Very well built

My wife and I are involved in dog rescue. We have a pontoon and take a lot of dogs to the local lake. We have purchased a variety of these devices to compare them. All the dogs that we care for are of the bully type. We have American Bulldogs & Pit Bulls, etc. So the body type is always big chest and small waist.

We have an Outward Hound version that is most similar to this one, so I will compare and contrast them. The OH DFD has a full piece of cloth that has velcro to distribute the pressure underneath if lifting the dog while in it. The EzyDog in comparison has wide straps with wider cloth/padding over both straps that go under the body I think that the Outward Hound probably distributes the weight better, but it also has more potential to cause the dog to overheat also if left on without swimming. Either would cause them to overheat if left on very long without being cooled by water.

The Outward Hound version has some additional padding/flotation under the neck strap which helps keep the head higher in the water than the EzyDog. In addition the OH flotation device has a little less flotation in the rear, which lets the rear of the dog sink in a bit more so that the dog is on a slight angle in the water. The EzyDog keeps the dog very straight in the water, which effectively keeps the dogs mouth very near or in the water. You can leave the rear strap a little loose on the EzyDog, and it helps offset this tendency just a bit.

What the EzyDog needs is to have a smaller rear part. Instead of a square design from front to back, it should taper back I believe. Either a taper toward the back, or more flotation in the front. The problem with more flotation, is that it is that the EzyDog is already quite thick. It could however be done as an additional flap as on the OH DFD vest.

Another thing that the full/square back end causes for dogs with a small waist is that the strap padding will have to get pulled under the strap "guide" that holds the strap in place if it is tightened. If your dog has a tubular body style, then of course this would probably not be an issue.

In general the EzyDog is incredibly well made. The material is almost canvas like, the straps are very wide, and the buckles are heavy duty. I would not hesitate to pick up my 80lb bulldog out of the water with it. In contrast, the Outward Hound version didn't even last the first season before I ripped the handle off. The EzyDog costs about 2x the price of the OH vest, and it is easily built to last 2x as long. Heck, this thing might outlast my boat!

Your dog will not sink with the EzyDog device on. You will be able to relax and not worry if they are drowning themselves. You will be able to lift your dog up by the handle if necessary and it should last a very long time. The quality of it is outstanding. With a few design tweaks it would be perfect.

Finally, I would suggest that if in doubt, go with a smaller size. The EzyDog DFD is quite buoyant. You can stick a small one on a big dog as long as the straps fit, but you can't really do the reverse. Oh yea, adopt a rescue dog ;-)

Enjoy!

The vest saved my dog.

My German Shepherd and I just moved to the lake in North Carolina. I purchased and EzyDog life vest for her. I was careful to understand the sizing and it fits her perfect. There are several areas in the straps where adjustments can be made and she comfortable in it. She's getting used to the lake but in the meantime, she fell into the water from the pier with her vest on and although she kind of panicked, the vest did it's job. She dog paddled to the pier steps and all was fine.

There are a lot of vests to choose from on line but I'd recommend EzyDog to anyone.

Thank you

No sizes fit my dog.

There are a lot of things I love about this vest. It seems very durable and well made, and it looks sporty. But I have problems with it, too.

Firstly, the grab handle is insufficient and kind of shocking for how quality the rest of the vest is. It's a quarter inch strip of nylon, which I had to pick at with my nails just to get my hand under. There is no chance you could quickly grab it in an emergency, or that it would support the weight of a larger dog needing to he pulled back into a boat. The grab handle is a joke.

My dog is 55lbs, 27in chest and 21in belly. I got the medium first and it did not fit. The chest clip had to be loosened all the way to fit, which made the neck piece bend out and not even come across the front of his chest. The rest of the vest didn't cover enough of his back. I know it doesn't need to cover his whole back, but it was too small.

Now I ordered a large, and at first glance the fit LOOKS better. But the vest is too bulky and it moves around a lot on his body. When he puts his head down the entire vest lifts off his back even with the straps adjusted very snug. I don't think the straps are designed to cope with such a depth difference between the chest and belly, because even pulled tight they slide together in the center of his belly where they are less effective. I have no confidence he wouldn't slip out of this.

Overall, I'm disappointed. I was so excited about this vest, but it's a poor choice for an average size/shape Dalmatian.

I've included some photos so you can see how the large fits, including the way it lifts odd his back when he moves.

Great customer service!

Though it has a few small design flaws, this is a solid lifejacket, and EzyDog has amazing customer service.

