Luci vs. D.light.
by Chris,Top Contributor: Camping (5 out of 5 stars)
August 4, 2015

Great product in it's own right, but I still prefer the D-Light solar light for general usage.

In the picture, you can see both lights. The D.Light on the left and the Luci on the right. Both put out about the same exact amount of light (plenty bright enough to light up any indoor space).

The Luci might SEEM brighter because there is really nothing to stop the light from dispersing whereas there is, in essence, a "lampshade" on the other. That's negated by turning them both upside down as pictured.

I left both run from 8:30 PM onward.

The Luci was dead by 5:00 AM. The D-light was still going (but VERY dim). So it tells me that the battery is slightly better on the d.light (especially since that specific light was/is several years old).

I charged the Luci during the day and it lasted about the same amount of time the next night - so I don't think you'd have any problem getting a useful amount of run-time out of a normal day's charge.

The only con, in my opinion, is the lack of a powered charging option. This is definitely a deficiency when compared to the d.light. That compared with the fact that it doesn't last quite as long on a charge is what makes me say I prefer the d.light.

However, this guy really shines (pardon the pun) in a few areas. Portability being the most obvious. It can obviously be compacted much more, which makes it great for backpacks or in the car, if space is at a premium.

The fact that its water proof and buoyant are what prompted me to get it to keep in my boat.

Even though I prefer the d.light, it's by a very slim margin. This is a great product and I'm sure you'll be very pleased!

You want to buy this. You have to buy this. BUY THIS! Even my broken one is better than the competit

BUY THIS LANTERN. I've had my two for about 5 years now. I leave them in a south facing window and they are ALWAYS charged when I need them. When it's time to hit the trail I just toss them in my bag. When I'm at home it's great to inflate them and toss them in the pool. They weigh nothing, are totally waterproof, float, and are basically indestructible unless you plan to drive over the thing... and even then... it might be ok. BUY A LUCI LANTERN. Even after 5 years they are both still in perfect working order and as bright as they were the day I got them. Just recently (and all fault here goes to me) I over inflated one and then let it get smooshed. It popped. I used it a few times camping... and it still worked great... didn't really inflate...just hung there like a dead balloon... but still produced plenty of light. Today I had the idea to cut the inflatable chamber of the lantern. The solar panel, wiring, and LEDs are still perfectly contained in a waterproof plastic bubble... so now I have a badass floating fishbowl light!

Love this nifty gadget turns disappointing

Original review: (Five stars) Love this nifty gadget. Produces a a surprising of light. Packs flat and small which is convenient. Would be nice for backpacking. Illuminates the inside of a tent well. The light does not extend terribly far, but does what it is intended to do.

Updated review as of 8/16/15: (One start) Just brought this on my second camping trip. Two nights in a row it burned out within an hour of use after a whole day of charging. I am sad to change my five-star review to a one-star. Very disappointing since I really loved this product at first.

Update Dec 2018 I bought two more and they worked perfectly! Charged in sunshine for a day and they were ready to go. I recently bought another one. I highly recommend Luci Lights.

I bought two lights and both had issues with charging. The company supported me through the return process. Outstanding customer support!

Light of Day

I received this as a gift about 7 years ago. I knew it was a solar powered lantern but I never paid much attention to it and it just sort of moved with me over several states, shoved in boxes and cabinets, here and there. I just recently started getting into camping and found this in my drawer so I thought I would try it out. After sitting in the dark for SEVEN YEARS this thing was as bright as day. Took it camping, charged it a little in the setting sun and it lasted all night. Very bright with two different brightness settings and a flashing setting (I imagine for emergencies?). Love this little thing, will definitely start gifting to other adventurers/hikers/campers.

Good Solar Light but some Odd Design Issues
by D. Shetterly (5 out of 5 stars)
September 23, 2017

A friend recommended this to us especially since we live in a Hurricane area. I have to admit when I first got this, I was a little confused as to what to do. The instructions were not all that good, so I went online and found out more information. They are a good idea and seem to be bright. THere is also a little button to check battery status. The part where you blow into and inflate them doesn't recede so when you turn them upside down to recharge, they are kind of wobbly and at an angle. I'm not sure if that is by design or not but seemed odd.

After a company rep reached out to me, we got this resolved. The issue of the inflate valve not fitting fully into the unit was operator error and it now works. I appreciate the company rep reaching out to me and assisting to resolve the issue.

