Top Reviews

Some of them were thin pieces that looked like they had been removed from other bigger pieces
by Jae H. Kim (1 out of 5 stars)
September 5, 2015

After I ordered the bag and it was delivered, I let it expand for a couple of days, and then I laid down on it. I could feel bumps all over my body. I opened it up and I could see/feel pieces of foam that had hard spot on it. Some of them were thin pieces that looked like they had been removed from other bigger pieces. I also saw small pieces (couple of square inches) plastic sheets (like from plastic covering for products).

I talked to Amazon and they sent a replacement. When I got the replacement, without taking it out of the box and letting it expand, I opened up the zipper and could see/feel similar pieces with hard surfaces on them.

My guess is the company's quality control has degraded. Probably most of the early bags had relatively good quality control where the foam pieces were cut into smaller and regular shapes, and the hard pieces that were cut were thrown away. With the popularity of the product, maybe they started running out of foam and so they started keeping all the pieces and didn't bother trimming away the harder parts. Also, I got some powdery stuff from the foams - which indicates that some of the foam pieces had dried out and had disintegrated.

I just looked at a couple of pages of 5-star reviews and a couple of pages of 1-star reviews. A great majority of the 5-star reviews are from 2013 or earlier. Most of the 1-star reviews seem to be from 2014 and 2015. This seems to indicate that the earlier products were better in quality than the newer products.

I'm attaching 4 pictures. The first shows the bag with some of the foam taken out. The second picture shows the foam that was taken out of the bag. For what it's worth, from these two pictures, you can see that the foam pieces are not cut into regular pieces and they are not cut into small pieces.

The third picture shows some of the foam pieces that I noticed were hard as I removed handfuls from the bag. It also better shows the varying sizes and shapes, and the irregularity of the shapes. Also, the middle of this picture shows pieces of plastic sheets that were part of the stuffing for the bag.

The fourth picture shows 3 bags that contain the foam I removed from the Fuf bag. The left bag has hard parts to the foam. The right 2 bags have foam pieces that do not have hard parts. However, these two bags have pieces that are sort of crunchy (like they're getting dry), and the pieces vary in softness. Some are thin sheets that are very soft and some are bulky pieces that are dense. Anyhow, from this sample, it appears that 1/3 of the foam has hard parts that would be uncomfortable when you're lying on it.

The description says the bag is "Filled with super soft and long lasting fuf foam re-fuf again and again for custom comfort." Fuf foam must be their name for recycled foam pieces from a variety of sources.

Perfect. Solid. Heavy. Exactly What It Says It Is.

Like many others, I read the negative reviews before ordering. My adivce: don't put too much stock in them. Now, I admit it is a legitimate concern/critique of the product if you buy multiple units of the "same" color at once and the colors don't match. I can't speak to that. I only bought one. But some of the others I read?? Really? Claiming that it was despicably advertised as a styrofoam beanbag chair (which it wasn't), or that it has no filling and you fall to the floor? Really people? Did you not read the directions?

It should be seen as a positve that they vacuum pack the sucker into an amazingly small box (considering the final size of the product) to cut on their shipping costs (and to make it possible to move the box around). It clearly states in the included information that you have to WAIT for it it attain its full expanded shape. Right away, you can get your hands "in there" and knead the memory foam blocks inside, pulling them apart (through the supple cover of course) and shifting them so that the expansion goes as fast as possible but no matter what ... you have to WAIT. They will continue to expand for some time - not exactly sure but I wouldn't be surprised if there was still some expansion going on at 7 or 8 days.

One fact that people need to be aware of though (and some other reviewers have mentioned) is that this thing is BIG and it is unwieldy. Memory foam is heavy. I haven't weighed it on a scale but it would not surprise me to learn it is 20 - 30 lbs. and its size and composition makes that feel more like 50 or 60 lbs. So, even though it is a FANTASTIC chair/bag for kids, it isn't going to be easy for many of them to adjust/move it. In fact, smaller people with little hand/arm/upper body strength probably don't want to own this unless they have someone else living with them who can help them with it. My athletic and rather strong 9-year old niece

man-handled (or should I say girl-handled) the thing around but she's a tough, "get it done" kind of kid and wasn't intimidated by the awkward size or weight of the thing. The younger kids could barely shift it.

To really enjoy using it, you have to be ready each time to reach in with both hands, grab the material and lift the bag up and down many times vigorously. You have to slam it, flip it, shake it, fluff it up, and mold it to a form that suits you. If you want to lie on it, hop in the middle. If you want to sit upright and watch TV, you have to heap it up high and then sit low down on the edge of the thing and push yourself backwards into it. Experiment. Have fun. Don't be shy about yanking the sucker around.

One last note. Memory foam stinks. It isn't exactly a pleasant smell (though some find it more offensive than others of course) and it takes days ... perhaps weeks ... to dissipate. It didn't bother me much and obviously I'm not the kind of person to give the bag 1 star and rant about how the company lied to me because it didn't go out of its way to call out the smell specifically. I'm just trying to let anyone interested know that it does smell but it fades.

