OpenEase is the one tool no kitchen should be without because it solves a problem that frustrates everyone from time to time.
How To Use
Simply place the jar opener on top of the jar and press the "Open Jar" button. The outer arms grip the jar while the inner arms close tightly around the lid and rotate, loosening the lid effortlessly. It's that simple! Press the "Release Lid" button and the arms let go of the lid and jar. The jar opener will turn off automatically; no off button is needed. If stored in the most compact position, press "Release Lid" first to open arms wide enough to place over jar lid. Then press "Open Jar" to tighten arms around jar and open lid.
Designed By Consumers For Consumers
At Hamilton Beach, every appliance has to perform well for consumers before it ever makes it onto the shelf. As we design products, we seek out honest feedback and opinions from a variety of sources. Now that's Good Thinking.
For the OpenEase Jar Opener, we focused on handgrip, comfort, and control. We talked to The Arthritis Institute and interviewed people with dexterity issues and arthritis. As we sought their feedback about the jar opener, we left no stone unturned. How does it feel in your hand? Which location do you prefer for the buttons? How does it feel when you press them? Once we were clear about consumers' needs, we knew we had a product that would make their lives easier.
About Arthritis*
Did you know that arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the United States? Approximately 50 million Americans live with arthritis. That makes even the simplest tasks like opening jars a daily struggle. * Source: 2007-2009 National Health Interview Survey (conducted by National Center for Health Statistics).
Tips & Care
Do not use with plastic jars. Jar opener is intended only for glass jars with screw-on lids. Be sure the outer arms of the jar opener fit securely on jar to prevent slipping. The jar opener will turn off automatically when the arms reach the outermost or innermost position. For tapered jars, place hand on top of jar opener to hold firmly in place to ensure that the arms do not slip on the jar.
For more compact storage, press the "Open Jar" button to reset the arms to the innermost position. To replace batteries, press and slide the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow. After replacing batteries, slide the cover closed in the opposite direction of the arrow. The jar opener may start running when the batteries are installed. This is normal.

Dead on Arrival .... OLD PRODUCT ... NO LONGER MADEby Just Mike's Opinion (1 out of 5 stars)

Received and was disappointed - dead on arrival. The OPEN LID button would do nothing. The other RELEASE LID button worked. Called Hamilton Beach as directed on the box for problems. WAS SHOCKED to find out that they discontinued this item and haven't sold it in OVER a YEAR. They would not repair; nor replace the unit. So sent it back to Amazon as damaged product.
For me: I WILL NOT BUY AGAIN .... no longer in production and NOT supported by the manufacturer - Hamilton Beach ... disappointing.
Works slowly, but gtreat, them rubber grips broke apart

This work slowly, but was great. I took it to a Fourth of July picnic where it was used by many other older women (I am 76). It was used to open pickle jars, salsa jars and sauerkraut jars. Weather was hot, but this was not left in the sun. I didn't use it much since then, went on vacation, but when I returned, the opener kept slipping off the jar. I, at first, thought it was my fault, but a week later I decided to examine the opener and just saw the damaged inside grips. See pictures. Luckily I have a few days left to return it. My friend has a large expensive model that was given to her as a present, but she still has strong hands, and she said she would give me her jar opener.
Don't Follow The Quick Start Guide

