Nice but if you ride a lot, wait for USB batteries
by Commutergirl (4 out of 5 stars)

Ok, so, I like the visibility.

The package comes in a thick plastic bag. All pieces in orderly fashion. I opened it and found the directions to be slightly lacking. I went to Yuotube and found a video on the bike hookup. It was awesome. Still had to play with design and colors to figure it out.

When you put it on the wheels, be sure you have the zip ties and electronic board on the inside of the spokes. Especially on back wheel. You don't want to mess with the gear changer.

I ride 45 miles per day, roundtrip to work and back. I feel the hightened visibility keeps me safer. That said, there are still a few out there that behave like moths to a flame so stay conscious of them drifting toward you as they look. I have had one so far, smh.

I ride in very cold temperatures, 29 degrees so far this year, and the lights keep working! I hope it does better in lower temps, unlike iphone.

Everybody thinks this thing is awesome, including me.

I've reviewed ML products before, and this one is just as good as I've grown to expect. EVERYBODY looks when I ride my bicycle at night. I get a lot of car horns and waves. I get almost too much attention if I ride in a public place. In fact, these things look so cool that it's difficult to focus my attention on the road sometimes.

As an electrical engineer with most of my experience in quality assurance, I give these guys perfect marks for their construction. The product is durable, water-resistant, and very very cool. There are no "extra parts," no "weak points," and no gimmicky features that jack the price up. I know exactly how this product works; I even have all of the parts needed to assemble my own right on my home workbench.. but doing so would take me a whole weekend and cost more than simply buying one, and it still wouldn't be as well-made.

I've also complimented them by email, and they are very friendly communicative people; so on the rare occasion that you actually have a problem, I have no doubt that they'd work with you to sort it out.

Neat product, but has downsides too.

I bought 2 of these for Burning Man and they are a great product in many ways. They are super bright and I like that you can easily "program" them to a variety of great patterns and colors. This lets you choose what will work best for the occasion, and also lets you make your bike easily identifiable to friends when you ride by in the dark. But there are also downsides. The "pattern" aspect doesn't really work well unless you're riding quite fast. And even then it won't look as nice as the product picture. Also, you really need to turn them off whenever you park on the playa both to keep the batteries from draining and because they just don't look good when stationary. Also these are a bit expensive (though getting cheaper all the time), especially if you want to do both wheels with 2 M232's each (I only had one on each wheel). As much as I like the company and the product, I think if I did it again I would just do a normal LED light spiral. It's cheaper, looks better when stopped or going slow (IMHO), and the batteries last many tens of hours so I can leave them on when I park (at festivals) and easily find my bike later at night. Also, I bought these 6 months ago and MonkeyLectric is still spamming me with promotions that I never asked for and don't want. I'm still giving this four stars as I think it would be a great solution for some people in some circumstances.

Be careful when you're being awesome
by L B (4 out of 5 stars)

I coveted these for a long time but they seemed pricey and I was worried that they'd get stolen because everything on a bike gets stolen. Not to worry about stolen: once they're on, they're ON. They're also pretty discreet when they're turned off.

Installation: bit of a bitch and the button system is a little confusing but my 11 year old figured it out right away.

I live in Vancouver where it rains constantly and I ride every day; so far they've held up. I haven't tried to change batteries yet. That looks tricky.

You have to pedal pretty fast and you seem to need two M232 panels to make that "full wheel" lighting effect shown in the promo pictures. It's a total motivator to pedal faster but I must admit I've had a few near-misses trying to catch a glimpse of my wheel in passing window reflections. You gotta be careful when you're being awesome.

So I was cycling home last night when a passing car slows down, rolls down their window, and hollers out at me as I'm trying to get my MonkeyLights spinning faster: "Thanks for the lights, man!"

Huge puff of skunky smoke billowed out at the same time. They waved and drove off. True story.

Britght but hard to get a good image from 1 panel LED
by Scrutinizing Buyer (3 out of 5 stars)
August 23, 2016

These lights are bright but they do not display images well due to the fact that they only have one panel of LEDs and to get any kind of display to show up you need to travel at about 16 MPH or so or forget about a casual ride and getting a good view of displayed images. Spend a few more bucks and get the 4 panel Xuanwheel X1 and they are Bluetooth capable.