Durability: The jacket we got through Amazon broke - the weakest point is definitely the front strap that goes around the neck/chest of the dog. We used the handle (on back) for lifting our dog out of the water a few times, and, after only one full day of sun and surf, it popped clean off. Everything else seems really solid and well made. I wish the weakest point were located elsewhere - though the dog will still float if this part breaks, it is very easy for it to slip off and/or get tangled around the dog's legs if this occurs. I think that, with some nylon and a sewing machine, you could easily reinforce this area if it becomes an issue for you. I suspect we had a bit of a fluke, since the material and seam quality otherwise seems great, but design-wise, this seems like a bit of a flaw to me. Any dog being "helped" by the handle, or with a leash attached to the back buckle, or even just jumping off a dock/boat into the water is going to put pressure on this point of the design, so it should be sturdier than it is. From the other lifejackets I have seen in person (though we have not tried them in the water), quality seems to be a bit better than Outward Hound, and similar to Ruffwear (though the actual design of Ruffwear's jacket has some benefits, I think). If using for boating or less hyper-active dog, you will probably never encounter these design flaws.

Customer Service: As mentioned, they are amazing. We didn't use the jacket until over a month after I actually ordered the thing from Amazon, so couldn't return, but I emailed EzyDog and they shipped out a replacement, no questions asked. With the replacement, they included an apology note, a dog cookie, and a bonus collar accessory for swapping tags if you have multiple collars. It got here in less than three days and was in great condition. We weren't even asked to return the old one, saving shipping cost and hassle. So some definite bonus points here.

Size: True to dimensions given, and very easy to adjust. We went with medium, and our dog is pretty slim for 55 lbs - his girth is not quite 30" and, though a little longer than 20", we wanted the jacket to sit more towards the front of his body (keeping his head above water is more important than his butt!). After we adjusted them, there was minimal "slip" after a full day of use (continued adjustment was not required).

Bulk: It is a little bulky at first - after we got it wet and had it on the dog for a while, it seemed to form to his body a little more (it is flat when it arrives, and quick to return to that board-like state). Gordon (dog) had no trouble running / swimming / fetching with it on though - it did not seem to slow him down at all.

Outstanding Quality - Highly Recommended

First, the EzyDog floation is made of quality materials that will be very durable and cannot imagine normal use retiring one from wear. As well, it appear that the type and amount of inner floatation material exceeds most other vests, perhaps is matched by a few...in short, you'll not be disappointed with the float qualities this vest provides. Adjustment straps on the thorax & abdomen are solid and offer a wide variety in circumference. Now, on sizing....I first ordered the medium because my dog is an 8-month old Pit bull...the original breed, (athletic, lean muscular, developed neck/shoulders, but tight abdomen. The medium worked but the neck floatation pad only closed 3/4 of the way...I could extend the strap and close it with no problem and it would have worked just fine, however, I wanted the neck floatation pad to fully cover the neck, so I ordered a large and it does the trick. My dog is the athletic build and not the Bully type that many people think are Pit bull terriers, when in fact they are an intentional breeding mutation for a shorter, heavier dog...I'll include a fairly new photo of the dog for you to see the build, and I would say he is about 45 pounds right now. Probably has his full height at around 21 inches, but likely will muscle another 10 pounds at full growth. Again, a great product and I would highly recommend floatation vest for dogs when on a river or doing the lake....yes, they can swim without one, but, as people, things can happen and dogs are subject to drowning too. If you're teaching a dog to swim...this helps their self confidence in assisting to keep them up while getting the paddling thing and helping to keep their head out of the water which is where the panic starts...Enjoy your summer!

I'm happy she liked it and at first she felt uncomfortable ...

I bought the vest last year and I used it last Sunday. I have a female Golden retriever who loves to swim. I originally bought it because we're from Costa Rica and some beaches have big waves so I was afraid she might overwork or get hurt in one of those waves. I'm happy she liked it and at first she felt uncomfortable but as soon as she saw the beach she forgot all about it. We went to Manuel Antonio so I tried it first in an "estero" which is calm and then I tried it in the beach ...I love it and she did as well!

Btw I Bought a large size. I had a video but Amazon won't give the option of video.

It also has 1 bag in the back and to give you an idea I put her leash and my sunscreen on it. The vest is adjustable everywhere so it can be even bigger.

Hope this feedback works!

Go Surf Dog, go!

