Product Description

Quirky and GE comes the Wink Egg Minder Smart Egg Tray that adds a new level of intelligence to your everyday lives and the kitchen. The Egg Minder features a built-in Wi-Fi chip to allow it to sync up to your smart device via the Wink app. Once paired with your smartphone or tablet you can now open the app from anywhere to view how many eggs you have which can be incredibly handy on impromptu grocery shopping trips or if you simply just don't think to check on your egg count before heading out the door. This alone is very convenient but the Egg Minder can still do more. In the actual egg crate next to each egg is an LED light that will alert you to which egg of the bunch is the oldest and should be used next and when that egg is removed from the Egg Minder the next oldest will be indicated and so on. The Egg Minder will also communicate with you through various push-notifications to alert you to when an egg has gone bad, an egg is close to going bad, and even set the Egg Minder to notify you when you are running low on eggs. The Wink app will allow you to choose at what amount of eggs left you want to be notified since a family of five is more likely to run out of eggs quicker than someone living on their own. Up to 14 eggs can be stored in the Egg Minder at one time and to keep the eggs safe while in your refrigerator it also comes with a protective covering. It is powered by two AA batteries (included) and is compatible iOS 6 and above, iPhone 4 and above, and Android OS 2.2 and higher

Features

  • It syncs with your smartphone to tell you how many eggs you've got at home (up to 14) and when they're going bad.
  • irelessly connects to your mobile device to track the number of eggs you have and tell you when they're going bad
  • In-tray LED lights indicate the oldest egg, while push notifications alert you when you're running low.
  • heck Egg Minder while at the store; you'll never be in a scramble for a good egg again.

Great theory; disappointing in practical application
by Amanda B (1 out of 5 stars)

Loved the concept for this item -- what's not to love about an egg minder that sends alerts when eggs are low (or when the battery is!) and tells you when your eggs have that 'not-so-fresh' feeling. I thought I would like the extra two egg slots, but between that and the high profile of the cover, it takes up WAY too much room. I can now only store 14 eggs where I used to be able to store 24. When I refilled the item with new eggs, they were detected. But now, they aren't even acknowledged in the app. The low battery alert didn't fire, but I replaced the batteries anyway. Still no dice, er, egg. Now I have two eggs that are marked as not good, with another 8 that are an unknown. Uninstalling and reinstalling the app didn't help. It doesn't sense egg freshness, to be clear, just calculates a number of weeks (that you choose) from the date they were loaded into the slots, so though I could just wipe everything out and start over, who knows how long I should give the unknowns, because it's going to start calculating from today! Wish I could return it, but I initially thought it would grow on me. I hate to just throw it out, too, but not only is it not keeping me informed, it's taking up excess space in my fridge. (Which, BTW, is a restaurant quality behemoth, so there's a lot of space, and yet...this thing takes up a bunch! I have it diagonally on the shelf, because it would hang over the edge, or get pushed clear to the back where I can't reach it. Also, the eggs are quite loose in their spots -- the original carton the eggs came in is more comforting, because they're not just waggling about every time I move the thing. Makes me nervous that one will break when I pull the thing out, or if a kid pushes a juice box in next to it too firmly, as kids are wont to do. I really wanted to love this thing (most of our home is "smart" -- doors, cams, lights, etc.) and add to our collection of quirky devices, but I will probably just trash the thing and try to forget what I spent on it. *sigh*

Glad I bought it.

It is a quirky product in that it is very unusual and does not always connect as it should. It is a great egg container on its own and worth the money if for nothing but that. But it is also neat to have another smart device in my home -- it helps me get more attune to the technology this precedes.Changed to 5 stars because for the past 6 months it has operated flawlessly. The only thing I did differently was put in Duracell batteries instead of a generic batteries and they have lasted and every time it saw light upon opening the refrigerator you could see it light up and grab an ip off the network. Still think this is demonstrative of the huge future of the IoT.

I read a fair amount of bad reviews on this one
by Corey D. Ribner (5 out of 5 stars)

I read a fair amount of bad reviews on this one, but for the price (less than $10), I decided if anything else, it was a pretty cool looking egg tray.

Surprise, it works perfectly. YES, it may take a bit of time to 'sync' with your hub to show the updated results after the refrigerator door is open (sometimes). YES, if eggs are put in awkwardly they may not read properly, and YES, you want to keep the lens on the bottom of each slot clean for it to work reliably (after taking an egg out).

But YES, it works, and has never failed. Obviously this is a novelty designed to showcase how cool IoT devices are, therefore it should be taken with a grain of salt. Still, haven't found a flaw in over three months, and it's built beautifully. As a result, I'd recommend it.

