Battery dead, right out of the box, on second tag.

Our Loc8tor came today...one of the tags works perfectly, the other one not at all...luckily I read the reviews before we ordered this and I also ordered extra batteries for them at the same time...too bad they didn't come in the same box, though. Our indoor/outdoor blind cat is now set up, in case we can't find her in the yard, but her sister, the roamer, will have to wait for hers until the batteries DO show up. That's not really good for building a reputation as a reliable manufacturer. But I rated it as a "like" because the one that did work right out of the box works fine.

UPDATE: The extra batteries arrived and we replaced the one in the second tag...still no dice. So for $99 we got one tag that works. Period. It works ok, but even with a line of sight, it is sort of weak at about 100 feet. It's sure better than nothing though. We have found Boots three times now when she was holed up in the yard and didn't want to come in when she was called after dark. I would also love for the technology to allow for smaller tags, as.our two old cats are tiny...one is only six pounds and the other is under 8 pounds.

I have had this product for three months now. I wanted to wait a while and use it before giving a review. We purchased this for our cat who has disappeared twice in ten years. Both times I was heart-sick that he was gone. After the "ghost" appeared unharmed on his second disappearance I knew I had to do something for my own sanity. I researched many things, I thought about keeping him inside only, my husband even made an outside cat run for him. But our boy just truly loves being outside and at 10 years old, I thought it would be very difficult for him and ourselves to keep him as an indoor-only cat. I finally settled on giving this product a try. After three months of use I have to say I am glad that I have purchased it. After never wearing a collar, our cat adapted quickly and easily to his new collar. I thought it might be a problem, but he associates the collar with "outside" so he's been fine with it. I have to estimate that we have used the product at least 25 times in the three months we've had it. Usually when it is time to leave the house/or at night and we want our cat in. The loc8tor has helped us find him 85-90% of those 25 times. We have found out that our cat can be very close, but just "not in the mood" to come when we call. We've found him even in the attic of our own home and in our garage! It is easy to use and I like that it gives color and sound verification of the location. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is the limited range. We live in a rural, hilly area with lots of trees. That 10-15% of the time we couldn't find him with the loc8tor was due to the limited range. It just didn't pick him up. He had roamed out of range. One other nice thing for peace of mind is even if he doesn't come all the way home when I call, if I see/hear the loc8tor has him in range, I know he's close by and I feel better. Usually that means he'd just like a few more minutes outside and then he comes home! I have just recently changed the battery in the remote, but not the collar yet. So all in all, I really like the loc8tor and it has made life easier in our home more often than not by allowing us to quickly find our cat - but I just wish the range was bigger. I would recommend purchasing it.

A pet tracking product suitable for cats that works

For us, this is a truly 5 star product, we moved from an apartment in Italy with our cats, to a farm in Ohio, and our cats having never "experienced" outside, I was worried. We live in a somewhat wooded area and wanted to be able to give them the freedom they deserved with the feeling of security I wanted. After researching many "pet tracking" products (mostly suitable for dogs only) I came across this. It performs well and if you follow the instructions it works every time. Inevitably I end up looking for our cat at night, in the woods and 100% of the time I can find her, and thats exactly what I wanted.

Not what you expect but what works

So I looked at ALL (I do mean all) the cat trackers there are available. Everything from doors that you can install so only the animals with the right permissions can go in or out, to the GPS, to the subscriptions, down to the "alert EVERYONE with the same app that your cat is missing! " (Isn't that what Nextdoor is for?)

I finally settled on this one because it offers two things none of the rest do. One, it acknowledges that cats, especially frightened cats, will Hide in the hardest to get to places. The way it works, you can find that fuzzy ninja if they're up a tree, under a neighbor's deck or house, or even in you closet sleeping in your basket of clean clothes (because you needed all that white fur on your favorite black shirt) it does this because of reason two. Reason two, you get to play hot/cold with a little hands held beeping light up remote! If you have a young kid either embrace the fact that this will be they're new favorite thing to do with the cat or hide the device because again, what beats a game of hot/cold with a set of lights and your cat!