Beware--Suspect Quality--stuffed with large smelly foam chunks and other types of hard/rough-edged p
by Amazon Customer (1 out of 5 stars)

Strongly suggest buyers read the negative reviews before purchasing. This is a huge product and the smell is quite toxic. Considering that it was too big for my child's room and the smell was so overpowering, I decided to see if I could turn it into to two smaller chairs and air it out to get rid of the smell. I was horrified when I opened it up--it is stuffed with random types of dirty, stinky junk foam, paper and other rough-edged remnant packing material (see pix). I am not a sensitive person and am not terribly picky--but the stuffing inside this item made me sick. Will be taking to the dump--it is too large for the trash. Amazon should not sell this product--and hope my review will save someone else from making the same purchasing mistake that I made!

Really pleased with this bag, despite the fears leading up to its purchase
by Kevin Funk (5 out of 5 stars)

I think I spent about 4 months going back and forth about which bean bag to get, of what brand, of what price... the return awkwardness, the fear. The FEAR man....

But I'm actually pretty happy I took the leap of faith. I did make sure that amazon was the seller, for the record. My girl and I play video games on this together (among other things). It's been 1.5 months and it's served us pretty well. It's made of memory foam, and holds upright shapes better than traditional bean bags. Beware, the other images of it looking like trash on the inside are no exception with mine. It looks like it's full of various-colored memory-foam remnants. The pieces inside are also of various sizes, so it feels not perfectly uniform at times. However, I still give it 5 stars because it serves the purpose that I bought it for, and is quite comfy/cozy.

Perfect!!
by heaven (5 out of 5 stars)
February 18, 2016

I ordered this a few months ago and it is absolutely perfect!! The bad reviews on it had me a little worried but I figured that it was worth the chance. I have 6 daughters, and 4 dogs who all adore it when they get the chance to sit on it. I have put a queen size bed sheet over it to keep the dog hair off of it of course. LoL. I was surprised at how large this chair actually was after the foam had expanded. No problems with feeling any hard or undesirable foam pieces like others had complained about. If there had of been any uncomfortable pieces, it's a simple process of unzipping it and removing them. I like the fact that I can refill the foam at any time in the future. This was a great purchase and I for see it lasting a very long time.

Hated it and then loved it.
by Amazon Customer (4 out of 5 stars)

Just for some background on the person giving this review...I am a guy with his own apartment who just got out of college and needed to be frugal with his money. I'll bullet out the pros and cons before I talk a bit about why I love this purchase (The Big Joe XL).

Pros:
-Extremely comfortable.
-Easy to move around and place around the place.

Cons:
-Has a chemical smell to it when you take it out of its packaging
-Takes a day or two to settle out of its packing state. It looked extremely lumpy when I first bought it and was regretting the purchase at first.
-I saw reviews that made it sound like it could seat 3 people. Realistically, it can comfortably sit 2 people without them touching.
-The elevation you are sitting at is fairly low to the ground.

I know with those cons, you might be wondering why I rate it so highly. I'll just go through how I went from wanting to return it to falling asleep on it every night.

When I first took the Fuf out of the packaging, I was instantly hit with the chemical smell I was warned about. I brought it to my living room and 'fufed' it out and hoped it would look amazing. Well, it didn't. The thing was extremely lumpy and still smelled like chemicals. I sat on it and the thing instantly sank down more than I thought it would. I hated myself for being so cheap and just avoided it until the next day. My girlfriend told me to use on febreze on it the next day, when I was complaining about my mess up. I sprayed some on and the smell was gone. I then decided to sit and read a book on it. I woke up about 4 hours later and felt so damn well rested. My girlfriend came over that afternoon and sat on it. She instantly loved it and spent the rest of the afternoon studying on the thing.

If I had written a review on this thing the first day, I would have shot it down with 1 or 2 stars. I suggest giving the thing time to grow on you. The only reason I don't give this thing a 5 star is because of that damn chemical smell. Sure, it is easy to get rid of it and it's probably there from a cleaning agent but I highly recommend they include a masking agent with the product. If you want a very lived in and casual feel for your place, get this thing. Most of my friends are laid back and rave about my new couch. If you want a more formal look for your place, I'd suggest something else.

DON'T BUY THIS LUMPY, JERSEY MATERIAL, PLASTIC HARD FOAM FILLED BAG!
by Momtotwo (1 out of 5 stars)
December 3, 2016

I've been an Amazon Prime member since the beginning! I've spent countless amounts of money as a loyal Amazon customer. I've never been so completely disappointed in an item as I am in this Big Joe Large Fuf in Comfort Suede, Blue Sky Bag Chair. I desperately want to send it back but seriously don't know how to get it back into the packaging. HUGE waste of money. First off, this is a bunch of chopped up recycled foam that is in large pieces (average size is at least 5 inches in diameter) the foam is hard and actually a lot of the pieces have a hard plastic backing. I even found a significantly large piece of plastic, thick packing plastic (not your grocery bag plastic, take that times 100) about 11x6 inches large that I had to dig out of the bag because it was making so much noise. I "fuffed" and "fuffed" and this thing was still just as lumpy and uncomfortable as can be! I'm so very, very sad that I paid so much money for a bag full of hard, recycled plastic and foam. Additionally, the "comfort suede" is stretchy jersey material.... All around huge disappointment. The problem is, they get you by the fact that once you get this thing out of the box, there is absolutely no way in the world you are able to get it back in. You would need a machine. So, what are you going to do? You're going to do like I'm doing, eating this horrible purchase and leaving a review so that hopefully I can sway at least one person from spending $75 on this large piece of zipped up, horribly uncomfortable, lumpy, plastic and hard foam filled, jersey bag. Even if you're thinking, "she's sensitive, I'm sure it's not that bad, I'll have better luck." Just make sure when you click "buy" that you're willing to gamble $75 on your luck!

