LOUD!by exracers (3 out of 5 stars)

This was a Christmas gift to a 9-yr-old and 11-yr-old. They build lots of Lego creations so I thought they'd do well with this. HA! It takes serious time to put this together and by the time the boys realized they were stumped, about half of it had been built incorrectly. First & foremost, sort the parts by number---the boys didn't and hadn't realized the part numbers were stamped into the parts so it would have been fairly easy to do. We took it apart and started over---I don't think two kids could build this without adult help. The directions are not always clear and many adjustments needed to me made to get all the parts connected. Ex: when using a clip to connect the half pipes, the directions tell you which spaces to use but we found those connections needed to be tweaked (moved) in almost every instance. Once we got it together, we were knocked over by the LOUD and annoying sound effects. Otherwise, it's fairly fun---not a ton of interaction but we created challenges by dropping the marbles in at different time intervals, etc. The sound effects were overwhelming to us and detracted from the experience. I'd give it a 4.5 if the sound effects could be turned off!
Is this for kids or adult entertainment?

I bought and assembled this interesting toy for my grand nephews. Assembly took around three hours but the time flew by as it began to take shape. This assembly is not for very young children(I would draw the lower limit at 5 years) because there are marbles involved and the entire contraption, while well-thought out, is susceptible to careless and destructive behavior. Kids who appreciate the intricacies and varying routes the marbles take tend to be amazed and delighted, especially since there can be as many as nine marbles in various stages of moving down the assembly. It's not cheap but it is very different and will afford hundreds of hours of fun and entertainment for kids and adults(I played with it for a couple of hours before I turned the kids loose).
Fun to build, and fun to watch (for a little while).

Kinda fun to build and watch (for a little while). Some of the tracks are supported on one side only, tend to tip and the marble falls out. However you get a lot of action, and the parts fit together cleverly. This is not a very sophisticated marble run, but it is what it is. You have to be VERY careful to connect the correct parts (they are all numbered), but the instructions show what to do -- you just have to follow them. Its hard to imagine an 8-year-old putting this together. One (minor) design flaw: you cannot replace the batteries in the motor without taking most of the structure apart. One nice feature: the company's website has plans for an alternate structure which looks better than the original (I haven't built it yet); you have to print them out (not a problem) but it gives you ideas to go off on your own.

Keeps the kids entertained. Got this one for my nephew because he loves my daughters and his mother said he started putting it together but gave up. Not sure because it's finally summer or he just got bored. My daughter loves them as much as her legos.

Things don't line up as well as they should, but otherwise, I've had a good time building this with my 9 year old so far. It's definitely something to do with no babies or pets around an with a lot of time on your hands, or be prepared to only do a little at a time.

The Marble Vortex project more than met my students's expectations. Not only is it well made, sturdy, and colorful but the directions are clearly illustrated and easy to follow. This project was adapted to meet the integration of the S.T.E.M objectives in a fun, creative and collaborative way.