An Unbelievable Technology

I have had this Loc8tor for almost 2 years. Until last week, I used it with Rocco (my cat that is allowed out during daylight hours) when he didn't come when called immediately. Within 5 minutes, he would either come to the back door or meet me where I was!

Last week, however, he didn't come before dinner time. I went out with the Loc8tor, walking the neighborhood but to no avail; I was obviously getting more and more upset since this wasn't anything that I had experienced before. My husband and I then took the car and slowly 'ran the roads' with me holding the Loc8tor out the window. The VERY LAST road we went down (not very far from our house as the crow flies), the buzzer sounded a bit. I frantically jumped out of the car and proceeded to the backyard of a house (by now, it was a bit past dusk). The buzzer got louder and was at its max and I heard a cat meow but couldn't find him. THEN - we looked up the tree where the Loc8tor was buzzing the loudest....and there our 'Tarzan Rocco' was, about 30 feet up. To make a very long story shorter, he was evidently treed by the dogs at this house! If it wasn't for the Loc8tor, we KNOW we would never have found our furry boy! I recommend it to ANYBODY who needs to have overall peace of mind AND a great way to find your pet. After this incident, if I could give a review of 10 stars, I would! Thank you Loc8tor!

Batteries Drain In a Few Day - Collar was Unusable

This collar is a great concept, but in my experience it simply wasn't workable. The collar-worn tag drains its battery within a few days.

The battery that shipped with the product was dead within a few days. I then replaced it with a fresh, name-brand battery that I tested at 100% before placing into the tag. It also died within a few days.

Having to replace batteries every few days is unworkable. Moreover, if my cat is lost and the device is unable to find him, how would I know whether he's actually out of range, or rather if the battery simply died overnight?

I tried to link my tags, one refused to link. I had read previous reviews, so I started by changing the batteries. The defective tag, beeped and lit up, but will not sync. After much fighting I did finally get the tag to sync.

The tag I did get to link works as advertised, it's not very loud, and even with fresh batteries, I found the range very limited. I left the tag on the second floor of my house, and walked outside it barely registered 30 feet away through an exterior wall. So if your cat hides in buildings, your unlikely to detect them, unless your very close.

WARNING: description inaccurate

I have just received this product and must warn people that the description is inaccurate. It claims to provide an alert mode that will tell you if your per wanders too far. NOT TRUE!!

THAT version of this product has been DISCONTINUED by the manufacturer, I have now discovered.The one you will receive has homing capability ONLY.

If the mode is crucial to you do NOT buy this product.

CHANGE THE BATTERIES FIRST THING!!!

I really like this Loc8tor. It does work very well! However, it comes with very poor batteries that are weak to begin with, and last a very short time. The batteries in the collar devices only lasted a week for me. I highly recommend that you order the Energizer batteries that can be bundled with the Loc8tor as part of the order. Then change all the batteries with the hugely better quality, and longer lasting Energizers *before* pairing the collar to the handset, and putting them on your pet.

UPDATE: Don't believe 90% of the reviews! This a decent product, but don't expect it to detect your pet at 60 yards. With fresh batteries and no obstructions, you might get 200 feet, but reality is maybe 50 feet ... Also, your review won't be seen if you mention where the horribly performing, included batteries come from ...

So I was pretty excited when I saw this new design

I owned a previous Loc8tor model to keep track of my cat. However, the old Loc8tor died after getting dipped too many times in the water bowl. So I was pretty excited when I saw this new design, with a case that holds the locator along the cat's collar, rather than hanging down as it did before. It is a fantastic project with only a few negative features: 1) the locator is still rather large for small pets. It is bigger than the etched ID tag, but at least it stays dry! 2) syncing the locator tag with the handheld remote wasn't as easy as the instructions suggest, but it did eventually sync. 3) if my cat strays too far, the range of the Loc8tor isn't strong enough to find her. Fortunately for me, she tends to stay in the yard so the range is perfect to locate her. This is the 2nd Loc8tor I've owned and it is great for finding my cat around the house/yard. Much much better than the GPS type locators.