DO NOT BUY! Filled with trash foam.
by Alexandra B. (1 out of 5 stars)
April 12, 2016

DO NOT BUY THIS! Unless you like sitting on lumpy old cut up trash. Mine is filled with trash packing foam/ God knows what. Maybe some people have received authentic bags but clearly at least some are not being filled with the Fuf memory foam. Somewhere between the cover being made in China and it being filled here (as the genuine label says) someone is having fun cutting up old mattresses while laughing. Even a piece of styrofoam and plastic in there somewhere. I'm too scared to dig into in as don't know what I'll find! :0

Should have read Firefighter's review...

I was suspicious from day 1 as it seemed lumpy- but did as the instructions told and waited 7 days for it to 'RE-FUF'.

Very disappointing as was really looking forward to a nice cushy bag, now have to return. I suppose they get away with it by sending out 'some' real products? Not sure.

BUY THE FUF! It was such a great investment!
by Courtney (5 out of 5 stars)

My wife got me this fuf for a Christmas present and despite all the negative reviews I LOVE IT! When you read these reviews take the negative ones with a grain of salt. When people complain about "lumpy foam" and "sharp pieces" or "unbearable smell". C'mon people first off the foam is not sharp at all and second, what do you think it's gonna be made out of beans? People are idiots sometimes and also people claim it's a scratchy non suede material. It's not scratchy at all it's a soft suede like material. As far as the smell goes, yes it smells in the beginning like its brand new out of the factory which it's supposed to smell like and after a couple days you hardly notice it. If it bothers you that much just put dryer sheets in it and just fluff it up some more and BOOM now you have a pleasant smelling fuf. Also a negative review I read what the size and weight. Are you kidding me! It's a six foot bean bag for Pete sake! It's not going to be lighter than air!

Anyway I'm 6 feet tall and my wife and I have no problem laying on it together along with my 18mo old son and 100LB black lab. So do yourself a favor if you are on the fence about buying it for your son/daughter in college or just in general it's probably more comfortable than the bed he/she is sleeping on haha If you are thinking about buying this for your husbands man cave or just extra furniture in your living room he will be thoroughly pleased and will start doing those small projects around the house that you've been asking him to do for months because he is just so relaxed due to his time in the fuf and it will become your new favorite piece. All jokes aside I'm quite glad my wife didn't stray from this gift because a few people negative pompous comments. Enjoy your FUF!

Please READ THIS FIRST BEFORE BUYING! And see the video of what's inside the bag. You won't believe
by TundraGuy (1 out of 5 stars)

I saw these on the lightening sale on Cyber Monday. I had seen a Yogibo bag and sat in and fell in love but didn't want to spend $200 and I 'THOUGHT' this one would be as good as it. Boy was I wrong! I got it in, opened the box and removed the compressed cube to let it expand. After a day it had grown to near full size and after a few days I sat in it. I immediately noticed the feel of chunks of foam inside the bag. Not the smooth feeling I was expecting. I gave it a chance tho. Well, after 2 nights of sitting in it I knew I was not going to like this and had made a mistake because I knew Amazon would take it back but how was I going to ship this thing back now that it had expanded into a gigantic bag? I didn't have a machine to compress it into a cube again.

So I got on Amazon.com and chatted with customer service. He immediately said I can return it and he would process a return label. I immediately asked how was I to ship it back since it was huge now. He said that I can compress it back down and put it in a box to return. I said I don't have anything to put it in to compress it down like the company did. So I asked if I could dump the garbage out of it and return the bag itself and he said yes I could. GREAT!!! Problem solved! This is going back.

PLEASE look at my video I'm including to see the unbelievable junk inside this bag! It's literally chopped up recycled pieces of foam and some pieces are fairly hard chunks like the black ones in the pic. And notice the thin white pieces. They are like Styrofoam take-out plates from a restaurant!!! THIS DOES NOT CONTAIN MEMORY FOAM!!!! I REPEAT, NOT ONE SINGLE PIECE OF MEMORY FOAM COULD BE FOUND INSIDE THIS BAG! It's scraps from what looks like carpet and upholstery places!!! I wouldn't post this if it were not so unbelievable. I can't believe they sell this junk for over $100 especially! Someone is making a killing on these but they won't be making it off of me! Thank you Amazon for taking care of your customers so well! That's why I do so much business with you. You are amazing.
