Product Description

FakeTV is a burglar deterrent that recreates the light of a real HDTV television. So from outside, it looks just like someone is home watching TV. Most burglars do not target occupied houses. Why risk prison? So when a prowler sees that flickering glow that means someone is home watching TV, he knows to move on to an easier target. So, FakeTV makes a break-in less likely. Our model FTV-11 is three times brighter than our model FTV-10 and FTV-7 FakeTV's built-in computer controls 12 super-bright LEDs that fill a room with light. It accurately simulates scene changes, fades, and on-screen motion, in thousand of possible shades of color, just like real TV. A built-in light sensor turns FakeTV on at dusk, and it can be set to turn off after four or seven hours. The dynamic light from FakeTV conveys the impression of "alive" in a way that a light on a timer cannot. Consumes just the power of a night light. AC Adapter included.

FakeTV, Real Results!
by ReeserRoo (5 out of 5 stars)

After a rash of vehicle break-ins in our community, I've been hunting for low-cost, common sense security measures to keep our cars safer at night. In my search, I happened across this FakeTV from Hydreon and snapped one up straight away. The light ships in a small box, complete with multi-lingual instructions (English pictured) and a five foot power cord.

Setup is a breeze; you simply connect the light to the two pronged power cable, plug it in, and select your setting (Always On; Dusk + 7 Hrs; Dusk + 4; Off). I keep ours on the +7 setting in a room upstairs facing the street. Note that it doesn't have to be too dark in the room for the light sensor to respond, so be warned that the FakeTV may click on a bit earlier in the evening than you might think (meaning that it may shut off earlier than you might think as well).

Looking up at our windows where the product is placed, you'd never know that the light being emitted from the room was from anything but a big, vivid television screen. The 12 LEDs are super bright, and the flickering patterns they produce are extremely authentic. Power consumption for this item is advertised as being really low, and it doesn't get hot over time-which is paramount as you'll most likely use the FakeTV when you're either asleep in another room or away from home altogether! All told, I'm really pleased with this purchase, and while there's no guarantee that this will keep our cars completely safe... I'd like to believe that it's an easy, affordable discouragement to all but the boldest of criminals.

Feel free to leave me a comment or question, I'm happy to add anything else you'd like to know about the product. Thanks for taking the time to read my review, hopefully this information was useful!

FakeTV Is Better Than Real TV
by William R. Nanney (5 out of 5 stars)

I bought one of these to put in a vacant rental property. On the first night I got a call from a nearby older property owner wanting to know when the new renter moved in, who they were, and where they worked. I really struggled with telling them that it was FakeTV. I didn't really want them to know that the house was still empty and would be for another few weeks. That person was so impressed with the illusion of someone being in residence that they asked if I would get them one too. On my next Amazon order, I got them their own FakeTV and showed them how it works. The way I see it, the more homes in the neighborhood look occupied, the less likely the neighborhood is to have a break-in problem. All of the property owners win. By the way, I've since used this in my home while on vacation. Combine FakeTV with with a couple of small lamps on random timers and it looks like I never left home.

FakeTV FTV-11 Extra Bright . . . . brighter but narrower.

Made well. Easy to use.

Now have 2-FTV10s and 1-FTV11. Positioned both in a room pointed to a window with closed blinds. The FTV11 appeared brighter from outside that window. Inside the room the FTV10 appeared to have a wider beam pattern and was more effective in covering windows in adjacent walls of a corner room. The FTV11 is most effective when pointed at a single window.

Very Convincing TV Simulator
by Gadget Freak (5 out of 5 stars)
February 16, 2017

For those times when my wife and I are out late or may leave our house overnight, I worried about the house looking obviously empty. I was using a simple lamp on a timer but we wanted something that would make it appear more likely that a real person may actually be inside. This "Fake TV" light (model FTV-11) is very convincing in my opinion. I am using this to simulate our 48" flat screen TV and it does make it appear the "real" TV is on. I had to experiment a bit with this light to make it appear like our TV was on. We have floor length, foam backed, insulated drapes in the room with the TV. With those drapes closed, I put this device right at the base of my TV and aimed it directly at the curtains. The "flickering" and color changing lights from this device did make it appear that our TV was on in that room and someone was home watching TV. It has even fooled our neighbors that know us. So far, we have used this for one overnight departure from our home and our friends in the neighborhood thought we were home watching TV. They are now considering getting one too. I am using this device with a separate electronic timer that is plugged into an electrical outlet so I am ONLY using the on and off switch on this device. I do not use the "turn on at dusk" switch or the "4 or 7 hour on" time switch so I cannot comment on those features. For me, using the separate electronic timer, this device works very well so far. I have not owned this long enough to attest to its reliability but if it continues to work as well as it has so far, I like what it does and would recommend it. As an added benefit, I have also noticed that just sitting in my chair and watching the flickering lights from this device can be even more entertaining than many of the shows and commercials now on TV. But I digress. My opinions on that will be for another "review".

