Not a project for beginners, but this hinge is perfect!

This was not an easy product but overall the hinge is great and was fun to work with to make my own secret bookshelf door. We ended up sinking the hinge into the door itself to minimize the gap between the shelf and the floor. We used trim to hide the side and top gaps. It looks great and you can't tell anything is behind it at all. Anyone who says the hinge isn't hidden just didn't install it in a way to actually hide it.

Way Over-Engineered. Silky smooth operation on a heavy bookcase door.

Way over engineered, as I like it! I built a 48" wide, 6'-8" high hidden bookcase door for my home theater. Depth of the bookcase is wall-width for 2x6 framing. I set the bottom hinge into a concrete slab floor using Tracon concrete screws....4" long if I recall, and the top is mounted into dimensional framing. Zero sagging in a year and a half. I was a little hesitant on the price, but now can heartily recommend the kit.

There's a video attached that shows the finished product....after three years or so.

Not the best but good enough for who it's for! (Me)

Works great, no schematic or details with hinge . Website has basic setback info. Comes with a stop ....no directions for it.

First of all, building a hidden bookcase door is ...

First of all, building a hidden bookcase door is not a novice project. The company provides some basic instructions, but you can plan on having to adapt them based on your wall, opening size, depth of flush mount, trim design, etc. That said, I had a semi-flush bookcase (ok, billiard cue and gear case) built and installed in a day. I first built a quick mock up of the bottom hinge to check clearances, and once I had that working, everything else just clicked as to how it had to go together.

The top pin turns to lock and can't fall out, nor can it get loose, unless you've installed it incorrectly. The bottom hinge glides smoothly. The catch is adjustable once installed to the amount of 'catch' is needed.

Tip: I secured the threshold last, as I used that to adjust the door so it was level.

Not very hidden
by Amazon Customer (3 out of 5 stars)

It works but it isn't hidden. The gap required to allow the bookcase to swing out makes it very, very obvious that something is behind the bookcase. Perhaps if the application was for a bookcase that swung in, it might have worked better. In my case it was okay because I was just hiding a storm shelter door for cosmetic reasons. If you actually want something to be hidden, I would use a different product. This was installed by a professional, experienced carpenter.

Item arrived on time. Item was installed on a different size shelf as for whay the manufacturer suggests. The hardware was installed on a smaller and wider size shelf. The hardware works great.

I didnt use the door catch mechanism it came with to hold the shelf (door). The door catch mechanism allowed the shelf to have a slight jiggle, which I didnt like. I purchased a set of CMS round magnets (70 pounds) to hold the shelf door and worked better. No more jighle and had a solid hold to it.

I am loving that I pulled this off myself

I would say my skills are intermediate when fixing/renovating stuff around the house. I came across the idea of a hidden bookshelf door when finishing by basement instead of putting a door in a wall that would only be opened once or twice a year. My woodworking skills are beginner but I built a solid oak(3/4") bookshelf and then installed these hinges. The dimensions were different from the instructions so doing the mock up(used a piece of cheap plywood as the bottom of the shelf and attached the hinges and swung it open and closed) was the right way to go so I could get the dimensions correct. I focused on getting the width correct to make sure there was enough clearance to swing it. I found the directions a little difficult to understand as my package did not come with any but referenced their website where you can print them off. Plan, check measurements, plan again, and check measurements again. When I finally went to install it completely it went so incredibly smooth it was unbelievable. I have neighbors asking me to build one for them. I am going to build another one and will be ordering another set.

A lot of money for little harware & even less instructions
by beaker86 (3 out of 5 stars)

This vendor making a killing on this hardware package. Basically paying $150 for the hinges, (As I've just installed I'll have to come back and let you know how long they last.) some screws and a stop. The stop I still haven't figured out. If you watch the video they claim new & improved? No instruction on where or how the 3 bolts are placed? I have to re-adjust every day. looking for a better way to keep closed. looking at using magnets. The lack of instructions is somewhat annoying, I just put them where I thought they should and went with it.

Good Product-- terrible directions.
by B (3 out of 5 stars)

The product works as expected but the instructions are terrible. It's almost like they lost focus half way through the directions. They start out great but then just stop instructing. Examples: 1. There are four separate hinge parts-- they provide templates for 3 of them. They do not provide a template for the hinge on the top of the door. They also do not tell you that you have to drill through the top of the door to put the pin in (or tell you what size drill bit to use) but show a picture of the hole in the final step. Some of the instructions are subtle and obviously came from customer comments (like a note at the bottom saying the hinge will go over the top of frame). Again, I don't blame them for this, if you tell me things, it's my duty to read everything and find it in there. They could benefit from a good technical writer however. Finally, the pin that is put in for the final step really doesn't go in and turn. It works fine but once it's in, it's permanent so make sure you have everything you want the way you want it before putting it in. Now that I've done it once (and never will again), I would probably just get supplies and do it myself without buying the hardware. The hardware is good quality but not worth the price. It's basically 4 metal plates and a pin. I think I spent more time trying to follow the directions. That being said, it's not easy so there is no way I could do it on my own without struggling through it with their directions the first time. For reference, I made an outswing bookcase door.

Hinges worked very well and smooth. It does take more than a novice skill level.
