Got Arthritis or Sweaty or Dry Fingers? Looks Weird but Works Like a Dream
by J. Newton (5 out of 5 stars)
June 22, 2015

Hand arthritis has been making it very difficult to hold on to a pick for any length of time without pain; particularly with an acoustic guitar, as these require a harder pick strike.

A friend of mine at work was trying out a number of different solutions to slipping picks and loaned me one of these.

As soon as I got the grip right (in a few minutes) if felt amazingly natural in the hand and initial clumsiness disappeared.

Also, I was able to play without pain, since the picking force is distributed to other parts of the hand, so the first finger and thumb are free to just sit back and guide the pick.

The original comes with a 1mm pick. Being used to a thicker hard plastic pick, I also purchased a pack of the 1.4mm replacements.

As soon as I changed out to the thicker one, my old speed and accuracy were restored.

This product has truly been a lifesaver.

Great to be able to get back to playing again!

Added a picture of how I hold it. Found this gives me the most pick control and feels the most natural.

PYKMAX PICK SYSTEM A MAJOR HELP FOR HANDS
by whippersnapper (5 out of 5 stars)
May 19, 2017

This is the second Pymkax pick holder and pick I have purchased in a short time -- one is for backup and to keep in my second guitar case. I also added a couple of packs of replacement picks -- AND I have used standard picks MODIFIED with a DREMEL TOOL and installed in the Pykmax pick holder. Like most guitarists, I have favorite picks of various materials and shapes for different uses. Or perhaps just different moods.

This little gadget is held loosely in your hand -- seems as if it doesn't do much, but it DOES keep your hand in a more relaxed position. I have arthritis in my hands -- but my right hand was crushed in the early 1990s. It could not be properly set. The doctor injected my hand with pain killer. Then he put my hand in a position in which I could move fingers and thumb properly and taped it that way until it healed. Believe it or not, I have full use of my hand -- even with some arthritis problems.

HOWEVER, playing the guitar for any length of time apparently tenses the muscles in my hand enough to cause a couple of joints to freeze up and sort of pop before they behave normally. There is no sensible way to fix this problem considering the condition my hand is in. Playing the guitar WITH A RELAXED HAND is a great help.

I think honestly that playing with a relaxed hand in probably a good idea for anybody -- Pykmax has a good product with LOTS of ways to develop that product -- provide more varieties of picks -- produce a pykmax which might be adjustable for size or pykmaxes in more sizes -- manufacture a pykmax which would hold the pick of the user's choice -- lots of ways to approach increasing a customer following.

I think this is a great gadget. I see from customer reviews that a lot of people LIKE the Pykmax. I hope the company and the buying public won't be overly influenced by the sort of "professional snob" reviews -- Of course, there are loads of players who don't need such a thing -- Yes, if you're a pro, it might seem like a useless gadget -- Just wait til you get a little older and don't want to quit playing the guitar. Unfortunately the reviews in the professional publications often seem to belittle an item which could and should be a success commercially.

I wish the Pykmax people success. I hope they will maintain the quality fo their product and persist in their good work.

I, for one, am very satisfied with this product. I hope to see a lot more of it in the future.

THIS LITTLE INVENTION WORKS!! TRY IT!!!
by Kindle Customer (5 out of 5 stars)
May 6, 2015

I suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome and associated arthritis due, (probably) to years of work in the construction trades. This little tool for musicians with similar issues is really worth trying. (May not work for you, but then again..... it may.) No longer do I worry about dropping a pick during a performance, because Pykmax makes it virtually impossible to do that. Even if your hands sweat as mine do, the pick is securely fastened to the contoured grip. Hand cramps from trying to hold onto a pick that wants to constantly rotate as you play also becomes a non-issue due to the design. Thanks, PMD LTD. for an innovative product which is helping so many of us continue to play our stringed instrument(s) of choice!!

Great pick for arthritis thumb pain
by Scott B (4 out of 5 stars)
January 8, 2015

I decided to use this pick for one month before writing this review. Week 1: not so sure, Week 2: started liking it, Week 3 & 4: found it to be a great aid when my arthritis in my thumb was hurting. Without it, when my arthritis acts up I can't keep a strong enough grip on a regular pick and the pick will start to slip out of place and my lower thumb area throbs. This pykmax pick never moves out of place, is almost effortless to hold, and transmits the pressure to the area between index finger and thumb, thereby taking pressure off the thumb itself. The only thing that takes some getting used to is the new area of pressure. There have been many days I could not practice more than 30 minutes with a standard pick and with this pick I can practice 3 hours in a row. I gave a lot of thought to this before writing this review and I recommend it to anyone who has arthritis thumb pain. I play just as well with it as with a standard pick. In fact I just ordered the red 0.6mm picks to supplement the green 0.8 pick that came with it. I only wish that they sold a 0.7mm pick. If they did that I would give it 5 stars. To me 0.7mm would be the ideal thickness. But the green 0.8 pick does pretty good and still allows for a fairly bright tone when strumming. The picture of the product makes the green pick look long and narrow but in reality it's shaped just about like a normal pick. So don't let the picture dissuade you. I'm quite impressed so far. I don't understand why other reviewers did not like this pick. It's a game changer when you have arthritis in your thumb. I watched you tube video reviews of people using it and they seemed to like it too.