Works Great!
by bighedge (5 out of 5 stars)

We left town for a week and didn't want anyone to realize the house was empty, so we decided to try this out. I love the way it works. We positioned it towards the window, open the blinds just enough to let light out, and turn out the other lights. I went outside to see how it looked, and could not really tell the difference between this and the television. It maintains a somewhat constant glow with some intermittent flashes (scene changes, commercials, etc) but with colors that flash. There are two settings for seasonal light, so when the days are short, the Fake TV will stay on longer; during summer, when you have daylight until 9pm, you can set it to just stay on a couple hours. I would definitely recommend this product.

Inexpensive, easy-to-use device that sure LOOKS like somebody's watching TV.
by Ole Woodsman (5 out of 5 stars)

Arrived quickly in a well-packed box. The products' actual box is nicely printed. Inside, the illustrated directions are easy to understand and are in several languages.

Easy to use- select location, plug it in (long cord, too) and use the 4 position switch to select off, on+4 hrs, on+7hrs, or 'on right now'. The latter is good to test the unit and see what it looks like, which is actually too bright to comfortably look directly into. The light sensor triggered the unit when in dim, not completely dark, light conditions - placed atop the real TV at early dusk on the interior wall of room with plenty of natural light.

From outside it sure looks like a TV is going! There are 'slow' phases of the light sequence where it seems there are few changes happening, but not so long that a casual passerby would think the image had frozen. The FakeTV does not have a way to make it look like someone is actually getting up and moving around (BRB, snack run, etc) so shutting the drapes almost completely closed if this is on the first floor is a good idea.

FakeTV only has two apparent downsides: a power brownout might reset it to 'off' and there won't be the illusion any more (not so bad if you're only gone a short time but what about trips of a few weeks?); the other is in the case of a BOLD thief that actually comes up and knocks on the door (a common tactic in my neighborhood) to see if you're home and if there's no answer, you're about to see how good your homeowners' insurance is. Potential solutions: for brownouts, a small UPS that can also be used for the wireless router, an IP camera or other home security. For a bold thief, a 'Ring' or other brand video doorbell.

Love it. Use it all the time
by Grinchy (5 out of 5 stars)

4.5 stars: Love it. Use it all the time. Definitely bright enough that people walking/driving by would notice and assume you are home. I use it in a corner room so it is visible from both the front and side of house.

My only complaint is the color and flicker rate. I think modern TVs have a little more white light and a little less on the blue/green scale. Also, real TV shows that I watch don't flicker nearly that much. But hey, maybe potential intruders will assume I have a really old TV that isn't worth stealing, or that I'm the kind of tough guy who only ever watches 70's action films!

Honestly, even if it isn't perfect it still does what it is supposed to do- makes me feel more confident about being away from home when I live in a neighborhood with occasional break-ins.

This FakeTV is better than the other brands sold on Amazon as far ...
by Sassylady2001 (4 out of 5 stars)

This FakeTV is better than the other brands sold on Amazon as far as realism. I bought another brand and returned it. Then I read the reviews on this FakeTV and thought I'd give it a try. This is $35 and expensive for a piece of plastic and simple electronic brain. However, it is worth the $35 to have a more realistic appearance of someone home watching TV to discourage a burglar. I purchased two to install in my home before I took a trip, even though I have a monitored alarm system. I put both on timers, to start and stop at different times in different bedrooms. I have left them hooked up even after my trip as they take minimal power to run. In these days with increased crime rates, I prefer to have all the break-in deterrents I can install. I put them at 45 degrees toward my white sheers which are in front of white opaque curtains - one about 2' away from the curtain. I also have a small low wattage lamp about 4' to 6' from the FakeTV and 2' from the curtain - on the opposite of the window. To me the lamp light helps it look more realistic than just the flashing of the FakeTV in a dark room.

Spectacular

Price paid: $30.75. If you hide this device so potential burglars cannot see where the device is physically located, I think it's very effective. The automatic on / off function works perfectly for me as long as the room becomes pitch dark at sundown. The slightest light will not allow the device to activate according to a set schedule. I am not a burglar, but I have observed the lighting effects of this product from outside my home and I think this projector would put a significant doubt in even the most experienced thief's mind. The price needs to be lower.

Very realistic!
by Grace (5 out of 5 stars)

This works exactly like I hoped it would. The most important thing is that it looks very realistic and believable from the outside, randomly flashing, fading in and out, and changing colors in the way a real TV does. It's also bright and easy to see (but not so bright that it looks fake). Even though we placed it way across the room from the windows, on a shelf right under our actual TV, it's still very visible from the outside. And because of how small and plain-looking it is, it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb during the day. We leave it on "Dusk +7 hours." It detects "dusk" once we turn off all the lights in the room and go to bed, and stays on most of the night before turning itself off, making it look like someone is awake and active, long after we actually are.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the FakeTV. We plan to get another one for our house in Florida, since it's empty for parts of the year. Used along with the light timers we have there now, the house will look like it's always occupied.
