Best lego set I have ever builtby Lee (5 out of 5 stars)
November 25, 2012
This is an amazing Lego set and I had a ton of fun building it. I am a huge LotR/ Hobbit fan and this is easily the best of the bunch Lego has released for the license. It captures Bilbo's house wonderfully and there are tons of unique pieces to this set, along with a bunch of details that show a lot of love went into designing this. Such details as a fireplace and chimney, a stovetop with pots, a broom, a lantern, several potions, a treasure chest, plates, food items, a bench, table, I could go on and on. But my favorite detail has to be Bilbo's table where he writes There and Back Again, along with the book, ink jar, and feathered pen. Really nice touch! I also really like that the front door can be opened along with the front gate. The front door even has a little scratch painted on it where Gandalf wrote on the door to let the dwarves know the house where the meeting with the burglar was to take place. ;)
The minifigures themselves are great. You get Bilbo, Gandalf, Balin, Dwalin, Bofur, and Bombur. I love that Dwalin comes with a large battle hammer, and I like how Lego made Bombur fat with an extra piece, and he also comes with a little sausage and cooking pot. Bofur's hat and mining pick are awesome as well. Like I said, some really nice touches.
I should mentioned that the top part of Bilbo's house can easily come off and this was done on purpose so that the inside can be played around with. Thats fine by me, as the house does have a few blocks that will attach the top to a secure fit so that it wont slide off if you move the set
The set came with 652 pieces, and I took my time and spent a late night completing it, probably around 3-4 hours. This was really satisfying to build and was a lot of fun. . Overall, I really did feel I got my $70 worth of Legos and a lot of great minis.
As always I was happy with Amazon, fast shipping and the preorder was sent to me before the official date, so I was really surprised to get it a whole week early.
If I had to nit pick, I wish I got a couple of more tree leaf pieces to make the tree on top of the house a bit more lush, but luckily I have some spare pieces from other sets that I can put in.
Bottom line: If you are a lego and lotr/hobbit fan, and could only pick one set, this is your must have set. No questions ask. Unless you hate the Bag End, you will not be disappointed. I feel Bag End was one of the most iconic things from LotR/ Hobbit and this set really captures that look. Easily my favorite Lego set ever.

Great design, poor brick quality

Great design, and the kids really looked forward to playing with it. Unfortunately, this kit came with the most brittle bricks/pieces I've ever run across in 3+ decades of using LEGO-I broke 15+ pieces (cracks, stress fractures, or complete dot/corner sections snapped off) while building the kit using the usual gentle pressure & correct piece alignment. This is the only time I've needed to use superglue to fix or repair any LEGOs, old or new, and it's highly likely to have additional breaks while the kids play with it in the future. Cool kit, but very disappointing and unusually poor quality.
One of the best LEGO sets ever!

This could very well be the best LEGO set of 2012. And, when you compare uniqueness, features, the build, playability, likeness to the real thing, price, and minifigs it could be the best LEGO set EVER. If not the best it is definitely one of the best. Yup, that is saying a lot. But, when you consider what is wanted from a LEGO toy this set delivers in every way.
If you have seen the LOTR movies, or the Hobbit movie, you will recognize the set immediately. It's Bilbo's house at Bag End. So, of course Biblo is one of the minifigs. But, not just Bilbo. You get 4 dwarfs and Gandalf the Grey too. The likeness to Bilbo's house is amazing. Not sure how it could be made better. The windows are great. The inside is great. It comes with bottles, a table, chairs, carrots, flowers, bowls, and more. The dwarfs and Bilbo have weapons.
The build is fun, nothing about it is repetitive. There are two instruction books and they are easy to follow and well done. Typical for LEGO.
The minifigs are great. The way each dwarf looks like the movie character is simply amazing. Such likeness for a 1 inch LEGO minifig!
You get the outside of the house and the inside too. So, when you figure in that with the accessories and minifigs I think a child's imagination has a lot to work with. Let the fun begin.
Awesome Details!!!