No more spinning pick
by Mike B (5 out of 5 stars)
March 31, 2017

When I hold the pick I hold it very loosely. While strumming the pick like to spin on me and I find myself focused on the pick. I never have that problem now. This fits comfortably in my hand and cannot spin and is always held in the correct position. My wife always played finger style and didn't use a pick and she liked it because it made her hold the pick correctly. I tried some of the other picks that were designed to keep the pick in the correct position but they were nowhere near as comfortable as this is. All in all I'm very glad I got this and will be buying a backup in case I lose this one.

Not for me but maybe for someone.
by Benny HaHa (3 out of 5 stars)

Meh. After giving it a fair amount of use before review I can't say it's an amazing improvement to the traditional pick. And in fact it can be

limiting when plucking pitch harmonics or ghost harmonics, it's difficult to get the same thumb relief on the string. I didn't really notice anything better when tremolo picking either, and strumming open chords was actually more difficult. I liken it to playing double bass your whole life bare foot and then putting on shoes. Yeah the shoes give you extra support and a different feel however you loose a certain organic connection you had bare foot. If you have thumb/hand problems and gripping the pick is difficult, then I suggest you buy a knobble right here at Amazon. Rub the heck out of the thick portion at the base of your thumb and work out that arthritis. It'll hurt and take a while but eventually you can heal your hand problems. I know I had them until I started some seriously intense hand stretching and super painful deep tissue massage. You can fix it.

Best Thing For Guitarist Since Eddie Van Halen...
by Shannon McDowell (5 out of 5 stars)
May 12, 2015

I had lost my right thumb in an industrial accident and the wonderful surgeons were able to reattach it, but the nerves never regenerated. My thumb is numb (poet and didn't know it) If you can imagine trying to hold a pick while playing a guitar...yeah, it doesn't work. I was focusing on the pick the whole time just to keep it from moving without me knowing. I would have to stop playing to reposition the pick. I tried the finger picks, they don't work. I have tried tethered picks with no success. The frustration grew to the point I was telling myself that the accident claimed my ability to play, and I was just about ready to move on when I saw this weird contraption. I read a few of the reviews and decided to give it a whirl. Thank God I did. I no longer consider my numb thumb a disability. In fact, I am now playing better than pre-accident. Hand fatigue is no longer an issue. With the Pykmax, the angle of the pick stays constant. Chords are stronger and more even because each string is being hit with equal force and attack. Going from picking to tapping to finger picking and back is so much smoother because the pick never leaves your hand. I got the green .088 thickness. I wish I would have gotten the next step up (1.2mm I think), but that is fixed by ordering it from Amazon. It is *AWESOME*

Will take a while to get used to it
by Too many manga (3 out of 5 stars)

I tend to hold my picks well away from my hand, to prevent brushing the strings with my fingers and to provide more of the heel of my hand for palm mutes. Since I normally play 6-string bass, there's a lot of stretch involved, so I try to gain every advantage I can. I also play guitar, and wanted to see if the Pykmax would allow me to shift gears and not overreach the strings. I tend not to watch my pick/plucking hand, counting on it to go where it's needed.

I found the Pykmax doesn't fit well into my hand, because of my preferred way of holding picks. As a matter of fact, my hand felt slightly cramped while holding the Pykmax, because I have to grip more tightly than I'm used to. I'll keep working on it anyway, to see if I get into the habit of playing each instrument in a completely different approach.

Finally decided this wasn't for me. Maybe it'll work out great for other folks, but the way I prefer to hold my pick and the Pykmax just don't mix well. Besides, the holder always feels too small for my hand, and sometimes cramps the muscles in my thumb. Not good at all!

Read this amazingly good review
by William Atha (5 out of 5 stars)

I always played with just my fingers because I played a more classical style on a nylon guitar. So even when I started on the electric I continued to use my fingers because I was always dropping a regular pick, putting it down to do some fingering and then loosing it, and felt limited by the regular pick. Until now! With this I never loose my pick, I can palm the pykmax to free up my fingers whenever I need, and it has taken my skills to a new level.

A lot of people don't like the pykmax and give a variety of excuses in the reviews, but the real reason most people complain is simply because it's not the traditional way of doing it. I'll address the main complaints briefly.
"Too small": I have huge hands, like seriously, and no problem with it's size.
"Picks wear out": Yes they do and this was my only complaint for a while until I realized the importance for them to wear out. You see, the pick wearing out tells you when to replace the pick to avoid the 'hinge' from wearing out and breaking mid performance or song.
"The pick thickness isn't right": there are like 6 different kinds of packs of picks. For goodness sake, get another one!
"Expensive": I have had the same Pykmax body for 5 years now and go through about a pack of refills a year. So not expensive in the long run.

Everyone might not like it, but this doesn't change the superb quality of this product.

You control the pick totally with a very comfortable hand position.
by C. Simmons (5 out of 5 stars)

I played a lot of guitar as a teenager...virtually all finger style. Then life got in the way and for a long time I played very little. Now, at 65 I've returned to guitar, trying to improve and increase my skills in all genres. Flat picking has been difficult. Arthritis has taken its toll and I find holding a conventional pick properly for any length of time difficult. Either the pick turns, or I'm dropping it. Enter Pykmax. You control the pick totally with a very comfortable hand position. Replacement picks for the grip are inexpensive and are available in different thicknesses. It's bee perfect for me.

My guess is that the children's size would be a big help for any young person taking on guitar; one less thing to worry about.
