I wanted to love this but...

After having this for a season I have to say it's just not B&D quality.

The battery is not an issue. It lasts and charges quickly so no issue with that. The problem is that it's just so weak, no power. It'll barely blow grass from the driveway. Come fall, don't even think about moving a leaf. Even with the power at full (6 for this model?) it just can't muster the power to move even the smallest job.

In addition the air intake will clog all of the time. If you are right handed the air intake is on the left side of the unit so it pulls in your clothing as you carry it. So, you have to hold it at least 6-8 inches away from you body. Very uncomfortable.

So if you need this to do any blowing or even moderate sweeping, look elsewhere. Hope this review was helpful.

Excellent, with one small (solvable) issue
by SDR (4 out of 5 stars)

I use this as a vacuum (not as a blower) and it works quite well. It's very light and easy to carry. Fairly strong suction. The material is sucked up the long (and very sturdy) plastic tubing, into a component with rotating "blades" which provide the suction (and, I think, act as a mulcher, breaking up large items into smaller pieces), and from there it is all sucked into the bag. The reason for 4 stars, rather than 5, is that sometimes, when you switch off the motor, small pieces of material drop back out onto the ground. This happened, for example, when I was vacuuming our driveway to remove pine needles that had fallen when we were discarding our Christmas tree. They get sucked into the barrel, and are held there - but drop out as soon as you shut off the motor. It's as though they are being held inside the plastic barrel by a suction-created vortex, but are NOT being sucked into the collection bag. As soon as you shut off the motor, the vortex is lost and the small pieces fall out. I've learned to (mostly) avoid the problem by keeping the motor running, raising the unit so that the plastic barrel is about 45 degrees above-horizontal, and simultaneously rotating the unit so that the barrel is at the top (bladed bit & motor at the bottom). This (I think) causes the small bits of material to move to the top part of the barrel, then into the "mulcher", then into the bag. Bottom line: if you're looking for super-strong suction, look elsewhere; but if you want a light and reasonably effective yard vacuum, this is ideal.

Good for small leaves - such as pecans and oaks ...
by Steve Wildman (1 out of 5 stars)

As a blower - it blows. First off the power is about that of a strong hair dryer. It struggles to move large leaves such as magnolia or hollies. Good for small leaves - such as pecans and oaks and holly berries. Because of the weak power, it's actually good for blowing our flower beds or small debris - that's about it's best use. But if you have a Miss Clairol blow dryer - use that instead.

As a vacuum, yes, it sucks. It's actually good on most leaves, but not on berries or acorns. Sucks them up a bit, then gives up and they come tumbling up. Found it helps to lift the vacuum end up in the air to left the berries, acorns fall down.

The worst thing is the battery/charger. I bought mine in October. So assuming weekly use, the battery and/or charger have failed - 9 months use and to replace it's about $100.

Probably smarter to buy a gas or a corded model for the real work and augment with a hair dryer or small fan or something more cost effective.

Ideal way to pick up leaves & dirt & cobwebs etc. for garden with mulch & pebbles
by Yasmin Mansoor (5 out of 5 stars)

I am so glad I found this worth trying despite many concerning reviews as my need was so urgent to find a LESS STRONG THAN USUAL LEAF VACUUM IDEAL TO ENABLE ONE STEP CLEANING & CLEARING YARD leaves & dirt as lower power/speed means it hardly ever takes any pebbles & mostly minimal mulch at the same time as leaves & dirt get very efficiently cleaned up. A BIG DOWNSIDE I DISCOVERED OF MOST BLOWING IS A LOT OF DIRT & DUST JUST GETS MOVED AROUND, MUCH OF WHICH SETTLES BACK DOWN ON YOUR PROPERTY, WHILE HELPFUL/IMPORTANT TOP SOIL BECOMES INCREASINGLY REMOVED EACH TIME HIGH SPEED BLOWING HAPPENS unless it is done with extreme care which most gardeners don't have time or patience or the caring needed to provide.

