A good start to trying the art of Home Brewingby Joshua Giles (4 out of 5 stars)

Summary:
This kit truly does streamline the process of all grain brewing. If you are considering entering the home-brew family, I would definitely suggest starting with a one gallon kit such as this one. The directions are listed on Brooklyn Brewing's website and are relatively intuitive and accompanied by a helpful video which overviews the whole process in around two minutes. Brewing time is around 3 hours the first day and around an hour on bottling day, about a month start to finish.
Things not in this kit that you'll need:
-A big pot or two! I recommend at least a two gallon stockpot as well as another large pot. Having multiple pots makes heating the mash and hot water for the wort much easier.
-Strainer: Large stainless steal is best. You want one that fits over your big pot comfortably.
-ICE! you'll need to cool your wort quickly in an icebath, The easiest way to do this is in your sink with purchased bag ice. Two bags is plenty.
-Bottles! Gotta put that beer somewhere right? Whatever you do, don't go buy empty swing top bottles or a capping setup for this one batch. If you drink Grolsch, you can simply save the swing tops (it's pretty much the same price as buying empties but you get beer). For the cheaper of us, I recommend just getting two 6 packs of 16oz. A&W root-beer. The bottles are brown which helps keep light from affecting the beer, and PET is fairly oxygen impermeable as plastics go. At any rate, with the fairly short timeline of a month from brew to mouth, you'll not likely notice any oxidation (at least it will be the least of your taste worries on this brewing adventure->spend your time worrying about sanitation instead).
Bottom Line:
This is a great place to start if you would like to start home brewing. It gives you more of a realistic big boy brewing experience than a Mr. Beer or similar extract brewing kit, and you can easily reuse all the equipment in making other small batches in the future. Realistically, if you really enjoyed brewing, you'll probably end up upgrading to a five gallon setup, but it is nice to have a small fermenter for trying off recipe madness on your own. Don't feel cornered into buying the refills either, They are certainly convenient and Brooklyn's kits produce some really great beer, but you can definitely feel free to go buy ingredients yourself either online or at your local home brew shop (LHBS).

Exceeds Expectations

I got this as a gift for my boyfriend and I assisted him in brewing his first batch. I didn't know what to expect getting one of these pre-packaged sort of kits with a pre-set recipe, but I was impressed. At times, the recipe online was difficult to follow and not very well edited, but we were able to supplement the confusing or missing information by referring to Google. The final product was very flavorful and had a decent amount of carbonation. We had accidentally forgot about one of the beers and found it in the fridge well over a month after it was deemed ready by the recipe. The flavor was absolutely incredible and it had perfect head :) Overall, I think this is a solid starter kit, though I recommend reading the directions thoroughly before beginning so you don't get stuck in the middle of an important part of the brew. Oh and make sure you have all of the equipment you need, especially in terms of size (we ended up needing a very large sieve that we got for a great deal at a restaurant supply store which, by the way, is a fantastic place to get brewing equipment).
... first beer brewing kit and had a lot of fun with it

I got this as my first beer brewing kit and had a lot of fun with it. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and the beer turned out pretty darn good! I think the best part is that I can still use most of the equipment for brewing small batches of whatever else I want. Overall, if you are looking for a kit to try out brewing with you won't go wrong with this.
One suggestion - don't use the thermometer that comes with the kit. I don't know if mine was broken in shipping or if it broke after a really small bump when I was handling it, but either way it should not have broken for any reason. About an hour into the brewing process I noticed a red color, which turned out to be the liquid from inside the thermometer. I had to throw out the whole batch, as I didn't want the thermometer liquid in my beer and I couldn't be sure how much glass got into the beer. Luckily Amazon was very understanding and sent a replacement kit. However, I would have rather just avoided the headache up front and bought a different thermometer (which I did before the second batch).
Not for beginner maybe intermediate or the cusp of medium

I liked the carboy I liked the setup but there are no specific instructions. For example "add equal parts water equal parts sugar" how much? Long story short I added too much sugar and my product exploded. I am stupid but not that stupid. I don't think it is for beginners I think its maybe intermediate. The instructions are pictures showing the process not telling specifically what to do. I think I will come back to it when I get more experience.
A little difficult but doable.

First off, the siphon was broken so I had go out and buy another siphon to bottle the beer. Not a big deal but it was definitely an inconvenience. The kit itself doesn't come with the full instructions; you would have to go on the website for the full details. Also the instructions are just text instructions, there are no videos or pictures to help you. The process isn't too difficult but I would not recommend it for beginners. You would have to do research before since there's a lot of detail involved and at least 4 hours of time needed to brew successfully.
Overall, it was a good learning experience.

This kit is such an awesome experience! We just started this yesterday and are currently at the fermenting stage. We got the Eveyday IPA kit and my boyfriend has been loving every minute of it! The process is easy although the kit doesn't come with directions and you have to go to their website and print them off. They aren't that detailed and if you've never made beer before you may want to do your research on what tools are in your box before you start as there is no list of what everything is and what it's used for. Also, make sure to check that your thermometer works as ours did not and we didn't find out until we had already started the process but thankfully we had another we used for baking so it didn't ruin our whole batch. There are some extra tools you have to buy including bottles and big pots but that isn't a deal breaker and would have made the kit more expensive. Overall I would highly recommend this kit to anyone who is looking to try making a small batch of beer. We are planning on trying one of their other packets, maybe the hard cider one!
Super dangerous.

I followed all of the instructions to a tee and ended up with bottle bombs. For those unfamiliar, your bottles can become overly-pressurized and start exploding. This creates a huge safety hazard. Glass shrapnel and beer everywhere. Thank god nobody got hurt. There was no warnings about this possibility of anything like this anywhere in the instructions. We did not deviate from the instructions so I'm not even sure how this happened.
Excellent First Time Beer Kit

I have been wanting to make my own beer for a while and was intrigued by this kit when searching Amazon. I'm a fan of IPA's so I thought this would be a good first kit as opposed to some of their other kits. What I really liked about this kit is that it only makes a gallon of beer which is what I wanted to start out with before investing in a larger kit. When I got my kit, I immediately checked to ensure that everything was included and that the parts were intact. Luckily, no broken thermometer! I was a little disappointed that they didn't have any detailed instructions included in the box and instead point you to their website. However, the instructions and videos on their website were clear, informative, and easy to follow. I successfully made my first batch of beer without issues or problems using this kit and it is now waiting in my basement for a couple of weeks to bottle. Overall I am very satisfied with this kit and after visiting their website, I am looking forward to trying more of their beer mixes and plan on purchasing one of their books as they have some interesting recipes for unique beers.

My wife wanted to get me started brewing rather than continue to talk about "wanting to try it some day" so she bought me a set of 12 swing top bottles for Christmas. That left me trying to decide how to proceed with a first brew. This kit was the answer and I'm glad I gave it a try. The kit and instructions make it easy for a novice to at the 1 gallon scale but it also gives you an idea of how a full grain brew would work at a larger scale. It was interesting enough that I immediately went out and bought the gear to do 5 gallon full grain batches and not I'm hooked. The IPA turned out pretty well, although a bit fizzy probably because of the uncertainty of honey, the small batch and probably some measuring slop on my part. I've since moved to corn sugar. One thing that might make this kit more foolproof would be the inclusion of a pre-measured packet of corn sugar.