They look good in the dark when you are going pretty fast ...
by Stephen J. Mytyk (4 out of 5 stars)

They look good in the dark when you are going pretty fast but in slow traffic it's just a strip of lights on the wheel. A second pair would double the awesomeness. Installation on the first wheel was a bit troublesome but once you do the first one the second one is simple. You will probably want to add an additional tie-wrap around the battery unit and the spokes to keep the battery unit from slipping -- see the attached picture.

Very good, still recommend it, but it has some small downsides.

It's beautiful and a very good quality product. But unfortunately the images don't show up fully as they report it in their ad. You can see parts of the animation in the wheel. The images don't show in the whole wheel, be aware! We tried in many different speeds. On the upside, the leds are VERY bright, and it actually helps me when the front light is off batteries. You can use them in a very dark trail and get back home, which is also cool/helpful. The setting system is still a mistery for me. I've tried to select the exact same lights in the chart but it never goes to the image I want. But they are all very beautiful and lively, and the product has a good finishing... overall, a great purchase!! Just thought the image setting system would be better and that the whole wheel would be lighted at the same time.

Confusing installation documents
by Capiture (2 out of 5 stars)

Would not purchase again mainly due to poor instructions and waste of my life in trying to figure this out.

I'm great at putting stuff together, however the poor instructions provided with this unit made it much more confusing than it needed to be and thus created lots of frustration during installation.

At $60 a piece ($120 for both wheels), you'd assume a link to a good YouTube instruction + at least the AA batteries.

I purchased similar products for my other bike for $30 and it came with all the above.

Sadly, the existing user generated YouTube clips also are not helpful as each has done it their own way and lacks consistency.

Again, good product, easy install once you figure it out, but be ready to get frustrated and spend some time to install these.

It does not have to be this way. Simple and clear video would help!

Light up the ground with two sets
by teenie,Top Contributor: Pets (4 out of 5 stars)

I purchased this set of lights and the usb charging ones. I hooked both up on my front wheel of my electric bike.

I used the usb charging unit on the bike to simplify the battery charging. There are two book ups on the battery that connects to the hub. This works great for added light around my front wheel.

I have my lights scroll through all 42 designs, when you come to the red colors it's not as bright on the road. I do ride almost only after dark, the road where I live is in the country, nothing but cornfields and cows, but cars are going fast and tons of them.

This along with a safety vest, headlight, taillight, and and a second headlight keep me seen easier. I have noticed cars see me and dim the headlights much sooner.

This is a great light for others to see as you go past. Ok use my bike every night, and have had no issues at all. Now I need to find something for my face with all the bugs, they blast my face. I wear glasses and have a very old pair from the eighties, large frame that helps the bugs stay out of my eyes, but when going 30 miles an hour and bugs hit your face they smart.

Two Lights are Better Than Four
by Happy Fella (4 out of 5 stars)
October 9, 2018

The glowing reviews and a few YouTube videos sold me on giving these lights a try. I installed a set on my Giant hybrid bike, and even the lower intensity is brighter than I imagined!

I actually bought four lights because several reviewers reported that 2 lights per wheel makes the image look fuller, even when you're peddling at slow-moderate paces.

But there are downsides. I discovered that when you try to run 2 lights from one battery pack, one of the Monkey lights will be noticeably duller. Plus, as others have discovered, you can't use the random mode. You have to pick a pattern and stay with it.

Plan B? Attach two lights and two battery packs to each wheel hub. This will mean more batteries to charge or change out, but you'll have plenty of bling. However, because it is difficult to synchronize the colors, what you'll probably end up with is a psychedelic collage, that may or may not 'Wow' you.

After seeing how brilliant they were, I decided on using one light per wheel. Plus, trying to sync 4 light sets every time I ride at night would soon be a nuisance.

The other consideration was aesthetics. My wheels are at least 26", and 2 lights and 2 battery packs per wheel looked gawdy to me. Ultimately, you want a bike with LED lights on it; not LED lights with a bike behind it. Plus, my bike hosts a small Bluetooth speaker, an Incredibell, a cell phone holder, a rear-view mirror, and a light.