I love this little gadget! I rarely need help opening jars, but pickle jars and big olive jars (not the little ones) are impossible for me and drive up my husband's blood pressure, so he told me to get a jar opener. I didn't have room for one of those big stands like my mother in law has, and they're about $100, so I was really excited to find this little automatic jar opener. And it works really well! As others have said, it's very loud, but unless you have a sleeping baby to worry about, it's not a big deal.
There are only two buttons- one to open the jar, and one to release the lid. When I got it, I was so excited about trying it that I didn't read the full instructions- just the quick start guide. The quick start guide does indeed tell you how the machine actually operates (just open it fully, set it on the jar lid, and press the button- the outer arms grip the jar while the inner arms twist the lid). Well, my husband grabbed the jar as an additional safety measure, but neither of us thought to grip the machine. The quick start guide didn't say anything about holding anything, so....
Anyway, the machine worked great! In about 30 seconds, it had the jar open. But, it worked a little too well. When the lid popped open, the force of the machine twisting it made the lid AND the machine fly off AND twisted the jar out of my husband's grasp. The whole jar went flying and I lost half of the juice and about a dozen olives (like I said, it was a big jar). I thought it was hilarious. Anyway, after I got everything cleaned up, I sat down and read through the actual instruction manual. Lo and behold- it tells you to grip the jar AND keep a firm grip on the machine. That would have been useful in the quick start guide. (yes, I know, you'd think common sense and all, but common sense goes flying when you're excited about something)
All in all- great little product. Slightly larger than I expected but much more easily stored than those big jar opener stands.
UPDATE: My first machine died a quick death (simply stopped working). This is most likely from the flying incident mentioned earlier, though I don't know. It was within 2 weeks of using it, and I contacted the company. They replaced it super quick, and the replacement still works very well. (I'm not sure how long ago that was, but I believe it's been more than a year.)
Great for those with arthritic hands (and don't have an extra set in-house)

My mother mentioned having a very difficult time opening jars, to the point that she avoided making certain dishes that required prepackaged ingredients not stored in a can. Ugh, picturing this in my head hurt (my soul), and I immediately searched for a remedy. Of all the options available (actually not that many), I chose this model, despite it being discontinued, based on reviews posted here and elsewhere. If it didn't work, then I would shell out the $150-300 for the next best model, but thankfully it worked just as advertised, , which she happily showed me during my next visit. I was reluctant to buy this because it seemed too easy to use to be effective, but I saw for myself that it works, albeit slowly. I don't understand why it was discontinued. Would definitely buy again if I can find one.
Automatic Jar Opener

This item only works on jars with metal lids and many of the jars today are plastic with plastic lids. I have read and followed the instructions and of the multiple times I tried to use it on metal lids, it only opened a jar once and I had to assist by pushing the one arm in as one arm grabs better than the other and turning the jar with my bad hand while pushing down on the opener with my left hand during opening operation. Also, it will not work on lids if the jar was refrigerated due to moisture (condensation) on the lid; so you have to wait until the lid warms and wipe off any moisture first. Even though I had surgery in the beginning of August, I am still getting therapy on my right hand as I still do not have any strength in this hand and I still need something to help open jars. I have not found this item to be of assistance to me and wish I could still return it and get a refund.
Brought my mother to tears

What a great product. I bought this just before christmas as a stocking stuffer for my mom, however the reaction I received was entirely unexpected.
I thought this gift a useful little tool to help her open jars because of arthritis and other issues with her hands.
As soon as she opened this up and read what it was, she started crying. Out of the computer, TV, random other items, this gift was the best one she received. For 10 bucks at that!
She suffers from arthritis and has issues opening jars and dropping things very easily. When we put this to work, I, being the cynic, didn't think it would work to be honest with you. To our amazement, it actually worked quite well.
We tried it on a 20oz diet pepsi you would get from the store - worked
We tried it on a glass jar with alfredo sauce - worked
We tried it on plastics bottle, glass bottles, ect - worked
This is an extremely useful tool and if anyone struggles with opening jars or anything with a lid, buy this.
UPDATE: Works when I need it

This Hamilton Beach jar opener would work well for someone who has difficulty with jar lids. I tried using the jar opener with both small lids and larger lids and it does well most of the time. My biggest problem was with a jar of spaghetti sauce. The jar opener would slip off the jar because of the tapered glass. The manufacturer recommends holding the jar opener down in those circumstances. Once I did that, it worked. However, although I didn't have to use the full weight of my body to hold the jar opener down, it did require more force than I think some elderly people have. Those are the people who would likely be using this device. So, I conclude that it works for some jars and not others, if you don't want to apply any force at all.
I do like the one touch operation. It doesn't stop automatically. One must press the "release lid" button to have it release, and then it just keeps opening until the arms are fully extended. To close for storage, press the "open jar" button and let it run through the cycle.
The jar opener comes with batteries. It's a little bulky, but will fit in most kitchen drawers. It works on lids from 1 to 4 inches. I think it's handy to have around when the old spoon on the lid trick doesn't work.