Bought this vest for my one year old, 65 pound pit mix. (No she is not a vengeful killer. She is a cute beach girl) She loves the water, but with a dense body, she is not exactly built to swim. This vest was the perfect solution. It is built with the same QC as a good ski vest. The straps, buckles and goretex are exactly what you would see on your PFD. I put is on her for the first time yesterday at Hilo Bay with 6" to one footers gently rolling in. Initially she thought it felt funny, but soon she was used to it. When she hit the water in it, she was in love. I went out to chest deep water (for me) and she swam right out to me. She got a little gassed out until she figured out a good stroke, to keep her head well above water (the front band of the vest helps with this, but your dog will have to learn to keep his/her center of gravity back a little) and to relax. Soon she was doggy paddling circles around me, and chugging back and forth to the beach. I am so impressed! And it is a hoot to watch her steam around. Next I plan to see if she will stay put on my two man outrigger canoe in the open ocean. If she falls in, I am confident she won't drown.

To EZY Dog - Flotation verses actual Swimming Vest
by Amazon Customer (4 out of 5 stars)
September 9, 2019

This is the 5th Flotation Device/swimming vest I have tried for my very avid swimmer dog. I wonder how much time is actually spent testing these designs out on real dogs, actually swimming in them!? This vest is very well made but I feel the design needs modifications to make it perfect. OR a new vest designed for dogs that swim verses just an emergency flotation (overboard) device.
1) the top of the neck- in front of the ring- ought to be notched or ?. There is a lot of pressure on the dogs neck from the vest while swimming due to it holding his head above water.
2) the neck hole/buckle: needs modification to keep the 2 ends better aligned. There is too much play and tightening up too much will cause rubbing and discomfort. Plus this area needs flexibility to allow extended movement of the shoulders while swimming.
4) the chest/neck area in front of the vest: redesign to such that this area curves up and outwards for result in a chin rest and reduce water flowing into their mouths while swimming.
3) the 2 belly straps should have a neoprene sleeve or be made entirely of neoprene to increase flotation and comfort.

Excellent PFD (Pooch Flotation Device)
by Consumericious,Top Contributor: Pets (5 out of 5 stars)
October 26, 2012

Although our 12-year-old CardiCorgi-Chow mix can swim without a flotation device, we thought he might get tired if he had to swim far without one. We decided on the EzyDog due to the head support and the shorter jacket length compared to other brands. We felt the shorter length would keep our dog more comfortable when sitting or lying in the kayak. We had a hard time deciding on the size because our dog has a large chest but is otherwise medium-sized (40 pounds). The medium EzyDog fits him perfectly, and the yellow color makes him visible while swimming in sun or shade. We fasten the belts securely, and he is comfy for hours.

Our dog has worn the EzyDog four times, and so far it seems to be very well made and also easy for us to hose off dirt. He tends to jump out of the kayak to chase ducks and shore birds. The last time he jumped overboard, he swam easily in deep water for a long time--especially with the head support (he has a big head). I was surprised I was able to pull him back into the kayak in deep water without tipping the boat over. The handle on the back of the device and the wide straps underneath his torso made it very easy to pull him aboard. I'm attaching a video short of him taking a dip.

Fit not the greatest, but sturdy product.

I have a heck of a time sizing things for my very muscle bound Staffordshire Bull Terrier. He is 40 pounds of solidness. He's compact and short ( true to breed standard) so I am always falling in between sizes. I went with a small after asking the community. The seller advised to go with a Medium but I had already ordered the small vest.
My dog fell within the weight ( 40lbs) and girth ( 25 in) for the small size. Neck measures 17. The length of the small fits well as does the girth. I actually had to adjust it down almost all the way. The neck is another story. While, yes you can let out the neck support...it defeats the purpose of having a support. For my guy I had to let it out all the way. Seems like the nylon strap will chafe his neck. Looks uncomfortable, feels tight....just frustrating. Wish the neck strap had neoprene like the belly straps. I think the Medium would be way too big. Maybe the seller can chime in with the pictures I provided.

The vest feels very well made. Has ample flotation material, it's sturdy.

Will see how he fares with it in the water.

UPDATE:

The purpose of this vest for us, is dog sports - Hydro Dash and Dock Diving and some recreational use at the beach. I really have to echo that the fit for compact, fit, muscular bull dog type dogs is really discouraging. However, the vest did keep my boy afloat better vs. other vests. He did about 30 minutes of Hydro Dash class and we did not get any chaffing on his neck so far. Don't know if that would change while at the beach for a few hours.

The seller did respond to my review and suggested I go with a Medium after reviewing the pictures. I really think a Medium would be too big and I would end up sending vests back and end up with the small after all. At least I know this will work for dog sport. Will have to monitor his neck when we do a beach trip.
