Cookie Hip

These super-sturdy cookie cutters are rather time-consuming to use, but when used properly, the cut-outs turn out awesome. I've used these to make cookies for a wedding shower that spelled out the couple's names, and also at Christmas to spell out "Noel" and got tons of compliments on how cute they were both times. The back of the cookie press is actually the cutter, which cuts the square or rectangular shape out of the pressed dough (the directions tell you to cut out the shape first and then press the letter in, but I found that the square and rectangular shapes became distorted if done in this order -- pressing first kept them all shaped nicely).

A couple of tips...generously flour BOTH sides of the cutter before pressing into dough. There are some very small crevices that will get jammed up if you don't use enough flour. Also, when getting the cookie out of the back, you have to tilt the cutter at an angle and smack it on your hand to jar it out. This took some practice, but after a few mess-ups, I got the hang of it. Once the cookies were on the baking sheet, I dusted a bit of colored crystal sugar into the letters and used a paintbrush (or a silicone basting brush) to sweep any stray sugar into the letter impressions. The colored sugar really made the cookies look great.

Overall, for me, the price was very reasonable and this was a good buy, but I definitely will be reserving these spelling projects for the adult crowd (kind of a bummer to see the kids jam a cookie into their mouths without even admiring it, considering the time that went into making them)! :)

Doesn't work as expected
by H. Rich (3 out of 5 stars)

I like the idea of these, but they don't function as I expected. The letters don't get embossed into the cookies at the same time you cut them out. Instead, you cut the shape out of your dough first. Because these cutters aren't open like a traditional cookie cutter, sometimes the dough sticks inside and you have to shake it out, which can cause the dough to get misshapen. Once the cut dough is out, you turn the cutter over and line it up over the cut down and press it down. Depending on your dough and how hard you press, the letter may come out clearly or it may not. And if you press too hard, you will again cause your dough to get misshapen.

I used these to make monogrammed gift tags out of clay, but it worked the same as cookies, except that the clay is more dense. I might try them again sometime since I already own them, but if I knew then what I knew now, I wouldn't have spent the money.

I got the Type Style and it stunk! There was no way for the letters to stay stamped. As soon as you stamped it, the design would go away. There were no instructions so I have no idea if you can put the cutouts in the oven

Great cookies, iffy letters

Great cookies recipe included in box. However the indentations in the cookies kinda disappear when you cook them.

Not great but not terrible

Packaging is flimsy and makes it very difficult to store. Not very sturdy material, but I understand this a little because of the price.

Ok cutters

Unfortunately the numbers don't really hold their outline very well. If I were using a royal icing to decorate I might have rated higher, but beyond icing, you can't see the numbers with anything else

Just OK

These are just ok... the cutters are hollow so the dough can get stuck inside easily. The stamps on the other side work fine. I wouldn't buy these again

When you attempt to make the cookies the shape gets destroyed as you bake it. When you cut them the dough gets stuck inside.