SO, TO WATCH THE TRUE CLEANING POWER OF THIS AWESOME CORDLESS LEAF VACUUM KEEPS BEING NOTHING SHORT OF AMAZING if you keep the battery well charged & the lights on it showing level of charge make that super easy to do. And by having one extra rechargeable battery on hand, it makes it even easier as it usually recharges fully within about 30 minutes which is about the run time of the other or then provides a good rest break reminder for you & the machine, time which can also be well used doing some weeding or other yard work.

WHAT I LOVE MOST IS IT HAS BEEN VERY WELL DESIGNED TO ENABLE EASY PICK-UP OF EVERYTHING INCLUDING MAPLE LEAVES & OTHER LARGER & EXTRA LONG KEAVES EVEN WHEN MANY OF THOSE HAVE ACCUMULATED, without clogging the collection tube or struggling unless the battery is running down. So by starting on the high leaf collection areas first or scooping some of those out manually to reduce unnecessary load on the leaf vac or doing a quick clean-up more often in times or areas of tons of leaves dropping, IT HAS KEPT WORKING LIKE A CHARM DESPITE MY PETITE SIZE USUALLY MAKING MOST MANUAL EQUIPMENT TOUGH TO HANDLE, not even many supposedly lightweight cordless house vacuums unless they have been very well designed for proper weight distribution & ergonomics & practical efficiencies in maneuvrability & results.

AND I'VE BEEN LOVING THE MULCHER DESPITE HAVING INITIALLY THOUGHT I DID NOT NEED THAT FEATURE, but it does make fairly high volume leaf collection way faster & more efficient.

Recommend this for desert landscapes
by Karen Thayer (5 out of 5 stars)
April 24, 2018

I love this outdoor sweeper/vacuum because I live in the desert where small rocks replace grass in landscapes. This van is the only one I have tried that will pick up pollen and small mesquite leaves and blooms without also picking up the 1/2 in rock that serves as the base of the landscape. The battery lasts about 1/2 hour, which is just enough time to do the yard before I get tired. An extra battery helps if I have a lot of pollen to pick up. I love not dragging a cord around. And the weight is perfect. I get a nice workout for arms. It is easy to rinse the bag off.

This will not work well if leaves ar wet and/or there are pills of leaves to pick up. It will jam up. Jams aren't hard to fix, but they can be a pain if they are constantly happening.

It is perfect for small yards an patios that have small pieces of leaves or pollen to pick up. I use mine every day in the Spring when the mesquite and Pablo verde leaves start to bloom. It is not too loud, either. The battery takes about a half hour to charge.

No sucking power and breaks easy. Be careful!
by Amanda Cohen (1 out of 5 stars)

This was my second one of the year as the first one broke after sucking up a wood chip. I must be a sucker for punishment because I bought another one. This was has stopped working as well. This device has very little sucking power- which was the primary reason we got. Honestly, I'm surprised it was able to pick up that wood chip. I guess the quest continues to find a decent sucker. We use them around our pool, but this was nearly worthless. Couldn't suck up leaves or the flowers from the trees. It couldn't get up mulch or most chips. I guess I'm better off without it in the long run as it was very frustrating to use because of the lack of power. It also died after about 10 minutes of use which wasn't such a big deal as we have two batteries for black and decker. But again, breaks easy and not a lot of sucking power. Never tried it as a blower but I'd imagine you'd be better off with a real leaf blower given the lack of strength with the sucking ability. I'm not kidding- couldn't even pick up a leaf. Oh well, that was about 120 bucks down the drain.

Wish I would've bought the 60-volt version
by matthew (1 out of 5 stars)
September 12, 2018

I also own a 40-volt trimmer (which works great) so thought I'd get the 40-volt blower and share batteries. BIG MISTAKE. This thing hardly has enough power to blow my lawn clippings.