Doesn't work.

This device is supposed to keep track of how many eggs you have, so you can pull out your phone and see while you're at the store. It doesn't do that correctly. I currently have 5 eggs in my fridge, and the device thinks I have zero.

It is also supposed to light up a small LED next to the oldest egg when you have it open so that you can grab the oldest egg. It doesn't do that correctly since it thinks I have zero eggs.

I'm giving it two stars because 20% of the time it does work, and there isn't a better option that I am aware of.

It's just too bad this was a good idea

Unfortunately it suffers from poor execution. When I first got the device trying to figure out how to set it up was completely confusing but eventually I got it connected to my Wink home automation system. Actually operation of the device was well hit & miss. It did display the eggs and there dates but the amount of eggs was often wrong. I made the mistake of removing it from my home automation system in the hopes of reinstalling it and now I can't get it to work at all. The company that made it went belly up so forget about getting any help from them. I'll still fiddle with it and it does hold the eggs even if it doesn't report how many there are. Also I a gift card to buy it so didn't lose any money on it.

Smart add-on in the kitchen; You will love once you know the weaknesses, just like a human
by HELIO (4 out of 5 stars)

Smart add-on in the kitchen. If you want a stress free setup you first create a guest network with an easy password. Differently from the other reviewers I think this device works fine, although not perfectly. It works fine I can say that when the tray is about empty, it is quite correct in the app., when the tray is about full, it is also quite correct in the app. It is not perfect as some time you may find in the app an egg in a place that is different from the one in the real tray. Overall the number is correct most of the time. I love this product. I would suggest it to anyone that has a Wink hub

UPDATE Feb 2017: I just wanted to confirm that YES, the product works as it should. Without basing purchase of eggs on the app, I have verified the discrepancy between the app count and physical count and for over 20 or more checks it has been pretty right. There is only one downfall I have discovered. BATTERIES die soon. Once the battery is low the count can start to be incorrect. I haven't figured out the battery change frequency, but besides that, it rocks !

Runnnn Forest Run !!!!

I bought this eggminder because my husband thought it would be awesome to know when his eggs were going bad, I told him not to get his hopes up as it stays in a fridge and runs on radio signals ! But I couldn't even prove that to him as it wouldn't connect no matter how hard I tried and I have great wifi and new equipment. And don't hold your breath trying to get a refund back it's a no, not going to happen this is most definitely a hands down suck product I would have given it 3 for at least an effort for trying but even though its only 10.00 it pissed me off lol

Revision 1.0 product - considerable improvement opportunity
by Per (2 out of 5 stars)
October 11, 2015

I bought the Egg Minder becaue it was for sale on Amazon Prime for only $9. The laughters I get at work was worth the $9 alone. It came in a gorgeous (think Apple) packaging that probably cost the company a lot. The product is actually very good looking and feels sturdy and "high end". So why only 2 stars? The SW has a long way to go on this product. As other reviewers have pointed out, you can't trust the information it sends to your smartphone. I have added a photo that shows what I saw and what the App saw - obviously I trust my own eyes a bit more...

I have not had any problems with batteries dying after several weeks, but like I said, it's a bit random when it comes to accuracy.

I still found it worth $9 just for the fun of it, but I would have been upset spending the original price.

Not worth it, should have listened to other reviews
by Rose (1 out of 5 stars)

So my fiance wants to make our apartment a smart apartment, so I went online and looked up top tech things to give people and this was second on the list, I thought it would def make for an interesting present and to show that I "tried" since I don't have much interest in that stuff. First of all when he tried to calibrate it to his phone with the program it took half an hour and didn't even work, finally he managed to get it after walking away and coming back to it. When opening up the fridge, it automatically moves the eggs around in you're phone, even when you don't touch any of them and also loses Wi-Fi connection since its in the fridge.

We liked the idea of this and just wish it would have worked, also I can't return it which Im not a fan of. The other reviews also say that this worked for about a month and then stopped or it just didn't work at all, I went against my gut and just got it, but def not worth it.

Great way to reduce stress
by W. Giant (5 out of 5 stars)

Ever been out on a brisk walk trying to work out the stress from the day and then suddenly been hit with a wave of anxiety wondering just how many eggs are in the fridge and what condition they might possibly be in? Well, with the egg minder those panic attacks are for ever behind us. This product works anywhere too, so we can check on our eggs from the John, or the back of a police car, or even from in the emergency room, because those warning signs to turn off all cell phones are just stupid.

The Eggminder will set all of our hearts and minds at ease. Our dreams of a more peaceful world are at hand.

Thank you Eggminder. Thank you.
