm and breakable after the unit unlocks and they are "ready"
- Wipe the crayon ooze out of the tray while warm. It is pretty impossible once dried.
- Mixing light and dark colors make for cool swirls and attractive crayons
- Have FUN!

Not impressed with the product or the end product
by Hurley Girl's Mum (2 out of 5 stars)

I was so excited about this - I wanted to be done with the crayon bits and (a bit of nostalgia) I remembered my own multi-colored crayon shaving blobs my mom made when we were kids. Save your money - it's boring (other reviewers have mentioned this) as it doesn't do anything but melt wax (the equivalent of watching paint dry), and I have no idea how you get the swirls in your crayons. The crayons you do make are "mini-crayons" - about 1 inch long, skinny crayons. You really have to have the holder or you might as well use your broken bits. One reviewer mentioned doing these in the oven in metal mini cupcake liners and I think that's my next step - you can put more bits of crayon in and you would have the opportunity to swirl them before hardening. Definitely something adult-only, or seriously supervised with the kids, but a better option for us. It works fine (don't forget you need to supply the odd sized light bulbs - who knows where you'll get them when incandenscent bulbs are 'outlawed') but it's just not worth it.

Not THAT Bad, People
by NYCPickyMom (4 out of 5 stars)

I was hesitant to buy this since it has terrible reviews but since we went to the crayola factory, my daughter has wanted this terribly, so under the tree it went. It helped that I got it for half off. Very nice deal. TY Amazon. It really isn't that bad. People must keep in mind that it is a toy. It requires a 60 watt candelabra bulb which isn't included. I found one in the dollar store. You plug the machine in, screw in the bulb and insert some broken crayons onto the tray. You can mix colors which will make a cool, swirly effect. The lid does lock while the crayons are melting and opens 15 min. later when the crayons should be melted. If not completely melted you can turn the timer back on for a bit. Once melted you have to carefully turn a knob which will drip the wax into the crayon mold. You know have to wait another 15 for the crayons to dry. Once done your kids have their very own signature crayon creations, minus the label of course. Only 4 crayons can be made at a time. So, it is a lot of trouble to make a couple of crayons but getting to mix colors makes unique crayons. I also love that I now know what to do with all the crayons and crayon stubs that my kids deem too old or used to keep coloring with. I gave it only 4 stars because I wish you could make more at a time and because it does require an adult's help and supervision.

Piece of garbage
by Dezshoes (1 out of 5 stars)

If I could mark a zero star, I would. My 5 year old has been asking for this toy for months-he found it on Amazon and we placed it on his wish list. When it arrived, I wrapped it and placed it under the Christmas tree-he knew what it was just by the shape of the box and was so excited!!! and then we opened it. On my part, I did not realize that it required a special light bulb, luckily I had one in the house but after I installed it the machine would not operate. I assumed it was a bad bulb and went to the store to purchase another. I then installed that bulb and....NOTHING. The darn thing would not work regardless of what we attempted, my poor little guy was so disappointed and frustrated by this time that he burst into tears (he is not a crier so this frustrated me too). I told him that we would send this back to Amazon and get a replacement toy. Crayola has really started putting out some junk and this is no exception. My advice would be to avoid this product at all cost.

Easy Bake crayon maker. No bueno
by Airgonda (2 out of 5 stars)
January 7, 2014

It's not a bad idea. I understand why they have to basically take an easy bake and make a crayon melter out of it but it's just slow and makes a crayon that is already only a half a crayon and it's just globs of color. Not at all cool like the pic. My daughter did it one time a and was completely bored. And since the crayon was just a hollow glob of old crayons, well, it was just a pathetic end to a fairly long wait. I was driving to the store at 9 o'clock one night to get the proper candelabra bulb for it and when I got home it was just a full on let down.... Sorry crayola but this is a 20 dollar joke. Two stars because it works sorta...

Good Clean Fun
by GrandSpartan117 (5 out of 5 stars)

My son lives this thing! We make crayons all the time with it.

I was worried it was going to make a mess in some way so we put down newspaper on out kitchen table. We did not even need it. The lid on top LOCKS and wont open until the process is complete. So there is no way to make a mess.

Cleanup is quick and easy too. Just wipe clean with a paper town before it cools. And your done.

I just with the crayons were a normal sized crayons instead of half sized one. They go quick.

But then we make more! So it works out.

The package claims its for ages 8+ but with supper vision any child can use this. Our is 6 and we all have fun with it together.

crayon maker can't.
by Shirl (2 out of 5 stars)

I watched as the crayons started to melt, then it stopped. I was glad I had not kept my Granddaughter around to watch as I thought I needed a new bulb. We bought new bulbs, silly me I should have checked first that the bulb did indeed fail. No it didn't, logic now tells me the power supply for the bulb failed. I asked - yes asked the seller what he would do and as a reply I was blasted. He must have thought it an effective method of answering a question as in "what would he do?" Of course the polite and short answer might have been "call the number on the box, I won't refund, Crayola stands by their product."

I didn't get 1 nasty wordy response, I got 2. I will call the company I will see what they will do to satisfy me the end customer, but I won't buy anything else from the seller as he has shown me nothing but nasty.

Not worth the money
by Clarissa Waffle (1 out of 5 stars)
February 23, 2014

This is totally not worth it. I thought it would be a fun idea for the kids. As it turns out, you have to sit right next to it for about 10-15 minutes and watch the crayons melt. Then at the right moment you turn the lever to pour the wax in the mold. There is no sound to tell you when you should pour. As a result, I have found myself with intentionally broken crayons and there are more brown crayons that come out of this than tye-dye crayons, like it suggests. Also, the 60-watt light bulb that melts the wax (not included) get very hot, so this is not a good gift for kids under 8.

Dont buy it not worth your money
by cristy (1 out of 5 stars)

It is not worth the money! I bought it thinking oh this is going to be so cool for the kids and all the broken crayons I have. The kids got bored before even making the crayons because it took so long to pill off paper for them then took like 30 minutes to cook then they were still half crayons that you put in this plastic thing to make a whole crayon. I was under the impression that it made whole crayons not half crayons. if I could have I would have returned this gift but it took me so long to find the right light for it to try it out at that time it was past the returning period.

What we use to do as kids...but cooler!
by marchloe (5 out of 5 stars)
January 13, 2014

Okay, what you get is a fan friggintastic machine to melt old crayons...No, you're not gonna get cool perfect crayons to replace your busted up ones. However, you and the kiddo's get to watch busted crayons melt into a liquid goodness that pours into a mold to make some new ones. Yeah, they're gonna break again and eventually you'll end up with some mish-mosh of colors, but hey, you get to melt theses things safely! It's worth the price to spend a few hours with the kids and see what happens when you mix yellow and blue together...lol! Totally worth it!