I have a tree-covered deck and this blower can only handle the smallest of sticks. I end up needing to use a broom instead. One other minor complaint is the vent keeps trying to inhale my shorts (I'm right handed). So I have to use it left handed or hold it out from my body pretty far.

While I love the smaller pouch for the vac, too bad it's not strong enough to work well on my grass clippings. I've completely given up on using the vacuum feature - it takes forever because it only vacuums a few blades at a time

I wish I would've gotten a blower/vac with more power.

The idea was not to pull out an electric cord due to safety issue with the water and make it somethi
by D. Pierpont (1 out of 5 stars)
June 25, 2017

I knew this wouldn't be a very powerful tool, but I figured it should be able to pick up dry leaves that collect around my pool. The idea was not to pull out an electric cord due to safety issue with the water and make it something that if it was easy I would do it more often. Once charged I gave it a whirl and it seems to do pretty well. But each time I used it the performance decreased rapidly. I also had to constantly go and clean out leaf stem fibers from the fan. If it had continued to perform as well as the first two times I would keep it, but now it's so bad there is very little sucktion even at the highest speed. (You really can only use the high speed for either the vacuum or the blower) I did use the blower too and it was very weak. I think now that other manufactures are using 60v batteries this could make this a better option. I wish B&D had done more testing before putting this out there. I'm back to using my B&D corded 240 mph leaf and vacuum. Despite the safety and lugging the cord around it definitely made quick work of the leaves. Oh well.

SERIOUS disappointment
by handytim (1 out of 5 stars)
July 19, 2018

I really had high hopes for this tool, and I'm not a guy who likes giving bad reviews. Unfortunately, this unit is so weak as to be nonfunctional, except perhaps for Pablo Escobar's production floor. Suction is abysmal and it clogs every 40-70 seconds. I did not use it as a blower. Ergos are good and I like the overall design, but it needs a LOT more juice. I spend a lot of time in the yard and have regular experience with a broad selection of powered yard tools, but this one is a fail. Quite frankly a grand old company such as B+D should not have their name on this.

Don't buy it
by Cindy (1 out of 5 stars)
December 10, 2018

I used the leaf blower to blow all the leaves to 1 area of the yard. The highest setting is 6 & even on that there wasn't alot of power to blow the leaves. Sometimes I had to use my foot to get the leaf unstuck out of the grass to then blow it across the yard. Raking would've almost been faster. But that's better that the vac/mulch part. First of leaves get stuck in the intake tube especially big ones. I avoid those & let the wind take care of them. So now I have to pick & choose the leaves. Second the mulcher doesn't mulch well at all. Sometimes whole leaves come out. Other times they're chopped tiny. Third it CLOGS ALOT!! Either the intake tube gets clogged or the output tube into the bag gets clogged. It's ALWAYS one or the other without fail. I keep a stick in my pocket to help unclog it & that doesn't always work because it's smooth plastic. The problem is the deisgn. The intake tube is about 3' long & then goes to a 45 degree angle into the housing unit. After that the discharge tube is angled just enough to prevent a smooth exit. EVERY time I empty the bag I take it off the housing unit to unclog it. I din't even snap it on bc it's hard to get off. I have a very bad shoulder & back. That's the only reason why I bought this. Raking is very hard for me but I don't think this is much better. The battery lasts a 1/2 hour at best at least what I've experienced it so far. Also don't vacuum alot of leaves up at one time. It's almost as if it can only handle 1-3 leaves at a time. Then it needs a split second to clear and then it's good. I've learned the slower the better but then it takes 2-3 times as long to do the job. And it still will clog. Luckily I have the time to spare but if you need a job done quick this isn't the machine. Had I known all this prior to buying I wouldn't have bought it. And I have a very small yard - maybe 1/4 acre at most. It takes only 30 minutes to mow so maybe that'll help tell how small it is. I like B&D products but am disappointed in this one.