My favorite outdoor product in over a decade but only 4 stars? Read on!
by C. Alan (4 out of 5 stars)

My applications for this light: First, I am an expedition canoeist (actually, a river-rat floatfisherman who prefers to stay Out There for a week or more at a time). Haven't used mine for that yet (water's not warm enough yet), but I have one big trip already planned for this season and no doubt that the Luci will become my favorite camping lantern EVER. Second, I smoke, but not in the house or vehicle. I've been using this lantern every night since I got it as I go out to the BBQ area to smoke. I read constantly, even taking a book into the grocery store to read in the checkout line. This thing is great for reading at a picnic table with no moon in the tree-filled Arkansas Ozarks night.

Brightness is better than expected. With two suspended properly, you could easily play a nine-person game of Texas Hold 'em. Mine was fully charged when I got it, with no dimming after four hours of use before I finally decided to set it in the sun.

Charging on mine is excellent, and up here we don't plant anything that requires more than 6-8 hours of sun -- and we ain't had that much lately. I am positive that when stored atop a canoe pack, it will charge during a day's paddling sufficient for a full night's use.

Further to camping packs, the extremely light weight and ridiculously small deflated size are just insane. I used to backpack, and sure wish I woulda had one of these back in the day.

Now the drawbacks that keep me from a 5-star. Reading other reviews, apparently there's a real quality control problem with the panels. Not gonna 5-star outdoor gear that you have to take a chance on. But get one and test it before you need it anyway. It's well worth the hassle if you have to return a bad one to get a good one (and good ones definitely DO exist), and this is Amazon, so you won't lose your money.

But the above is for other people's problems. Mine WORKS, and I love it. Yet it has two glaring design flaws.

First is that it actually does work, as some have mentioned, much better UPSIDE-DOWN. Wouldn't be a big deal since it won't charge in the dark when you're using it anyway and so who cares where the panels are when it's on, but using it that way means the inflation valve is in the way when placed on a flat surface. Really, the valve should have been located off to the SIDE.

Second is that that the two (vinyl?) hanging straps are a joke. I've already busted one, and it hasn't been subjected to ANY abuse... heck, hardly any USE. I'll probably end up with a paracord/biner combo for actual camp hanging. But remember, no heat from this lantern. Rig any fastener you want.

Disregard people griping about wrinkled sides, seemingly el cheapo construction (except the straps), difficulty to inflate, etc. Mine has passed a six-foot drop test multiple times. Wrinkles? Accordians wrinkle too, but they are well-made (plus corrugations might actually aid in light diffusion). Plus if you hole a side, the same material resistance that causes those wrinkles will allow you to still have a lantern globe rather than a collapsed balloon. I think a lot of people are having trouble wrapping their brains around the fact that something that weighs as little as, and requires the same inflation as, a small dollar-store pool toy could actually function as serious outdoor/emergency gear.

It can and does.

Broken and not working right out of the box

I got it i

At the end of August and went to use it for the first time when the power went out at the end of October but it wouldn't light up brand new out of the box so I tried putting it in the direct sunlight to charge the following day but it didn't work and because I waited so long to test it I cannot return it. Really sucks, I wished I would have purchased through another vendor.

I really like it, but disappointed in performance.
by I Am No One (2 out of 5 stars)
July 2, 2018

I bought 2 of these based on reviews; unfortunately I fell into the bottom stars where the light would not fully recharge, no matter how many hours/days in full sun. Returned the first set after a week or so of trying to discharge all power and recharging; ended up returning because it was only 1 or 2 bars on either one out of 3 (1 bar seems to only last about an hour, give or take). Got another set, but it does the same thing.

I might order another set from somewhere else or wait a while and try from Amazon again. Hopefully it's just something wrong with this particular lot. Keeping the second set because it at least charges to the 2nd of 3 bars of power and my husband wants to use it for fishing just a couple of hours after dark.
Anyway, I really do like these, but the charging performance is irksome. This was for power outages and (after receiving them) for other general purpose lighting I thought of where I might save energy :( If you get 3 bars, it does last 12 hours. The plastic is reasonably heavy.

Great product, a must have!

These Luci lights are really wonderful. They quickly charge and last a long time. This is the second time I have purchased these lights and they have just gotten better. They light a large area and work well for camping or just as a reserve light around the house. The best part is no batteries to run out! They make great gifts for family a useful and practical gift.

I would definitely recommend this item.