UPDATE 11/19/13: It's been more than a year. I'm relying on this jar opener more and more as the lids are getting tighter or I'm aging very quickly, or maybe I'm just lazy. I've found this jar opener stores best upright on its feet in a cabinet so as to not accidentally push buttons and start a cycle when I don't want. They ought to put a "store" setting on it so we don't need to worry about that.

UPDATE 7/16/15: I still have this and it still works. I don't even try to open jars now. If they are stuck, I take this out. Battery life is great. I don't remember the last time I changed the batteries on it.

UPDATE 3/18/17: Just wanted to come back to let you know how things are going. Coming up on five years now. It still works. Still love it. I know I originally wrote that this works on some jars and not others, but I can't remember the last time I needed it and this didn't work, except when I originally tested it and was looking for a challenge. Anyway, after all this time, I really believe the rating needs to go from four stars to five, so I will up it now.

UPDATE 9/6/17: After so many years of service, the gears have begun to strip. My opener doesn't work quite as well as it used to. Whereas it rarely failed before, it has begun to have misses. I may have to go back and buy me a new one.
Great for those of us who are losing the use of our opposable thumbs or our hand strength. :-)

When your opposable thumbs stop working properly due to arthritis or any other condition, this contraption allows you to open jars without asking for assistance. Manual jar openers work fine, unless you can't use your hands well enough to grip and turn them, in which case this is the answer. It does take a few minutes to figure out and, once you know how to use it, it takes a few moments for it to open jars, but it works well and that is the important thing.
Don't Bother

After much thought and deliberation, I got this for my mother as a Christmas present (what do you get the elderly woman who has everything?) .
It seemed like a wise choice, because she's always struggling with opening jars.
In great anticipation of taking this thing out for its maiden voyage, we opened the packaging,
carefully read the directions, inserted the batteries, and found a new jar of apple sauce as a test subject.
We carefully positioned this thing on the jar, switched it on and excitedly crowded around.
It goes into its routine and starts whining away. Then, instead of tightening it's little vise on the lid and effortlessly popping it off (like I'd seen so many times in advertisements and you tube videos) it simply fell off the jar.
It was kind of like finding out the Wizard was really the dork behind the curtain.
After a couple more unsuccessful attempts, we were done.
There was no way I was going to impose a dubious piece of...equipment on my mother.
It would only serve to frustrate and piss her off (Merry freakin' Christmas!).
So I packed this thing back up to return it (returning things to Amazon is easy) and asked her what she would prefer. She surprised me by opting for a new Echo. She saw mine in action, and was sold (I happen to have a first generation Eco).
Funny thing was, in my consideration of what to get her, I'd rejected the idea of getting her an Echo, since any 'technological' gifts never really `seemed to work out.
Well, sir.
This 85 year-old lady took to her Amazon Echo like a duck to water, and Alexa is her new best friend.
She still struggle with jars, but she's enjoying her favorite music, so she doesn't care.
Works great for what it is.

Arrived very fast as expected in OEM packaging. Seller was accurate and faithful.
Product seems pretty great. Bought for someone else so can't speak to day to day use. But did test to see if it was appropriate for the person to use who has difficulty opening jars.
Testing went well. It opened all typical jars with no effort or need for assistance from the person except to hold on to the base of the jar or be prepared to catch the device if it falls off the jar (with the lid). As described by other reviewers if the sides of the jar are too tapered, the user will have to hold the device down onto the lid to make sure the jar opener doesn't fall off until it gets a chance to open the lid. This required minimal effort and should not over tax a user even if they don't have hand strength.
I was surprised to find that this even opened a plastic lid on a prego sauce jar with the perforated security band. It snapped through the security band and opened the lid with no problem. Just keep in mind it is very slow and found it easily can take 30 seconds or longer to get itself in gear before even starting to turn the lid. Not a problem in my opinion, but just to be aware.
Took off one star because it doesn't open lids smaller than 1 inch (water, soda). Not how it was designed or advertised, but still a big design omission. And that if you're not prepared to catch it if it falls off the jar (after opening a lid) then it might easily land on a hard surface and break. But it definitely works.
