Packaging was good. Came with a free paper lantern. I love it.

The mooncakes were delicious and fresh tasting. I will definitely be buying more next year.

Even though I had procrastinated ordering, these arrived right on the dot for my Chinese New Year dinner, & were delicious. Plus, I really enjoyed the smaller size than the ones I purchased last year, as they are quite rich.

honestly, these are best mooncake out on the market
by J. L. (5 out of 5 stars)

First off, as a disclaimer I live in Southern California where there are a few Kee Wah Bakeries located. I can walk in and buy these mooncakes. I was looking for a way to ship some moon cakes to some out of state friends and family. After speaking with the local bakery, they told me that I can buy these moon cakes through their website or on amazon.com.

Shipping: I ordered late at night and by the next day afternoon, my order was shipped with a tracking number in my email inbox. Then two days later, I got a few phone calls from my friends that i sent the mooncakes to. Each order was accompanied by a free paper gift bag.

Product: Ive a had quite a few different moon cakes brands in my life. Growing up chinese, we constantly received many different brands of mooncakes during this time of year. Eventually, we settled on this brand to give to our friends and family even though it's probably one of the most expensive, if not the most expensive moon cake brand out on the market. $15 for a small box of four mini mooncakes (I recommend these if this is your first time trying mooncakes) and $35-$45 for a box of regular sized mooncakes.

With mooncakes, you are looking for three things:
1.) The outside layer of the cake is a thin, tender pastry skin. The crust of this moon cake can be best described as lightly sweetened with a combination of chewy and crusty; almost like a freshly baked cookie, but made very thin.
2.) Different styles of mooncakes uses different types of fillings. Some cultures eat coconut, taro, green tea, durian, etc; however this particular mooncake is a traditional Cantonese/Hong Kong style filling, the most popular of which is lotus seed paste. However, beware that not all fillings are equal. Real lotus paste filling is VERY expensive, thus a lot of the cheaper moon cakes uses some kind of filler (some type of bean paste). I suspect that the high price of this particular moon cake is due the quality of the filling.
3.) In traditional chinese pastry, the yolk represents the "full moon" which is the main focus of the mid-autumn festival. The taste of egg yolk is subjective.
*Things that can be improved:
1.) I wish these things were prime eligible.
2.) One of my friends said that one of the mooncake tins was damaged during shipping, I contacted the company and they actually sent a replacement tin. So maybe improve packaging.
3.) Lower price.

I buy these moon cakes at the local store and I actually met the people that were responsible for the internet sales. Both Tony and Vivian were very helpful at the store and answered all my questions. I saw the other reviewer's concerns about the cakes being made in Hong Kong so I asked them. They told me the mooncakes were baked here locally in Southern California but the box was imported from Hong Kong corporate.

misleading information about weight
by Jing Zhang (1 out of 5 stars)
September 13, 2013

Maybe it's not the fault of the bakery itself, but the weight information available at the Amazon.com webpage, said to be "1 pound" (and 2 pounds for the shipping weight) is wide of mark. The box I just received clearly says on the outside that the net weight (of the 4 mini moon cakes) is only 7 ounces -- that's less than even half of 1 pound and the box itself is fairly light. The shipping weight is definitely less than 2 pounds -- the shipping cost of nearly 10 bucks is high in the context of what shipments typically cost on Amazon. Saying that the product weight is 1 pounds clearly implies that each of the 4 mini moon cakes is 4 ounces or so. In addition, the same bakery's 8 mini moon-cake package, which costs twice as the 4 mini piece package, clearly says that the package has "30 oz Contents", which is not much different from the 1 pound quote given here. I have not tasted the moon cakes yet (won't do that until 9/19/2013 the actual Moon Festival), and it may be great, but I heartily dislike being misled on important information such as the weight of food items. I won't pass any legal judgment here, but we are here talking about culturally significant objects (not really "sacred" but not far from that) and misleading customers on such things is doubly unethical. Besides, 6 dollars for one 1.75 oz moon cake (which may cost less than 1.5 dollars) is way too expensive.

No expiration date visible either. The box says "Made in Hong Kong" (which could apply only to the box itself and not its content but I doubt it) though if you read the Amazon webpage for this product, it says "Baked fresh daily in Los Angeles, USA." That's not good. If it's made in HK, say it. I am not against buying food made in HK, but won't buy anything again from a supplier that does not tell the truth.

poor quality
by Lin Donglei (1 out of 5 stars)
September 24, 2019

I highly doubt why it's got such a high ratings. just by looking at its ingredients of pastes, it's not pure lotus seed, which has been the standard of quality this year! and the sugar level! it's at the high end overall as well. so it's a NO! poor quality stay away from it. you can easily find a better one at cheaper price elsewhere!

Not great, but better than none, and please omit the junk
by Mehetabelle (3 out of 5 stars)

The best part of these moon cakes may be its price. Moon cakes, especially the ones with egg yolks in them, are always very expensive. The 'standard' size ones, about 3 inches square, usually costs about $10 each, or more! These Kee Wah mini ones taste like 'authentic' ones and do have one (not two, which is the tradition) egg yolks in each cake. Two egg yolks would not fit into these small cakes! The batch I received this time was a dry. Previous boxes were more fresh. What I don't like is the 'marketing filler' "gift set" junk that they waste money on: the paper lantern, the paper gift bag, the plastic knife. I do like the metal box.

So delicious and fresh.

These are so delicious and fresh. They remind us of the moon cakes we get at the Chinese Harvest moon festival every fall. We prefer the ones with no yolks. We love both the lotus seed & red bean moon cakes.