I am a LOTR and Hobbit fan. This set is one of the best I've ever assembled. The detail is fabulous! Everything is there down to Bilbo's writing corner with a book. The pathway up to the garden is fabulous. Bilbo has a little carrot garden and a bench outside. The roof is detachable and the table sits six! Set: 10/10 stars
The minifigures that are included in this set are great. There is Gandalf with wizard hat and 5 exclusive minifigs, Bilbo in Shire outfit, Balin, Dwalin, Bofur, and Bombur. I would have liked it if they included Bifur (who comes exclusively with the Attack of the Wargs set) as he is cousin of Bofur and Bombur. Ithought it was a bit annoying that you have to buy almost every set to get all of the dwarves. I thought this set should include 5-6 dwarves instead of four. 8/10 stars minifigs.
All in all I would give this set a 10/10 rating. After all the set is the main attraction not the minifigs, right.
What Unexpected Fun!

I got this for my son's birthday. He loves Legos and The Hobbit so this was the perfect gift. He was thrilled by the detail and the fact that it had so many pieces. He's 7 so he's technically under the recommended age but his dad helped him assemble it which made it even more fun to put together.
While this isn't an "educational" toy I did give it a rating of three stars or its educational value because my son did have to learn to be patient and carefully follow the instructions in order to assemble it properly. For a 7 year old boy, that is an extremely valuable lesson!
The detail is great on this set. The door to Bilbo's house even has Gandalf's mark which my husband didn't notice at first until my son pointed out that it was upside down. That dwarves faces are also very detailed and can be turned to have different facial expressions.
If you love The Hobbit (and Legos) as much as my family does then this is the set for you!
Captures Bag End perfectly

I really don't know how lego does it. All of their Hobbit set are top-of-the-line quality, and this one is no exception. This set is Shire through and through. Lego manages the pack and cram Bag End into this smaller than scale smial (hobbit-hole). The inside includes a small fireplace that can be enhanced using extra pieces, garden, a table with seating for all included minifigures, the famous Red Book and quill, broom and other special touches. The set is very well built structurally , even though the roof comes off. Some special exterior touches include circular windows, circular green door that even has Gandalf's special mark, a dwarven 'g', and a tree growing on top. This set captures both the Shire and Bag End in one fell swoop.
A Good Start to the Story and a Lego LotR Collection

If you're going to buy one Lego LotR set, you might as well start at the beginning. This set is a very nice rendition of Bilbo's home as seen in the beginning of The Hobbit. It's also featured at the start of Fellowship of the Ring. There are a number of nice details like the fireplace, Bilbo's reading stand, and the maps of Middle Earth that make it look like a comfortable hobbit hole. If you want to assemble the entire Company of Thorin, this set will also start you off with five of the fourteen characters, more than any other single set: Bilbo, obviously, and four dwarves, including my favorite -- Dwalin and his huge war hammer. The set is much less action-oriented than many of the other combat sets like Helm's Deep and the Warg Attack, but that's the way it should be when you're talking about a hobbit hole.
Overall, it's a well-designed set that was a blast to assemble. I'm looking forward to getting the rest of the Company and recreating the dinner party scene from the beginning of the movie.
One of the best Lego sets

Of all the sets that I've bought, built, and owned, this is without a doubt one of the best, second only to the Lego Tower of Orthanc, in my opinion at least. The pure aesthetic of this set is really without equal, the Lego group really out did themselves with this one.
It's beautiful!! Given how crazy she is about LOTR

I gifted this ot my sister-in-law for her birthday and we all sat together as family and assembled half of this set. They took the half assembled set and did the rest at home. It's beautiful!! Given how crazy she is about LOTR, she was almost in tears when she saw it all done. Any LOTR or Hobbit fan - must have this. Even though it's slightly expensive, I think it's worth it cause its you'll have it all your life and then you can pass it on to other Hobbit geeks ;)

I love this set. I wish I were still a kid! At least my son will enjoy it.
This set comes with a good amount of very detailed minifigures. Balin is such an awesome figure with the saturated red and white beard/hair piece. I am astonished at the quality of the many pieces. All in all, the set is sturdy and is with such detail. It is one of my favorite sets of all time, and that's saying something as Brickset lists my total collection of Legos since childhood at $18,000! Good thing I got most of them on sale...
